    Abstract:

    Sexual signals are often diagnostic of closely related species, and their taxonomic value at higher phylogenetic levels is often discussed. Complex signals such as birdsong are potentially rich in information regarding evolutionary history. However, natural or sexual selection, if pervasive enough, might distort that information. This has seldom been evaluated. We tested how ecological effects impact on the phylogenetic information of birdsong using a real case of flawed taxonomy: the reciprocal polyphyly of the genera Serinus and Carduelis. Major axes (principal components) of between-species song variation were not related to body size or habitat type. The main axis of song variation, reflecting syllable complexity and song length, was related to ecological indexes of sexual selection (latitude and ecological breadth), resulting in a positive latitudinal gradient in song elaboration. Song significantly supported monophyly over polyphyly for these genera, despite some song data having high phylogenetic signal (relative to the correct, polyphyletic phylogeny). Thus, the presence of high phylogenetic signal did not guarantee reliable taxonomic information at the genus level. The misleading phylogenetic information appears related to the latitudinal gradient in song elaboration plus the traditional Serinus and Carduelis spp. differing in latitude. We conclude that selection, in this case sexual selection, can pervasively distort the phylogenetic information even of complex and potentially information-rich signals.

    Abstract:

    Sexual selection has been hypothesized to promote speciation, but evidence relating sexual selection to differences in speciation rates among taxa is equivocal. We note that evolutionary changes in ornaments are the link connecting sexual selection to speciation, and that ornament evolution is influenced by many factors so that its relationship with the strength of sexual selection may not be linear. We test if the evolution of ornamental coloration in Carduelis finches is related with speciation and if more ornamented lineages speciate more. We found that coloration evolves with a speciational pattern, but we found no evidence that the evolutionary changes associated with speciation are predominantly gains in ornamentation. The speciational pattern was found for both carotenoid- and melanin-based coloration, suggesting that traits putatively under stronger sexual selection by female choice (carotenoid coloration) are not the sole ones facilitating reproductive isolation. We conclude that in the genus Carduelis the evolutionary lability of ornaments influences speciation more than the strength of sexual selection, and we suggest that ornament lability should be considered as a possible causal factor in studies comparing cladogenesis among taxa.

    Zusammenfassung Aus einem Kapuzenzeisig (Carduelis cucullata) konnte ein aviares Pockenvirus isoliert werden. Dieses Isolat erwies sich im Kreuzimmunisierungsversuch sowie hinsichtlich seines Wirtsspektrums mit dem Kanarienpockenvirus verwandt. Es bestanden jedoch Unterschiede zwischen diesen beiden Virusarten hinsichtlich des klinischen Bildes sowie hinsichtlich der Morphologie des zytopathischen Effektes in Huhnerembryofibroblastenkulturen und der Verdichtungsherde auf der Chorioallantoismembran. Summary Pox in the cowled siskin (Carduelis cucullata) An avian pox virus was isolated from a cowled siskin (Carduella cucullata). The isolate was related to the virus causing pox in canaries on the basis of cross-immunization test and host spectrum. Differences exist however between the two species in the clinical picture, the morphology of the cytopathic effects in chick embryo fibroblasts cultures and the pox formation on the chorioallantois membrane.     Abstract:

    A haemagglutinating virus was isolated in summer 1972 from a single free-living siskin (Carduelis spinus Linnaeus, 1758) in embryonated chicken eggs. Additional cases of morbidity or mortality were not observed in the area were the sick siskin was found. The virus was characterized as an avian influenza A virus of the subtype H7N1 and designated H7N1/Carduelis/Germany/72. The virus induced following experimental inoculation of chicken embryos a high rate mortality (mean death time approximately 24 hours), formed plaques in chicken embryo fibroblast cultures without addition of trypsin and has an intracerebral pathogenicity index (ICPI) of 1.80. Therefore, this virus is considered as a highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus. Canaries (Serinus canaries Linnaeus, 1758), that were housed in the same room with the siskin were accidentially exposed by contact to the sick siskin which resulted in virus transmission followed by conjunctivitis, apathy, anorexia and a high rate mortality.

    Myrsidea serini (Séguy, 1944) is recorded from three different passerine hosts from Argentina and Chile: Carduelis barbata (Molina, 1782) (Fringillidae), Chrysomus thilius petersi (Laubmann, 1934) and Agelaioides badius badius (Vieillot, 1819) (Icteridae). Somatic features and body measurements from available specimens belonging to these host-populations are compared with those recorded from Old World hosts, finding only some slight differences in certain body measurements (here interpreted as correlated to differences in host sizes), but none in chaetotaxy. This species was synoxenic with Myrsidea psittaci Carriker, 1955 on C. t. petersi in at least two localities in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Comparative studies of external chorionic architecture of the eggs, preferential sites of oviposition, prevalence has been carried out for both species, along with some remarks concerning the still problematic species, Myrsidea argentina (Kellogg, 1906), originally recorded off Carduelis magellanica (Vieillot, 1805)

Características somáticas e medidas corporais de exemplares disponíveis dessas populações de hospedeiros são comparados com os registrados a partir de hospedeiros do Velho Mundo, com apenas pequenas diferenças em algumas medidas no corpo (aqui interpretadas como relacionado a diferença entre o tamanho dos hospedeiros), mas similares com relação a sua quetotaxia. Esta espécie foi encontrada em sinoxenia com Myrsidea psittaci Carriker, 1955 parasitando C. t. petersi em pelo menos duas localidades na Província de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Estudos comparativos da superfície coriônica dos ovos, sítios preferenciais de oviposição, e prevalência foram realizados para ambas as espécies, além de algumas observações sobre uma espécie ainda problemática, Myrsidea argentina (Kellogg, 1906), originalmente registrada em Carduelis magellanica (Vieillot, 1805)
