    Objective:The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare hand tracings on conventional lateral Cephalograms with different calibration techniques available in dolphin imaging on digital lateral Cephalogram. Materials and Methods:50 Conventional lateral Cephalogram and 50 digital lateral Cephalogram were taken in (NHP) at same period of timeon the same patient. Two angular measurements Facial Axis Angle and ANB angle two linear measurements Sella to Nasion and Sella to articulare have been taken. Conclusion: According to our study conventional when compared with calibration techniques ruler has show only one significant value DPI and land mark has shown two significant values so our study conclude that using ruler is the better option for calibration of digital radiograph. As ruler is more accurate to conventional we compare DPI and Landmark techniques to ruler, landmark shows less variation with ruler so according to our study the second option for calibration of digital radiograph is landmark and last option comes DPI.

    Abstract:

    Summary McNamara line analysis is often utilised in orthognathic surgery and is particularly useful in that it can easily express the extent of maxillo-mandibular deformity quantitatively. However, in craniofacial dysostosis (CFD), the location of the porion (PR) is sometimes displaced inferiorly. The McNamara line depends on the Frankfurt horizontal plane (FH plane), and hence, its deviation is often extremely distorted in CFD. The objective of this study was to enable more correct reflection of deformities of CFD patients on lateral Cephalogram analysis. The lateral Cephalograms of 152 Asian individuals were involved. ∠basion(BA).orbitale(Or).PR, ∠BA. nasion(NA).PR, and the distance from BA to PR on the BA-NA plane were measured and each standard range was established. Using these ranges, modified PR (mPR) is supposed to lie within a fairly small area. Second, we utilised mPR in the practice of McNamara line analysis in CFD patients. In both cases in the present study, it was confirmed that modified McNamara line analysis can express the deformities more precisely than conventinal analysis, as far as the maxillo-mandibular relationship is concerned. However, particularly in Case 2, both the cranio-maxillary and cranio-mandibular relationships were not entirely consistent with the lateral profile appearance even on modified McNamara line analysis.

    Abstract:

    The wide prediction intervals obtained with age estimation methods based on third molar development could be reduced by combining these dental observations with age-related skeletal information. Therefore, on cephalometric radiographs, the most accurate age-estimating skeletal variable and related registration method were searched and added to a regression model, with age as response and third molar stages as explanatory variable. In a pilot set up on a dataset of 496 (283 M; 213 F) cephalometric radiographs, the techniques of Baccetti et al. (2005) (BA), Seedat et al. (2005) (SE), Caldas et al. (2007) and Rai et al. (2008) (RA) were verified. In the main study, data from 460 (208 F, 224 M) individuals in an age range between 3 and 26 years, for which at the same day an orthopantogram and a Cephalogram were taken, were collected. On the orthopantomograms, the left third molar development was registered using the scoring system described by Gleiser and Hunt (1955) and modified by Kohler (1994) (GH). On the Cephalograms, cervical vertebrae development was registered according to the BA and SE techniques. A regression model, with age as response and the GH scores as explanatory variable, was fitted to the data. Next, information of BA, SE and BA + SE was, respectively, added to this model. From all obtained models, the determination coefficients and the root mean squared errors were calculated. Inclusion of information from Cephalograms based on the BA, as well as the SE, technique improved the amount of explained variance in age acquired from panoramic radiographs using the GH technique with 48%. Inclusion of cephalometric BA + SE information marginally improved the previous result (+1%). The RMSE decreased with 1.93, 1.85 and 2.03 years by adding, respectively, BA, SE and BA + SE information to the GH model. The SE technique allows clinically the fastest and easiest registration of the degree of development of the cervical vertebrae. Therefore, the choice of technique to classify cervical vertebrae development in addition to third molar development is preferably the SE technique.

    Abstract:

    Introduction: It is necessary to evaluate skeletal maturation in functional orthodontic treatments. The most common method for determining skeletal maturation is made upon assessing hand-wrist radiographs. Recently, different methods use cervical vertebrae on lateral Cephalogram to determine skeletal maturation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between different methods of assessing skeletal maturation using cervical vertebrae and to compare them with hand-wrist radiograph. Materials & Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, hand-wrist radiographs and lateral Cephalograms in NHP were obtained from for 47 patients aged from 10 to 15 whom were admitted to the department of orthodontics of Mashhad dental school. On hand-wrist radiographs, skeletal maturation was assessed by means of TW3 method. Cervical vertebrae maturation was evaluated on lateral Cephalogram using the methods described by Lamparski, Mito, Roman and Hassel & Farman. Correlation coefficient was determined between skeletal maturation values based on cervical vertebrae and hand-wrist radiographs by Pearson and Spearman analysis. Results: Correlation coefficient between cervical vertebral age (using Lamparski, s method) and skeletal age(using TW3 method) was 0.81. For Mito, s, Roman, s and Hassel & Farman, s methods the correlation coefficient was 0.80, 0.997 and 0.995 respectively. No significant correlation was revealed between cervical vertebral bone age (using Mito, s & Lamparski, s methods) in 10-13 year old boys and that of hand-wrist base (P>0.05). Conclusion: In all groups using, Roman, s and Hassel & Farman, s methods had a high correlation between cervical vertebrae and hand-wrist skeletal maturation. So, these two methods can be used as relable alternatives for hand-wrist radiograph in skeletal maturation evaluation.
