The antioxidant activity of its methanol extract was evaluated by several in vitro experiments including phosphomolybedum assay, DPPH assay, β-carotene/linoleic acid, ferric and cupric reducing power. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also evaluated. The methanol extract of Centaurea pulcherrima var. pulcherrima showed the superior free radical scavenging activity, linoleic acid inhibition capacity, reducing power and also had the highest total phenolic content. A significant relationship between antioxidant capacity and total phenolic components was found. The oils of Centaurea taxa were also analysed for fatty acid concentration by gas chromatography. The principal fatty acids in the species were palmitic acid (23.38-30.49%) and linoleic acid (20.19-29.93%). These findings suggest that the Centaurea species could be used as a potential source of new natural antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids in food industry, cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations.

The antioxidant activities of these extracts were evaluated by in vitro models including, phosphomolybdenum assay, free radical scavenging assays (DPPH and ABTS), β-carotene/linoleic acid test system, metal chelating assay, FRAP assay, ferric and cupric reducing power. Cholinesterase inhibitory activities were examined using Ellman's colorimetric method. Total phenol, flavonoid, and saponin contents were also measured. Among the six Centaurea extracts evaluated, the highest antioxidant abilities were obtained from C. polypodiifolia var. pseudobehen. Methanolic extracts from C. polypodiifolia var. pseudobehen and C. antalyense had a noticeable inhibition towards AChE and BChE. These findings suggest that Centaurea species could be an anticholinesterase agent and antioxidant resource in some industries, such as food, pharmacology, and cosmetics.

This study was designed to examine antioxidant potentials and fatty acid profiles of five Centaurea species from Turkey flora. Antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts from these species were evaluated by six different methods: phosphomolybdenum assay, free radical scavenging assay, β-carotene/linoleic acid test system, metal chelating activity, ferric and cupric reducing power. Total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations of each extract were also determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and aluminum chloride. The results of these assay showed a significant antioxidant capacity in all researched extracts. Centaurea cheirolopha extract, with the highest amount of total phenolic and flavonoids, showed the highest antioxidant activities in all assay, except for metal chelating. Fatty acid profiles of these species were examined by GC-FID and 30 fatty acids were identified. Palmitic, linoleic, oleic, and linolenic acid were detected as the main components. The results of the study indicated that the Centaurea species can be considered as a source of new natural antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

The chromosome number and morphology of 8 taxa belonging to the genus Centaurea were investigated using an image analysis system. Among these taxa, the chromosome numbers were as follows: 2n = 18 in C. cariensis Boiss. subsp. niveotomentosa (Hub.-Mor.) Wagenitz, C. lycaonica Boiss. & Heldr., C. virgata Lam., and C. polyclada DC.; 2n = 24 in C. cyanus L.; 2n = 36 in C. virgata and C. cariensis Boiss. subsp. cariensis: 2n = 40 in C. urvillei DC. subsp. urvillei; 2n = 54 in C. tuzgoluensis Aytac & H.Duman. In 5 taxa mixoploidy was observed (C. lycaonica, C. urvillei subsp. urvillei, C. cariensis subsp. cariensis, C. virgata, and C. tuzgoluensis). Based on karyotypic data for this genus, 3 basic chromosome numbers in Centaurea taxa were observed (x = 9, 10, and 12). Furthermore, ideograms are given for all the Centaurea taxa studied.

2002Co-Authors: Ahmet Duran, Hayri DumanAbstract:Turkey is one of the main centres of diversity for the genus Centaurea (Wagenitz 1986). In the Flora of Turkey, 172 species plus six imperfectly known species of Centaurea were accepted (Wagenitz 1975). Since then six new species have been described from Turkey: Centaurea mykalea Hub.-Mor., C. iconiensis Hub.-Mor., C. cariensiformis Hub.-Mor., C. nydeggeri Hub.Mor., C. yozgatensis Wagenitz, and C. hadimensis Wagenitz, K. Ertuârul & H. Dural (Davis et al. 1988, Wagenitz & Hellwig 1996, Wagenitz et al. 1998). One species (C. amplifolia Boiss. & Heldr.) was added as a new record for Turkey by Davis et al. (1988). In this paper, we describe two new species, after which the total number of Centaurea species known from Turkey raises to 187.

