    Abstract:

    In the system of logging machines, a factor such as the density of wood affects all components of the system. However this dependence can be more noticeable in the performance of wood felling, where logging machines have approximately the same saw body, such as a chain saw. In this regard, the problem of determining the dependence of the chainsaw on the density of wood, substantiation of effective options for the number of Chainsaws in the assortment and whiplash method of logging is quite relevant. In the Far East of Russia, in particular, in the Amur region, the forest growth conditions are different from the western ones and therefore the properties of the woof differ from the generally accepted ones. The article describes forest growth conditions that influence the properties of the wood in areas of the Amur region. Using the method of density determination, the density of larch, pine and birch were studied first time in the areas of the region. The dependence of the density on humidity, age, species, season of the year and the area of growth was found out. The research results showed that in the Amur region at a humidity of 70% the density of larch varies from 745 to 1 089 kg m⁻³, pine from 435 to 1 081 kg m⁻³, birch from 403 to 878 kg m⁻³.

    The problem of determining the dependence of the chainsaw on the density of wood, substantiation of effective options for the number of Chainsaws in the assortment and whiplash method of logging is quite relevant. In the Far East of Russia, in particular, in the Amur region, the forest growth conditions are different from the western ones, and therefore, the properties of the wood differ from the generally accepted ones. The article describes forest growth conditions that influence the properties of the wood in areas of the Amur region. Using the method of density determination, the density of larch, pine and birch were studied for first time in the areas of the region. The dependence of the density on humidity, age, species, season of the year and the area of growth was found out. The results of the research showed that under humidity of 70%, the density of larch was 1088.99 kg/m³, it was 919.8 kg/m³ for pine and it was for birch 915.9 kg/m³.

  • Long Term Repair and Maintenance Cost of some Professional Chainsaws

    A sample of 44 professional Chainsaws was used to determine service life and maintenance cost for this type of equipment. Data were sourced from a large workshop, catering for regional forest crews in north western Italy. Chainsaw service life exceeded 3000 hours, and spread over a period of 6 to 9 years. Under these conditions, maintenance cost averaged 820 €, or about 120 % of the investment cost. Annual usage was highest and maintenance cost lowest for mid-size Chainsaws, in the 2 to 3.5 kW power class. Models at the two extreme ends (i.e. 3.5 kW) configured as specialist tools, which resulted in a lower usage and a higher maintenance cost per hour. The largest number of interventions (45% of the total) concerned the engine and the carburettor. The average chainsaw in the sample underwent 31 maintenance interventions over its service life. The cost per intervention varied between 7 and 50 €. Intervention cost was highest for engine work, and the lowest for overhaul. Overall, parts accounted for two-thirds of the cost, and labour for the remaining third. This study offers information about chainsaw service life and maintenance cost, obtained with scientific methods and hence suitable for general use

Profitability of sawn timber processing was found to be highly sensitive to sawing recovery rate and therefore both the use of saws with a smaller kerf and training of the saw operators are recommended. Profitability was also found to be highly sensitive to haulage distance of sawn timber. Negative returns were predicted for a hauling distance of more than 2.25 km and 3 km for chainsawn timber processing and bandsaw milling, respectively.     Various forms of portable or 'walkabout' sawmills have become popular for timber extraction and in-forest milling in tropical forestry in recent years. A number of advantages over larger fixed-site mills have been recognised, such as reduced transport costs and utilisation of smaller logs and branches. Portable bandsaws, with a thin blade kerf generally give rise to a greater timber recovery than traditional circular saws. Chainsaws have been criticised for greater timber wastage, and in some cases their use for timber extraction has been declared illegal. The choice of appropriate technology involves a tradeoff with respect to various factors including capital outlays, maintenance capability and costs, labour efficiency and timber recovery rate. If these items are factored into the overall average cost curve, it becomes apparent that both portable sawmills and chainsaw milling do have an important role in tropical small-scale forestry. the latter are particularly useful for flitch cutting as a first stage of milling.
