SPICE - A Modeling View of Process Improvement
Communications in Computer and Information Science, 2011Co-Authors: Clenio F. SalvianoAbstract:As a consequence of Software Process Improvement success there are forces that urge for further evolution. One force is the need for eliciting and refining underlying SPI principles. This article introduces a modeling view of process and process improvement with three types of process models (Process Capability Profile, Process Enactment Description and Process Performance Indicator) and an example on a process improvement cycle. This modeling view improves the integrated understanding of what we want, what is the current status, what we can do and what we are doing for improvement during a cycle. This modeling view is then used as a basis for introducing Modeling driven (Knowledge Working) Process Improvement as an evolution of current Model-based (Software, Systems and Services) Process Improvement.

Practices and Techniques for Engineering Process Capability Models
CLEI Electronic Journal, 2010Co-Authors: Clenio F. Salviano, Márcia Regina Martins Martinez, Alessandra Zoucas, Marcello ThiryAbstract:Software Process Improvement, based on a Maturity Level or a Process Capability Profile, from a Capability Maturity Model or an ISO/IEC 15504-based model, is well established in the software industry as a successful practical means for improving software intensive organizations. In consequence there is an opportunity to understand how these models have been developed and consolidate this knowledge to support the development of new models by a broader community including the industry. This article introduces practices and techniques of a Method Framework for Engineering Process Capability Models as an element of a methodology on a Process Capability Profile to drive Process Improvement. This method framework is based on previous experiences to develop different process Capability models. Its current version is composed of sequential practices, customization rules, guidelines for using the framework, a repository for examples of utilization and another repository for examples of techniques. This method framework is part of a methodology. An initial validation indicates a first confidence that this method framework is a useful proposal for developing methods and processes for engineering process Capability models.

THE SHIFT TO KNOWLEDGE WORKING INTENSIVE ORGANIZATIONS ANDITS IMPACT IN THE EVOLUTION OF SOFTWARE PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
2008Co-Authors: Clenio F. SalvianoAbstract:This article presents a definition, rationality and an exemplar methodology for a proposed evolution of the current Software (and System) Process Improvement (SPI) area. This proposed evolution is a {(Process Capability Profile) Model-Driven (Process Engineering) for (Software, System and other Knowledge Work) Intensive Organization} (MDPEK). This proposal is important because the forces around the successful current successful SPI demand a revision of the current area towards a more generic area. The shift to knowledge working intense organizations, as identified by Peter Drucker, and the generalization of software and software processes to knowledge and knowledge working processes are one of these forces.

Configuration of a Production Control System through Cooperation of Software Units Using their Capability Profiles in the Cloud Environment
Procedia CIRP, 2014Co-Authors: Michiko Matsuda, Kiminobu Kodama, Satoshi Noguchi, Sakuyuki Onishi, Toshikatsu Asano, Takuya Horikita, Kousuke KomatsubaraAbstract:Abstract Recent manufacturing systems including application software for production control are required to have high flexibility and fast changeability. In response to this, this paper proposes the development and operation methodology for production control applications which are configured by cooperation of manufacturing software units provided by different vendors using Capability profiling technology. In this methodology, a Profile matcher uses the manufacturing software Capability Profile repository to find and select adequate software units by Capability Profile matching with the required Capability Profile. The manufacturing software Capability Profile repository can be organized using a standardized method given by ISO 16100 to describe capabilities of manufacturing software units in terms of the Capability Profile. Based on information from the matcher's output, the production control application has been configured by combining selected software units. The application configurator organizes the production control application by plug-and-play of software units which match the Capability Profile with the requirement. A Profile matcher has been implemented. The experimentation that configured an application in a cloud environment that communicates with the equipment on the floor has been successfully done on a commercially available cloud service. This trial shows the potential for the proposed methodology as a solution for a quick and flexible configuration of a production control system.

I-ESA - Manufacturing Application Interoperability using Software Capability Catalogue
Enterprise Interoperability V, 2012Co-Authors: Qian Wang, Michiko MatsudaAbstract:A standardized methodology for manufacturing software interoperability through Capability profiling is provided by the ISO 16100 series. These international standards are also applicable and usable for developing general software applications including enterprise applications. In order for users to implement the methodology presented in ISO 16100 and to get the user needed software, the definite semantics of the Capability Profile is very important in the software Capability profiling. This paper proposes the way to provide a concrete method to meet the semantics requirements in the profiling and provide some tools to ensure that the data in the software Capability Profile is of clear meaning. The proposed way becomes a reality by applying the concept of an Identification Schema in eOTD of ISO 22745.

