  • Concise review of the genus Caulerpa J.V. Lamouroux
    Journal of Applied Phycology, 2019
Co-Authors: Mayalen Zubia, Kathryn Lee Morrissey, Stefano G A Draisma, Elena Varela-Álvarez
    Abstract:

The genus Caulerpa is highly diverse, especially in the Caribbean Sea, the Indo-Malay archipelago and the temperate waters of southern Australia. Currently, more than 100 species are recognized worldwide. Despite recent advances in taxonomy and phylogeny, there is still confusion about the delimitation and identification of some species due to tremendous phenotypic plasticity. Caulerpa is known to occupy a wide range of environmental niches and to have great invasive potential. More studies are necessary to understand better the ecology (invasiveness, the functional role of its microbiome) and the biology (reproduction, life cycle, and metabolism) of Caulerpa species, especially for economical species. Very few species, mainly C. lentillifera and C. racemosa known as green caviar, have been cultivated. Caulerpa is consumed mostly in Asia and Oceania, but its popularity tends to be on the increase in western countries with new nutritional practices (vegetarians, vegans, health foods). Being naturally enriched in essential nutrients and various health-promoting compounds, Caulerpa species are promising candidates for the design of functional foods and in the health and well-being sectors. The diversity of Caulerpa offers a remarkable potential for valorization with innovation opportunities. Caulerpa farming can bring significant economic and environmental (e.g., bioremediation, blue carbon pump) benefits if these farms are established in a sustainable approach.

  • Chemical Constituents and Biological Activity of a Marine Organism: Caulerpa mexicana, Bryothamnion triquetrum, Hypnea musciformis and Ircinia felix
    'Portal de Periodicos UFPB', 2014
    Co-Authors: Daysianne Pereira De ,lira
    Abstract:

The Brazil is among the first 10 countries in the ranking of the world's biodiversity and to present one of the largest coastal areas in the tropical region of the world has awakened to the importance of marine products as a source of richness of our flora and as a source of unbeatable structural diversity of chemicals of various classes, able to build molecules of high structural complexity, with absolute chemo, regio and stereoselectivity constituents. Being aware that one of the most important aspects in bioprospeção flora and fauna is the knowledge about the chemical and pharmacological potential aquatic habitat found on the Brazilian coast in particular Paraiba coast, aimed to isolate and identify the chemical constitintes three species of algae : Caulerpa mexicana, Hypnea musiformis and Bryothamnion triquetrum; and a sponge: Ircnia felix, as well as evaluate their cytotoxic and antitumor activities, and partnerships to conduct assessment of the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of these products. Thus, by standard chromatographic and spectroscopic methods IR, 1H NMR and 13C and uni-dimensional, GC-MS, MALDI-MS and compared with literature values was possible to isolate and identify seven substances: a steroid and β-Sitosterol caulerpina one alkaloid from Caulerpa mexicana; Saringosterol one steroid and barbiturate 2,4,6 (1H, 3H, 5H)-pirimidinatriona, 5-ethyl-5-phenyl of Hypnea musciformis; one cholest-4-en-3-one steroid and phthalate Di-isobutilftalato of Bryothamnion triquetrum; and a derivative of N - [(4E)-3-hydroxy-1 - {[(sodiooxi) sulfonyl] oxy} non-2-en-4-yl] dotriacontanamida of Ircinia felix, first reported in the literature. The methanol extracts of Hypenea musciformis and Bryothamnion triquetrum showed high and low cytotoxicity, respectively, when evaluated their cytotoxicity in erythrocytes of Swiss mice. However, these same extracts did not exhibit cytotoxic activity against tumor cells of Ehrlich Ascitic. And so, through partnerships held was observed that extracts of Caulerpa mexicana and Bryothamnion triquetrum showed significant results in different models of inflammation and the bis-indole alkaloid, the major substance of Caulerpa mexicana in tumor models of inflammation and espamolítica activity showed significaivos results. • Identity and origin of a slender Caulerpa taxifolia strain introduced into the Mediterranean Sea
    Botanica Marina, 2013
Co-Authors: Dorris N. Jongma, Marc Verlaque, Davide Campo, Emanuela Dattolo, Daniela D'esposito, Antonino Duchi, Peter Grewe, John Huisman, Mehmet B. Yokes, Gabriele Procaccini
    Abstract:

On the basis of morphological and molecular studies, we identified the Australian endemic green alga known as Caulerpa distichophylla along the coasts of Sicily (Italy, Mediterranean Sea). The slender Caulerpa previously reported as C. taxifolia from southeastern Turkey (Gulf of Iskenderun) also belongs to C. distichophylla . Morphologically, C. distichophylla clearly differs from C. taxifolia in its slender thallus and the lack of large rhizoidal pillars. However, genetic data do not provide undisputed evidence that the species are distinct. Sequences of the tuf A cpDNA gene and of the cp 16S rDNA intron-2 sequences separated the two taxa by only one single nucleotide mutation, whereas ITS rDNA sequences did not clearly distinguish them. The new combination Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla is therefore proposed. Western and eastern Mediterranean populations of C. taxifolia var. distichophylla are probably the result of introduction events from southwestern Australia. Although the vector of primary introductions remains unknown (aquarium trade or shipping), maritime traffic appears to be the most likely vector of secondary dispersal. C. taxifolia var. distichophylla is closely related to C. taxifolia , hence interbreeding with the other C. taxifolia strains in the Mediterranean Sea might be expected to occur.

  • the Caulerpa racemosa invasion a critical review
    Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2008
Co-Authors: Judith C Klein, Marc Verlaque
    Abstract:

Abstract Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea is a marine Chlorophyta introduced into the Mediterranean Sea from south-western Australia. Since 1990, it has been invading the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands, raising ecological problems. Although this invasion event can be considered as one of the most serious in the history of species introduced into the Mediterranean Sea, C. racemosa has not triggered as much attention as the famous “killer alga” Caulerpa taxifolia. The aim of the present study was: (i) to summarize the current state of knowledge with regard to the distribution, the various biological and ecological characteristics of the introduced C. racemosa and its impact on the Mediterranean coastal environment; (ii) to discuss the various hypotheses regarding the explanation for its rapid and successful spread; (iii) to investigate the disparity in the treatment of C. racemosa and Caulerpa taxifolia invasions; and (iv) to outline future research needs.