However, counterbalancing genetic isolation contributes to maintaining taxonomic limits and fostering rapid speciation processes. Radiant (R) and non-radiant (NR) capitula are two major floral morphs present in Centaurea. However, it is unclear how gene flow affects the distribution of floral morphotypes across populations and taxa. We have investigated the taxonomic differentiation and potential effect of genetic isolation in R and NR populations of Iberian Centaurea sects. Jacea (Mill.) Pers. ex Dumort. and Lepteranthus (Neck. ex DC.) Dumort. A total of 510 individuals from 58 populations (12 taxa) were analyzed using 165 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Genetic diversity and structure parameters were estimated at the taxon, population, and floral morphotypic levels. We tested whether there was correlation between population pairwise fixation index (Fst) genetic distances and the inbreeding coefficient (Fis), taken as a surrogate of reproductive isolation between the R and NR morphotypes of each group, and also taking into account geographic distances, using distance-based redundancy analysis (dbRDA). We also performed isolation by distance (IBD) tests between different floral morphotypes, aiming to infer the impact of genetic isolation on evolutionary and taxonomic divergence of the individuals. The taxa of Centaurea sects. Jacea and Lepteranthus constitute independent evolutionary lineages. Most of the detected genetic clusters match the taxonomic circumscription proposed in our most recent treatments. Genetic diversity was highest in C. debeauxii Godr. & Gren. subsp. debeauxii and subsp. grandiflora (Gaudin ex Schubl. & G. Martens) Devesa & Arnelas and in C. jacea L. subsp. angustifolia (DC.) Gremli (R) and lowest in C. nevadensis Boiss. & Reut. (NR) within the Centaurea sect. Jacea clade, whereas it was highest in C. linifolia L. within the Centaurea sect. Lepteranthus clade. Population-level dbRDA tests did not detect a significant correlation of R versus NR genetic distances and Fis values in any of the studied cases; by contrast, they detected significant correlation with longitude (C. jacea subsp. angustifolia, C. debeauxii, C. linifolia–C. stuessyi Arnelas, Devesa & E. Lopez) or latitude (C. nigra L.). IBD analysis at the individual level showed that, in addition to geography, other morphotype-related factors may affect the genetic differentiation of R versus NR morphs in C. nigra, C. debeauxii, and C. linifolia–C. stuessyi. These results suggest that the fixation of the different morphs within the same taxon or group may be explained by geographic isolation, though we could not discount other potential unknown factors that could have contributed to microspeciation in these recently divergent populations, which originated only several thousands of years ago.

Phylogeny of highly hybridogenous Iberian Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) taxa and its taxonomic implications

We reconstructed an updated phylogeny of Iberian species of Centaurea sects. Centaurea, Jacea, Lepteranthus and Phalolepis by sampling representatives from 48 taxa (~60% of the taxonomic variation). Phylogenetic trees and haplotypic networks were based on ITS and trnLF sequences, and Bayesian dating analysis on ITS data. We found two main lineages within this monophyletic group: (1) a W Mediterranean Centaurea and Phalolepis plus C. diffusa (CP) clade; and (2) an E Mediterranean – Eurosiberian Jacea and Lepteranthus (JL) clade. Our analyses provide new reconstructions for species of C. sects. Jacea and Lepteranthus that support new taxonomic circumscriptions. The inferred divergence times indicated succesive splits of the CP and JL lineages during the Miocene (e.g. CP/JL, Serravalian; Jacea/Lepteranthus, Tortonian; C. hyssopifolia, C. gr. janeri, C. gr. exarata, Messinian) and the Pliocene (C. linifolia/C. antennata). Interspecific hybridizations and polyploidizations likely took place during the Pleistocene (1.5–0.7 Ma) interglacials, when several hybrid lineages apparently originated (e.g. C. x decipiens). Allopatric speciation probably played an important role in the diversification of the Iberian Centaurea taxa, since the origins of several endemic species occurred during mid-late Pleistocene times (2.2–1.3 Ma) in several disjunct Iberian ranges.

Se aporta una clave para la dentificacion de los taxones e hibridos, asi como su descripcion morfologica e informacion sobre la distribucion geografica, apetencias ecologicas, fenologia y numero cromosomico.English. A taxonomic review of Centaurea sect. Jacea (Mill.) Pers. in the Iberian Peninsula was done. Twelve taxa are recognized and a new combination is proposed: C. nigra subsp. endressii (Dostal) Arnelas & Devesa. A key for the identification of taxa and hybrids are provided, also their morphological description, information on geographical distribution, their ecology, their phenology and their chromosome numbers are given.

Centaurea), an endemic to the north-central and north-west Iberian Peninsula, was studied. Seven subspecies with reasonably well-defined areas are recognized, of which C. langei subsp. dominguezii E. Lopez, Devesa & Arnelas is described as new, and for the others the following combinations are proposed: C. langei subsp. exilis (Arenes) E. Lopez, Devesa & Arnelas, C. langei subsp. coutinhoi (Franco) E. Lopez, Devesa & Arnelas, C. langei subsp. geresensis (Arenes) E. Lopez, Devesa & Arnelas, C. langei subsp. kheilii (Pau) E. Lopez, Devesa & Arnelas, and C. langei subsp. rothmalerana (Arenes) E. Lopez, Devesa & Arnelas. Nomenclatural and taxonomic synonyms are provided for each taxon, most of which are typified. For C. langei subsp. dominguezii, the chromosome number was also studied (2n = 18).