Software Interoperability Tools: Standardized Capability-Profiling Methodology ISO16100
2010Co-Authors: Michiko Matsuda, Qian WangAbstract:The ISO 16100 series has been developed for Manufacturing software interoperability through Capability profiling. Theses international standards are also applicable and usable for developing general software applications including enterprise applications. In this paper, ISO 16100 methodology and its usage in the trial implemented environment are introduced and discussed as software interoperability tools. The Capability Profile is created by filling an adequate template. The templates are prepared corresponding to activity classes which construct the application. In the development stage of new application software, the adequate software units for reuse can be found to match the requirement described in the required Capability Profile. The matching algorithm for Capability Profiles using an application domain dictionary is also provided when the Profiles come from different activity class trees.

Toward Service Orchestration Through Software Capability Profile
Proceedings of the I-ESA Conferences, 2019Co-Authors: Abdelhadi Belfadel, Jannik Laval, Chantal Bonner Cherifi, Nejib MoallaAbstract:Open-source applications are a gold mine of potential functions for reuse. However, the difficulty lies in the identification and characterization of these functionalities to meet specific business needs. In this work, we aim to decompose and externalize functionalities from open-source business applications for service orchestration. We propose a solution for characterizing a functionality in a standardized and readable way. Then we propose an automated process based on ISO 16100 Capability Profile, to externalize the characterized functionalities as RESTful APIs. As a result, we expose reusable components to be used for service orchestration in response to a specific business need.

Ontology-based Software Capability Container for RESTful APIs
2018Co-Authors: Abdelhadi Belfadel, Jannik Laval, Chantal Bonner Cherifi, Emna Amdouni, Nejib MoallaAbstract:Software reuse and REST-based Web Applications resulted from open initiatives become an interesting opportunity for companies to save effort, time and cost during the design and development of new business needs. Gather and qualify these services in a container helps to discover, match and reuse them in developing new business applications for companies. Our objective in this work is the design of a software Capability container offering a wider view qualification for REST-based services. Moreover, we aim to enrich the designed container with semantic elements to ease the discovery and the selection of the qualified services. In this purpose, we define an ontology based on a proposed Enterprise Architecture Capability Profile offering a qualification covering business, operational and technical aspects for services. Ontologies are widely acknowledged as a means to specify explicitly the meaning of concepts in a domain of interest, and to facilitate consistent sharing of data and knowledge pertaining to them. The qualification Profile is based on a proposed meta-model that helps to retrieve and gather initial requirements used to guide the development of existing REST-based Web Applications. Furthermore, a Framework is proposed to exploit the designed container in order to respond to users requirements for developing future business process and efficiently reuse the qualified services. Our contribution aims to upgrade technical components to the level of end-users requirements. This helps to accelerate business application development and improve the reuse and sustainability of existing services.

2018Co-Authors: Abdelhadi Belfadel, Jannik Laval, Chantal Bonner Cherifi, Nejib MoallaAbstract:Open source solutions offer great reuse opportunities. However , the difficulty lies on the appropriation of these solutions to meet specific business requirements. We aim in this work to decompose an open source application in specific functionalities as a conceptual view for service orchestration. We provide a solution to characterize a func-tionality of an open source application in a readable and standardized way. Then we provide an automated solution for the externalization of these characterized functionalities as an Application Programing Interface. Our approach uses Capability Profile provided by ISO 16100 series which is a standardized methodology for interoperability of manufacturing software. As a result, we generate reusable components for service orchestration needs.

Capability Profile for enterprise application integration
2017 International Conference on Engineering Technology and Innovation (ICE ITMC), 2017Co-Authors: Abdelhadi Belfadel, Jannik Laval, Chantal Bonner Cherifi, Nejib MoallaAbstract:Open source applications are becoming more and more important and many companies use these applications in their own work to realize projects faster, better and cheaper. But in some cases, the entire use of an open source application is not necessary, with the need to use only one functionality of an open source application to link or integrate it with another application. This paper presents a positioning for a framework to use open source application decomposition in specific functionalities (features) as conceptual view for enterprise applications integration. The decomposed feature will be exposed as an Application Programming Interface (API) to support enterprise integration. Our solving approach uses a standardized methodology for manufacturing software interoperability through Capability profiling provided by the ISO 16100 series, and which is also applicable and usable for developing general software applications including enterprise applications.

