Diversity and Abundance of Carabidae and Staphylinidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) in Four Montane Habitat Types on Mt. Bawakaraeng, South Sulawesi

Their roles especially as generalist predators are important in forest ecosystem. No studies reported their diversity and abundance in forest ecosystem on Mt. Bawakaraeng, specifically in montane habitat yet. This study was aimed to analyze diversity and abundance of Carabidae and Staphylinidae in four montane habitat types, i.e. agricultural area, pine forest, eucalypts and natural forest (1,835 m asl), and natural forest (2,165 m asl). They were collected using pitfall traps. A total of 42 carabid beetles belonging to nine species and 260 staphylinid beetles belonging to 37 species were collected. Diversity and abundance of Staphylinidae were higher than Carabidae, this is predicted because of higher mobility in Staphylinidae compared to Carabidae. In Carabidae, the highest species richness was recorded in agricultural area, whereas the highest species richness of Staphylinidae occurred in natural forest (2165 m asl). In Staphylinidae, the two largest subfamilies are Aleocharinae and Staphylininae. Aephinidius adelioides occupied the highest abundance of Carabidae and found in agricultural area. The differences in each montane habitat type are presumed to cause variation in species richness of soil beetles, especially for Carabidae.

Some patterns in distribution of the ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) at the agrocenoses of Ukraine

PutchkovAbstract:According to the habitat layers, ground beetles of agrocenoses of Ukraine were divided on three groups: preferential inhabitants of the soil (geobios), inhabitants of the surface of the soil and plant litter (stratobios) and preferential inhabitants of the plants (phytobios). Ground beetles of geobios were represented with about 20 species, from which only five species were relatively numerous. About 370 species were registered in stratobios (about 90 are dominants or subdominants). The inhabitants of the plant layer encompassed about 10 species, but most of them were rare in agrocenoses. Most spring zoophagous species of Carabidae (mainly species of the genus Poecilus) are characterized by a low level of aggregation (Ka = 0.25–0.35). A higher degree of aggregation was recorded for small species of ground beetles (Bembidion, Microlestes) and some mixophagous (Amara similata, A. aenea, Harpalus distinguendus). At summer, the higher level of aggregation was registered (Ka = 0.35–0.46), especially for summer-autumn group of ground beetles (Calathus ambiguus, C. melanocephalus, Harpalus rufipes) and some multi-seasonal species (Pterostichus melanarius). An essential factor affecting the distribution of ground beetles on the field is the density of the plants. On the plots with rare vegetation the accumulation of thermophilous and mesoxerophilous species (Poecilus crenuliger, P. koyi, P. puncticollis) was observed (significant correlation). Higher number of mesophilous and mesohygrophilous Carabidae (Bembidion properans, Poecilus cupreus, P. punctulatus) are registered on the plots with dense vegetation, especially during reproduction period. An increase in the number and diversity of the Carabidae are observed in relatively small fields (up to 50–60 ha), bordered by forest belts or natural biotops. In large fields (more than 100 ha) surrounded by similar crops, the abundance of dominant species of Carabidae was significantly decreased.

Ground beetles of the Ukraine (Coleoptera, Carabidae).
ZooKeys, 2011Co-Authors: A. V. PutchkovAbstract:A review of the ground beetles of the Ukrainian fauna is given. Almost 750 species from 117 genera of Carabidae are known to occur in the Ukraine. Approximately 450 species of ground beetles are registered in the Carpathian region. No less than 300 species of ground beetles are found in the forest zone. Approximately 400 species of Carabidae present in the forest-steppe zone are relatively similar in species composition to those in the forest territories. Some 450 species of Carabidae are inhabitants of the steppe zone. Representatives of many other regions of heterogeneous biotopes such as forest, semi desert, intrazonal, etc. can be found in the steppe areas. The fauna of Carabidae (ca. 100 species) of the lowlands of southern Ukraine (sandy biotopes), situated mostly in the Kherson region, is very peculiar. The fauna of the Crimean mountains contains about 300 species. Conservation measures for the Carabidae are discussed.

CutlerAbstract:: Carabidae (Coleoptera) are important natural enemies of many insect pests in various cropping systems. Their population dynamics and how they disperse determine how effective they are at carrying out the natural enemy function. There are robust patterns of community dynamics in annual cropping systems, but it is unclear if these would carry over into a relatively underexplored North American perennial crop. In Nova Scotia lowbush blueberry fields, we found that Carabidae diversity did not change with distance from field edge nor with time. Their activity density also did not change with time, but it did change with distance from field edge. We also found that the most abundant carabid of lowbush blueberry, Harpalus rufipes (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Carabidae), can disperse approximately 14.5 m/d. Our results shed more light on the community dynamics of Carabidae in lowbush blueberry fields and can help growers make informed decisions when it comes to incorporating natural enemies into their pest management practices.
