  • Comparison of the effects of walking and weight training programs on body image in middle-aged women: an experimental study.
American Journal of Health Promotion, 1993
Co-Authors: Larry A. Tucker, Rosemarie Mortell
    Abstract:

Abstract Purpose. This study was conducted to determine the effect of a resistive training intervention on body image in middle-aged women compared to an exercise walking program. Another purpose was to develop two multivariate models to explain improvement in body image among the lifters and walkers. Design. A pretest-posttest experimental design with random assignment of subjects to two exercise groups was employed. Setting. Subjects trained in their own homes and were tested at the university. Subjects. Participants were 60 women recruited from the local community with an average age of 42.5 ±4.2 years. Intervention. Subjects were randomly assigned to a resistive training or exercise walking program, both of which were three days per week and 12 weeks in duration. Measures. Body Cathexis was assessed using the Body Cathexis Scale; cardiovascular endurance was measured using the one-mile walk test, and muscular strength was assessed using standard weight training procedures. Results. After completion of...

  • Effects of weight training on the emotional well-being and body image of females: predictors of greatest benefit.
American Journal of Health Promotion, 1992
Co-Authors: Larry A. Tucker, Karen Maxwell
    Abstract:

Abstract Background. This study was conducted to determine the extent to which participation in a weight training intervention was associated with changes in the emotional well-being and body image of females compared to non-weight trainers. An ancillary objective was to study the extent to which psychological, physical, and demographic factors accounted for changes in emotional well-being and body image. Methods. The experimental group consisted of 60 females, and a comparison group was comprised of 92 females. Experimental subjects participated in a 15-week, two-day-per-week weight training intervention, while subjects in the comparison group did not participate in any weight training activities. Subjects were pre- and posttested on the General Well-Being Schedule and the Body Cathexis Scale. Experimental subjects were also tested in muscular strength and three skinfold measurements. Results. With pretest scores controlled, the weight trainers had significantly higher General Well-Being and Body Cathexi...

  • Women's Physical Size, Body-Cathexis, and Shopping for Apparel
    Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1990
    Co-Authors: Soyeon Shim, Gone Kotsiopulos
    Abstract:

The purposes of the study were to investigate (1) differences in body-Cathexis, satisfaction with apparel shopping, and shopping orientations among petite, average, and tall/large-size female apparel shoppers and (2) the relationship of body-Cathexis with satisfaction with apparel shopping and shopping orientations. Data from a national random sample of 482 female consumers were analyzed by one-way analyses of variance. These three groups differed in (1) total body-Cathexis and body-Cathexis on five body parts (height, facial features, face, leg length, and arms), (2) three items of apparel shopping attributes (size range available, number of stores, and general fit of clothing), and (3) two shopping orientations (confident shopper and catalog shopper). Body-Cathexis was slightly correlated with “satisfaction with general fit of clothing” but was not correlated with any shopping-orientation variables. Managerial implications based on the findings are discussed.

  • Short, Average-Height, Tall, and Big Men: Body-Cathexis, Clothing and Retail Satisfactions, and Clothing Behavior:
    Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1990
Co-Authors: Soyeon Shim, Antigone Kotsiopulos, Diane S. Knoll
    Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to examine the mean differences in body-Cathexis, satisfactions, and dissatisfactions with the clothing and retail attributes, and clothing behavior among short, average-height, tall, and big men. Data from a national random sample of 269 male consumers were analyzed. One-way analyses of variance showed that these four groups differed on mean body-Cathexis, satisfactions with clothing, and retail attributes, but not on clothing behavior. Managerial implications based on the findings are discussed.

  • Body shape and fit preference in body Cathexis and clothing benefits sought for professional African-American women
International Journal of Fashion Design Technology and Education, 2010
Co-Authors: Melissa B. Manuel, Lenda Jo Connell, Ann Beth Presley
    Abstract:

Little survey research exists that categorises the body shapes of African-American women or attempts to understand how these impact their clothing choices. This study profiled 153 professional African-American women regarding the influence of body shape and fit preference on their perceptions of body Cathexis (degree of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with one's body) (Secord, P. and Jourard, S., 1953. The appraisal of body Cathexis: body Cathexis and the self. Journal of Consulting Psychology, 17, 343–347) and clothing benefits sought (Hwang, J., 1996. Relationships between body-Cathexis, clothing benefits sought, and clothing behaviors, and effects of importance of meeting the ideal body image and clothing attitude. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg) for tailored career apparel. The body shapes (hourglass, rectangle, pear and inverted triangle) were self-reported. Fit preference was selected from a set of line drawings depicting a tailored...

  • Clothing fit preferences of young female adult consumers
International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology, 2005
Co-Authors: Marina Alexander, Lenda Jo Connell, Ann Beth Presley
    Abstract:

Purpose – This paper explores the relationships between body type and fit preferences with body Cathexis, clothing benefits sought by consumers, and demographic profiles of consumers.Design/methodology/approach – The survey instrument consisted of a questionnaire with scales assessing fit preference, body type, body Cathexis, clothing benefits sought and consumer demographics.Findings – Significant associations were found between body Cathexis (satisfaction with head/upper body, lower body, height, weight and torso) and body shape. The degree of satisfaction with different body parts depended on the body type of the individual. The level of satisfaction with head/upper body, height and torso did not vary by body type. No significant differences were found between fit preferences and body type for lower body garments.Research limitations/implications – The majority of respondents were between the ages 18 and 28, affluent Caucasian Americans, with an hourglass body type, who had a family income of $85,000 o...

  • Self-Esteem and Body Satisfaction in Male and Female Elementary School, High School, and University Students
    Sex Roles, 2004
Co-Authors: Jackie Frost, Stuart J. Mckelvie
    Abstract:

A total of 227 male and female elementary school, high school, and university students completed questionnaires concerning self-esteem, body satisfaction, and body build. Self-esteem was lower for female students than for male students overall, and for high school than for elementary school or university students. It was positively correlated with body satisfaction (Cathexis, body image, weight satisfaction), but the regression analysis only predicted self-esteem by Cathexis. The gender difference in self-esteem, and the relationship between self-esteem and Cathexis, may develop as early as elementary school. Suggestions for future research are given.
