    Abstract:

    Nodes in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) are more vulnerable and there is no predefined infrastructure in such a network. Providing secure communication in these networks is an important and challenging problem. Among all proposed schemes, the model of using distributed certificate authorities (CA) based on threshold cryptography and proactive share update using a cluster-based architecture seems to be a promising approach. However, there are two issues that are not well studied in the current literature for this model: (1) how to locate enough CA servers, and (2) how to perform the proactive share update. In this paper, we propose two efficient schemes with low system overhead to tackle these two problems. Compared with existing approaches, our CA architecture provides faster CA services to user nodes at reduced system overhead. The effectiveness of our proposed schemes has been verified by extensive simulation.

    In this paper, we propose an architecture for providing distributed certificate authority (CA) service in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET), based on threshold cryptography. We have two major contributions: 1) we make use of the cluster structure to provide CA service, and design a scheme for locating CA server nodes in MANET; 2) we provide a proactive secret share update protocol, which periodically updates CA secret shares with low system overhead. Compared with existing approaches, our CA architecture provides faster CA services to user nodes at reduced system overhead.

    Abstract:

    Dynamic distributed systems like peer-to-peer systems, overlay networks and mobile ad hoc networks must execute their applications using distributed resources and in a decentralized way. The structure (composition and topology) of these systems changes frequently due to nodes joining or leaving the network, or due to mobility, faults and networks partitions. Distributed algorithms projected to this class of systems must be able to deal with the occurrence of these events and to self-adapt dynamically the application according to changes in its execution environment. In this paper, we propose a dynamic, self-adaptable and intrusion tolerant certificate authority (CA) designed to operate in mobile ad hoc networks. This CA is composed by a set of mobile devices present in the network, which forms a group of servers that supports CA functions. This architecture is based on a dynamic systems model and was conceived to manage changes in the membership of the servers group. This paper introduces an algorithmic base that allows the CA to reconfigure itself, guaranteeing the availability and the inviolability of the certification service.

    Abstract Mobile wireless ad hoc networks that are resistant to adversarial manipulation are necessary for distributed systems used in military and security applications. Critical to the successful operation of these networks, which operate in the presence of adversarial stressors, are robust and efficient information assurance methods. In this report we describe necessary enhancements for a distributed certificate authority (CA) used in secure wireless network architectures. Necessary cryptographic algorithms used in distributed CAs are described and implementation enhancements of these algorithms in mobile wireless ad hoc networks are developed. The enhancements support a network's ability to detect compromised nodes and facilitate distributed CA services. We provide insights to the impacts the enhancements will have on network performance with timing diagrams and preliminary network simulation studies. 4 This page intentionally left blank.
