  • Effects of stabilized stannous fluoride dentifrice on Dental Calculus, Dental plaque, gingivitis, halitosis and stain : A systematic review

    Abstract:

    Objectives: The aim of the present systematic review was to examine the scientific evidence for the efficacy of stabilized stannous fluoride (SnF2) dentifrice in relation to Dental Calculus, Dental plaque, gingivitis, halitosis and staining. Data and sources: Medline OVID, Embase.com, and the Cochrane Library were searched from database inception until June 2017. Six researchers independently selected studies, extracted data, and assessed methodological quality. A meta-analysis of the 6-month gingivitis studies was done. Risk of bias was estimated using a checklist from the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment (SBU, 2018). Study selection: Two studies on Dental Calculus, 21 on Dental plaque and gingivitis, 4 on halitosis, and 5 on stain met the inclusion criteria. Risk of bias was high for the studies on Dental Calculus, halitosis, and stain, and varied for the Dental plaque and gingivitis studies. Significant reductions in Dental Calculus and in halitosis were reported for the SnF2 dentifrice; no differences in stain reduction were noted. A meta-analysis on gingivitis found better results for the SnF2 dentifrice compared to other dentifrices, though the results of the individual trials in the meta-analyses showed a substantial heterogeneity. Conclusions: The present review found that stabilized SnF2 toothpaste had a positive effect on the reduction of Dental Calculus build-up, Dental plaque, gingivitis, stain and halitosis. A tendency towards a more pronounced effect than using toothpastes not containing SnF2 was found. However, a new generation of well conducted randomized trials are needed to further support these findings. Clinical relevance: Adding a SnF2 toothpaste to the daily oral care routine is an easy strategy that may have multiple oral health benefits

    Abstract:

    INTRODUCTION To assess the association of oral hygiene, Dental caries, and periodontal status with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective case-control study on 81 patients treated for neoplasms with bone metastases. Twenty-nine patients with bone necrosis and 52 controls treated with bisphosphonates were compared using the Oral Hygiene Index, Decay, Missing, Filled Teeth, Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs, and Residual Periodontal Bone. The null hypothesis stated that there was no difference in parameters of oral health between patients with and without bone necrosis. Differences of means of above-mentioned variables were compared between the groups with Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney rank sum test and χ(2) test. Value of p ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Poorer oral hygiene (OHIs 1.94 vs. 1.32; p = 0.065), more advanced Dental caries (DMFT 26.85 vs. 22.87; p = 0.05), and more advanced periodontal disease (CPITN: = 0: 21.05% vs. 42.51%; = 1 13.16% vs. 7.29%; = 2: 0% vs. 15.38%; = 3: 65.79% vs. 28.34%; = 4: 0% vs. 6.48%, Residual periodontal bone 73.1% vs. 80.51%; p = 0,001) were characteristic of patients with bisphosphonate related jaw necrosis when compared with control group. An advanced Dental caries or periodontal disease required surgical intervention which directly contributed to the development of the bone necrosis. CONCLUSIONS Dental and periodontal disease can lead to bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. Oncologic patients treated with bisphosphonates should be offered preventive care to reduce Dental plaque, Calculus, Dental caries, and periodontal disease.

    DESCRIPTION OF ORAL HYGIENE LEVEL AND Dental CARIES OF GRADE IV AND V STUDENTS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2 TAJENTABANAN REGENCY IN 2018 ABSTRACT Oral hygiene is a condition that shows in the oral cavity a person is free of impurities, such as plaque and Calculus. Dental caries is a Dental tissue disease characterized by tissue damage starting from the tooth surface (pit, fissure, and interproximal area) extends towards the pulp. The purpose of this research is to know description of oral hygiene level and Dental caries of grade IV and V students of elementary school 2 Tajen Tabanan regency in 2018. The research is descriptive research. The results of the research on 31 about oral hygiene students were obtained the highest number were the moderate criteria (67,7%), the average of OHI-S 1,62 including the medium criteria, the students affected by Dental caries were 25 students with 62 caries teeth, average Dental caries by 2, and average Dental caries based on the highest level of Dental and oral hygiene with moderate criteria 2,28. The conclusions of this study are the average Dental and oral hygiene criteria being the most have moderate OHI-S criteria. The average Dental caries is two teeth.
