    Abstract:

    Abstract Most motorcycles in developing countries use Carburettors as the fuel delivery system especially for models with cubic capacity of less than 350 cc. However, small gasoline carburetted engines suffer from low operating efficiency, high fuel consumption and produce high level of hazardous emissions. A retrofit fuel injection system (FIS) is a system that is developed to totally replace the conventional Carburettor system to improve its fuel economy and exhaust emissions, providing a low-cost alternative in an effort to reduce fuel costs and air pollution. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the retrofit fuel injection technology developed for small gasoline spark ignition (SI) motorcycle engines from 50 cc to 350 cc. Three main retrofit FIS schemes – the throttle body injection (TBI), port fuel injection (PFI) and direct injection (DI) – are compared, in terms of configurations, complexity, costs and performances.

    Abstract:

    Abstract One of the major problems for the successful application of gasoline–alcohol mixtures as a motor fuel is the realization of a stable homogeneous liquid phase. To overcome this problem, a new carburetor was designed. With the use of this new carburetor, not only the phase problem was solved but also the alcohol ratio in the total fuel was increased. By using ethanol–gasoline blend, the availability analysis of a spark-ignition engine was experimentally investigated. Sixty percent ethanol and 40% gasoline blend was exploited to test the performance, the fuel consumption, and the exhaust emissions. As a result of this study, it is seen that a new dual fuel system could be serviceable by making simple modifications on the carburetor and these modifications would not cause complications in the carburetor system.

    Oxygenates Methyl Tertiary Buthyl Ether (MTBE), as an alternative substance for Tetra Ethyl Lead (TEL), which is used as substance to increase octane number gasoline fuel. However, need to be tested how its concentration influence about octane number, volatility fuel and engine performance. For engines with Carburettor, the liquid fuel must be volatile enough to produce a combustible fuel vapour air mixture at intake temperature and to produce completely fuel vapour air mixture inside the cylinder before combustion. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Oksigenat Methyl Tertiary Buthyl Ether (MTBE), sebagai alternatif pengganti Tetra Ethyl Lead (TEL), yang digunakan sebagai komponen peningkat angka oktan bahan bakar bensin. Namun, perlu dilakukan pengujian bagaimana pengaruh konsentrasinya terhadap angka oktan, sifat volatilitas bahan bakar dan unjuk kerja motor. Untuk motor yang menggunakan karburator, bahan bakar cair harus cukup mudah menguap untuk menyediakan campuran udara dan uap bahan bakar pada tempratur masuk dan menyediakan secara lengkap campuran udara dan uap bahan bakar didalam silinder sebelum terbakar.
