  • the Burglar Alarm that just keeps ringing a response to zaller
    Political Communication, 2003
    Co-Authors: Lance W Bennett
    Abstract:

It is hard to disagree with John Zaller’s rhetorical formulation of two news standards: the useful “Burglar Alarm” that alerts busy citizens to important events in their public lives, versus the needlessly demanding Full News standard that issues detailed reports on matters of little consequence. Surely none could argue with the sensible Burglar Alarm or advocate the stultifying absurdity of the Full News standard when they are contrasted like this: “the news should provide information in the manner of attention-getting ‘Burglar Alarms’ about acute problems, rather than ‘police patrols’ over vast areas that pose no immediate problems.” The trouble with this new standard for news is that, when specified more fully, it turns out to be a nearly perfect account of what the news is already doing. Yet, Zaller implies that the news is currently turning off citizens because it still clings to the progressive-era notion of the full standard—patrolling vast areas that pose no immediate problems. In fact, the trouble with news is precisely the opposite. What has happened to the news in the past twenty years is that it has shifted in the direction of soft news and sensationalism, resulting in the continual sounding of Burglar Alarms on any number of issues—often just because they are shocking—and turning citizens off in the bargain. In short, the argument that Zaller offers to endorse his standard is almost perfectly backwards. The news, in fact, is sounding Burglar Alarms all the time. This incessant ringing of Alarms about dubious problems, unseemly scandals, and daily threats to health and safety discourages citizens from taking the press, politicians, and public life seriously. For example, Patterson shows that people who have left the news arena in recent years do so not because news is covering too much barren ground, but because it is too negative, sensational, and Alarming (Patterson, 2000). Beyond this fundamental flaw in the reasoning behind the Burglar Alarm standard, there are several core problems with the argument that take it away from its opening and fairly agreeable—but rhetorically loaded—formulation and into far less compelling terrain. The first problem develops from my opening point: Nearly all of Zaller’s examples of ideal, Burglar Alarm news involve news practices that already exist. The trouble is that a large volume of this Alarming news is regarded by citizens, scholars, and journalists as

  • Implementation of ZigBee-GSM based home security monitoring and remote control system
Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2011
Co-Authors: Arbab Waheed Ahmad, Naeem Jan, Saeed Iqbal, Chankil Lee
    Abstract:

Home security and control is one of the basic needs of mankind from early days. But today it has to be updated with the rapidly changing technology to ensure vast coverage, remote control, reliability, and real time operation. Deploying wireless technologies for security and control in home automation systems offers attractive benefits along with user friendly interface. In this paper, implementation of a novel security and control system for home automation is presented. The proposed system consists of a control console interfaced with different sensors using ZigBee. Suspected activities are conveyed to remote user through SMS (Short Message Service) or Call using GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) technology. Upon reply, the remote user can control his premises again through GSM-ZigBee combination. Besides, traditional Burglar Alarm enhances security in case of no acknowledgment from remote user. This system offers a low cost, low power consumption and user friendly way of a reliable portable monitoring and control of the secured environment. Using the concept of serial communication and mobile phone AT-commands (Attention Telephone/Terminal commands), the software is programmed using C-language. The design has been implemented in the hardware using ZigBee EM357 module, Atmega128 MCU (microcontroller unit) and Sony Ericsson T290i mobile phone set.

  • design of home Burglar Alarm system based on gsm short message
Hebei Journal of Industrial Science and Technology, 2013
    Co-Authors: Liu Ting
    Abstract:

Through analysis of anti-theft Alarm system,a design of home Burglar Alarm system using GSM network to transmit Alarm is presented. The hardware and software design and working principle of short message Alarm system are given in the paper. The process of AVR single chip computer communicating with GSM module is emphasized as well as the programming of PDU coding and the AT commands used in the process.Experiments result shows that the system is stable and can realize the Alarm transmission in real time and guarantee the safety of unattended environment.

  • internet based home automation server and control method thereof
    2002
Co-Authors: Youngjo Cho, Guhnsong Lee, Jaiwook Bang, Yuchul Kim, Hyosup Kim
    Abstract:

The present invention relates to a remote-controlled home automation system, and more particularly to a home automation system capable of controlling household electric appliances and facilities by using a computer connected to the Internet and cellular phone, and generating a fire Alarm or a Burglar Alarm as of abnormality. The home automation server in accordance with the present invention, supports a function of remote-controlling household electric appliances and facilities as well as a function of network gateway which helps household computers to access the Internet while preventing illegal access from outside.