Towards the democratisation of design: a generalised Capability model for FDM
International Journal of Agile Systems and Management, 2020Co-Authors: Mark Goudswaard, Ben Hicks, Aydin NassehiAbstract:The manufacture of parts via fused deposition modelling (FDM) is inhibited by a lack of understanding of the manufacturing process, resulting in parts having unreliable mechanical properties. Correspondingly, this paper considers the incorporation of Capability Profiles (CPs) for FDM as a solution. The evolved requirements of CPs for FDM are considered and the necessary process information that would be incorporated within them is presented. A review of existing literature of the effect of process parameters on mechanical properties of FDM parts identifies process variability and the effects of shape and scale as areas insufficiently studied. To address this, tensile tests are conducted revealing: 1) variation (26%) in identical test specimens' UTS; 2) that properties do not scale linearly with specimen size; 3) that cross-sectional shape directly impacts mechanical performance. These results are used to define the parameters required for a Capability Profile for FDM and subsequently demonstrate its functionality.

Towards the democratisation of design: the implementation of metaheuristic search strategies to enable the auto-assignment of manufacturing parameters for FDM
Procedia Manufacturing, 2019Co-Authors: Mark Goudswaard, Aydin Nassehi, Ben HicksAbstract:Abstract Emerging manufacturing technologies such as Filament Deposition Modelling (FDM) printing have the ability to democratise manufacturing by enabling the low-cost production of goods in homes and communities. In addition to changing the way we manufacture, FDM and other Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies are also able to revolutionise the way in which we design, as they permit the creation of structures not permissible by traditional subtractive processes. This flexibility also however creates a large and complex solution space yielding the generation of optimal designs incredibly difficult. A design methodology is proposed that accounts for the large and complex solution space afforded by the FDM process. It combines an empirically-derived Capability Profile of the FDM manufacturing process and a fusion of activities from both virtual and physical design processes. Capability Profiles coupled with classical analysis techniques are used to predict part behaviours’ and, when coupled with appropriate solution space navigation, enable the auto-generation of manufacturing parameters & geometries that can satisfy the functional requirements of an object. This paper presents the Universal Hook Generator - an instantiation of this design methodology applied to the design of a generic load bearing component. It is used as a platform to explore the suitability of three metaheuristic search techniques; Evolutionary Algorithms, Simulated Annealing and Particle Swarm Optimisation. Each is assessed with respect their ability to auto-generate manufacturing and geometric parameters of a load bearing hook. Particle Swarm Optimisation is found to outperform both Evolutionary Algorithms and Simulated Annealing with respect to both quality and consistency of generated solutions.

Determination of machinability considering degradation of accuracy over machine tool life cycle
Procedia CIRP, 2014Co-Authors: B. Afsharizand, S. T. Newman, Xiang Zhang, Aydin NassehiAbstract:The emergence of financially and environmentally conscious manufacturing has resulted in a need for efficient process planning in today's manufacturing system. Process planning based on nominal machine tool specifications, limits predictive capabilities with regard to the final part quality. More efficient process plans can be achieved once an accurate machine tool Capability Profile has been defined. Machine tool Capability Profiles deliver up-to-date resource attributes such as availability, health and applicability into the process-planning stage. A manufacturing resource's health degrades continuously throughout its life cycle due to environmental factors, part wear, operator competence, etc. Identifying and compensating for these factors during process planning may alleviate material wastage and machining estimate production time and cost via decision-making mechanisms. In this paper, the STEP-NC Standard is used to represent a model of machining resources, including worktable, spindle and tool status during a machine tool's operational lifespan. A prototype of machine tool Capability Profile enabled process planning system is then presented and tested to highlight the advantages of this approach.

machine tool Capability Profile for intelligent process planning
Cirp Annals-manufacturing Technology, 2009Co-Authors: Stephen T Newman, Aydin NassehiAbstract:An optimized metal cutting process plan can only be developed with an accurate Capability Profile of a machine tool. Based on the information within this Profile, a manufacturing decision making process can ascertain the time and production cost of parts. In this paper, a standardized methodology for modelling manufacturing resources is realized to enable accurate representation of actual resources and custom constraints. An example case study demonstrates the application of the machine tool Capability Profile through the selection of available cutting tools rather than using nominal cutting tools.