Centaurea ), an endemic species of SW Europe, is discussed. It is represented by three subspecies with well-defined areas: subsp. paniculata , subsp. leucophaea (Jord.) Arcang. and subsp. oscensis , a new subspecies, whose chromosome number is counted (2 n = 18). Moreover, the variability of C. hanryi Jord, an endemism of NE Spain and SE France is studied, and finally, the distribution in the Iberian Peninsula of the neophyte C. diffusa Lam. is commented.

The antioxidant capacity of the extracts was evaluated by different assays, including total phenolic content, phosphomolybdenum assay, free radical scavenging activity (DPPH assay), beta-carotene/linoleic acid bleaching assay, iron (III) and cupric reduction assay. The findings showed that the methanolic extract of Centaurea pulchella has the strongest antioxidant capacity compared to other two Centaurea species. The order of the antioxidant properties of Centaurea species were C. pulchella>C. patula>C. tchihatcheffii. Thirty fatty acids were identified in the oils of three Centaurea species. The major fatty acids of these species were found to be linoleic acid from C. pulchella and C. tchihatcheffii, and alpha-linolenic acid from C. patula. The study concluded that the Centaurea species can be used as a source of natural antioxidants and essential fatty acids.

Capitula essential oil composition of seven Centaurea species (sect. Acrocentron, Asteraceae) – Taxonomic implication and ecological significance
'Elsevier BV', 2019Co-Authors: Novaković Jelica, Rajčević Nemanja, Garcia-jacas Núria, Susanna De La Serna, Alfonso, Marin, Petar D., Janaćković PedjaAbstract:In this paper, we analyzed the capitula essential oil composition of seven Centaurea species, six of which belong to Centaurea calocephala complex, and the related species Centaurea melanocephala Pančić (subgenus Acrocentron, tribus Cardueae, subtribus Centaureinae) which inhabit Balkans Peninsula. The volatile organic compounds were extracted by simultaneous distillation extraction, using Likens-Nickerson type apparatus and the oils were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. In total, 146 compounds were identified (95.5–99.4% of the total oil composition). The essential oils were dominated by sesquiterpenes (39.1–81.7%). The most abundant components were β-caryophyllene (3.1–28.3%), caryophyllene oxide (4.7–31.2%), germacrene D (2.9–22.2%), followed by n-hexacosane, [2Z,6E]-farnesol, eudesma-4(15),7-dien-1-β-ol, α-cadinole, germacrene B, trans-verbenol, and hexanal that were present in some samples in relatively high abundances. The geographic region and the color of capitula were analyzed in correlation with essential oil composition. Also, all investigated species are characterized by the different amount of most dominant components, which leads to the hypothesis that they “choose” different strategies: different combination and amounts of attractants for pollinators. Este estudio fue realizado sobre la base del análisis de bibliografía específica, base de datos, especímenes de herbario, análisis morfométricos y viajes de campo. Como resultado se reconoció para Argentina nueve especies introducidas, de las cuales siete están naturalizadas, principalmente de la región pampeana, una es dudosa en la actualidad para el país y otra, subespontánea: Centaurea benedicta (cardo bendito), C. calcitrapa (abrepuño), C. cyanus (azulejo), C. diffusa, C. iberica (abrepuño gigante), C. jacea (escoba yesquera), C. melitensis (abrepuño), C. nigrescens y C. solstitialis (abrepuño). C. cyanus se considera subespontánea, C. jacea invasora de áreas urbanas, C. nigrescens como dudosa para nuestro país y el resto malezas.Peer Reviewe

The first part of the paper deals with the overall classification of the genus, which we propose to divide into three subgenera: subgenus Centaurea, subgenus Cyanus and subgenus Lopholoma. The second part of this publication gives a recopilation of the species of the redefined section Centaurea, a group that includes former sections Acrolophus (sect. Centaurea s. str.), Phalolepis and Willkommia, together with taxonomical, geographical, ecological and karyological considerations. Finally, new descriptions or nomenclatural combinations are proposed to correlate nomenclature to the new classification: a new combination (sect. Acrocentron subsect. Chamaecyanus) is proposed in subgenus Lopholoma; three new sections (sects. Akamantis, Cnicus, and Hyerapolitanae) are described in subgenus Centaurea; two subsections (subsects. Phalolepis and Willkommia) in sect. Centaurea; and three subsections (subsects. Exarata, Jacea, and Subtilis) in sect. Phrygia.[ES]En este trabajo presentamos los resultados de nuestras investigaciones de larga fecha en el género Centaurea. Morphologic variability in the Iberian Peninsula of Centaurea paniculata L. (Centaurea L. sect. Centaurea), an endemic species of SW Europe, is discussed. It is represented by three subspecies with well-defined areas: subsp. paniculata, subsp. leucophaea (Jord.) Arcang. and subsp. oscensis, a new subspecies, whose chromosome number is counted (2n = 18). Moreover, the va - riability of C. hanryi Jord, an endemism of NE Spain and SE France is studied, and finally, the distribution in the Iberian Peninsula of the neophyte C. diffusa Lam. is commented.López, E. & Devesa, J.A. 2010.
