The MCDC paradox

BhansaliAbstract:Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MCDC) is a structural testing strategy required to verify Level A software used in commercial aviation. In DO-178B, Level A software is defined as software whose anomalous behavior would cause or contribute to a Failure of system function resulting in a Catastrophic Failure Condition for the aircraft. Paradoxically, this technique does not detect common errors, yet it consumes a large portion (approximately 25%) of the verification budget because of the number of test cases required to satisfy this coverage. Furthermore, this approach is directly applicable to only high-level languages, making its applicability of limited value to assembly language programs and machine-level code which could have been generated by auto code tools. A simpler approach is suggested in this paper that would better detect these common errors and would be more cost-effective for all applications.

Experimental characterization of interlaminar shear strength

GanesanAbstract:Publisher Summary The stresses acting on the interface of two adjacent plies in composite laminates are called interlaminar stresses. Relative deformations between adjacent plies are caused by the stresses. If the stresses exceed the corresponding strength values that are constants for a particular composite material, Failure along the interface takes place. Interlaminar stresses cause delamination Failure. Delamination is the most critical Failure mode in laminated composite materials. It can cause unstable crack growth in composite structures that leads to a Catastrophic Failure Condition as a result of its influence on a component or structure made of laminated composite material in weakening its resistance to subsequent Failure modes. The resistance to delamination of laminated composite material can be characterized using two different approaches, which are, the strength-of-materials approach and the linear elastic fracture mechanics approach. This chapter discusses the interlaminar shear strength of composite material, which is used in the strength-of-materials approach as the controlling factor for the initiation of delamination due to interlaminar shear.

Systems Lightning Indirect Effect/High Intensity Radiated Fields Functional Testing on Aircraft

AllasiaAbstract:The certification authorities through CS25.1316 - system lightning protection - require for systems involved in a Catastrophic Failure Condition (FC) that “each electrical and electronic system that performs these functions must be designed and installed to ensure that the operation and operational capabilities of the systems to perform these functions are not adversely affected when the aeroplane is exposed to lightning”. To comply with this requirement a strategy is laid out, consisting of functional system tests on partial system (at supplier's facility) or aircraft system integrated benches as well as taking into account individual equipment qualification when relevant. Lightning and HIRF functional system test strategy has evolved through Airbus recent aircraft developments (A3405/6, A380, A400M and A350XWB) in order to optimize the verification of system under LIE/HIRF environment taking into account time and technical constraints. The approach is broken down into: Identification of the electrical and electronic system involved in critical functions, Analysis of their complexity and operations to determine the means of verification (individual equipment qualification, system test on integrated benches, aircraft tests), Priority setting, Definition of enveloping operational modes and related pass/fail criteria, Application of an optimised test method. The latest EMH functional system tests strategy is presented in this paper along with the results and findings of the test campaign. The main influencing factors are depicted as a worked example of a system test assessment.
