    Abstract:

    Abstract We investigate the degree of territory faithfulness of the Canary Islands stonechat Saxicola dacotiae, an endemic bird species of the semi-arid island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain), and the spatial and temporal variability of habitat traits related to its breeding success over its whole distribution range. Between 1998 and 2003 we monitored the spatial location of individually marked birds to determine whether they were site faithful. We also analysed the spatial and temporal variability of the abiotic (rainfall) and biotic (food availability, abundance of avian predators and competitors, and nest predation) factors that may influence breeding success in this species. Canary Islands stonechats were strongly site faithful. Out of 106 individuals, 86 (81.0%) were re-sighted during the whole study period, and most re-sightings (76; 88.4%) were in the territory where they were initially caught. Dispersal events were rare both within (1%) and between (≤6%) consecutive years, and detectability of colour-ringed birds was as high as 87%. No significant spatial variation of abiotic and biotic factors affecting success was found at a range of spatial scales. Low spatial variance in the habitat characteristics determining reproductive success could have favoured site fidelity in this species, as costs associated with changing site would not be compensated for by significant increases in survival or breeding prospects in new territories. Strict protection of the areas already occupied by this “Endangered” narrow range endemic bird would be the most effective way of preserving it, due to its strict habitat and microhabitat requirements and its strong site fidelity.

    Abstract:

    Habitat selection by the Canary Islands stonechat (Saxicola dacotiae), an endemic bird of Fuerteventura Island (Canary Islands, Spain), was studied in a two-tier habitat approach of microhabitat and landscape. Birds spent all their foraging time on stony fields and barrancos, avoiding lava and sandy fields. Slopes with high shrub coverage were the best predictors of occurrence of Canary Islands stonechats at a landscape scale. At a microhabitat scale, slopes with large boulders were selected, whilst those covered with small stones were clearly avoided. Birds used those places that supported the largest invertebrate densities. Two main threats to the species are: (1) grazing pressure (which could increase the process of desertification and decrease the availability of food), and (2) the destruction or alteration of optimal habitats, mainly owing to an increase in tourism development. Future management efforts should include the protection of large patches of stony field and barranco habitats, with slopes having at least 50% of shrub cover and large boulders. In addition, rigorous studies are needed to ascertain the maximum level of goat grazing for maintaining these optimal habitats for the Canary Island stonechat.

    The aim of this study was to analyze the aluminum content in foods and beverages most commonly consumed by the Canary Island population to determine the dietary intake of this metal throughout the Canary Islands as a whole and in each of the seven Islands (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro). Four hundred and forty samples were analyzed by ICP-OES. Estimated total intake of aluminum for the Canary population was 10.171 mg/day, slightly higher than the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI; 10 mg/day for a person weighing 70 kg). Aluminum intake by age and sex of the Canary Island population was also determined and compared values from other populations, both national and international.

In the nonsmoking general population, diet is the major source of cadmium exposure; therefore, it is important to monitor the dietary intake of this heavy metal to quantify and improve the understanding of Cd accumulation in the human body. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of Cd in a range of food and drink commonly consumed in the Canary Islands. Food samples (420) were analyzed for Cd by atomic absorption spectrometry. The most recent nutritional survey conducted for the Canarian population was used to define the food and drink groups analyzed. The measured Cd concentrations combined with the food consumption data resulted in a total Cd intake in the Canary Islands of 0.16 μg/kg of body weight/day, which is well below the respective provisional tolerable weekly intake of Cd of 1 μg/kg of body weight per day determined by the FAO/WHO. The results are also compared with values reported for other national and international communities.

    The aim of this work was to perform an analysis based on mtDNA sequences of the 16S rRNA gene in order to determine the phylogenetic position of ticks belonging to the Rhipicephalus sanguineus group from the Canary Islands, Cyprus, and Croatia. All the haplotypes obtained from ticks collected in the Canary Islands and Croatia grouped with R. sanguineus sensu stricto from France, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and the USA. The sequences of R. sanguineus sensu lato from Cyprus formed a clade with R. sanguineus s.l. from Egypt, Turkey, and Romania, which belongs to the ?Rhipicephalus sp. morphotype I? or ?southeastern European lineage.? Ticks determined as R. turanicus s.l. from Cyprus clustered separately from the remaining clades of the R. sanguineus group, including R. turanicus s.s.
