    Abstract:

    AIM: This study aims to demonstrate the potential of hydroacoustics in the study of behavior of the invertebrate Chaoborus and fish in neotropical water environments; METHODS: Synoptic campaigns were conducted in May and June-2008 in Dom Helvecio and Carioca lakes, at the Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (MG), and Nado reservoir, Belo Horizonte (MG). The acoustic scattering of targets was studied using a downward-oriented split-beam 200 kHz echosounder; RESULTS: We detected clear echo signals from fish and Chaoborus larvae, which can be viewed in high density in all environments studied. The normal migratory behavior of the larvae of Chaoborus could be easily monitored in the Dom Helvecio Lake and the Nado reservoir. However, this behavior was not seen in Carioca Lake; CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed the potential application of acoustic approaches to study the behavior of fish and zooplankton organisms in freshwater aquatic systems.

    Abstract:

    The present study deals with the ecological impacts of the introduction of two alien species of piscivorous fish in several lakes of the Middle Rio Doce lake district in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was demonstrated that these effects were not restricted only to the fish community. The introduction of the predatory red piranha Pygocentrus nattereri and the tucunare Cichla cf. ocellaris caused not only a sharp decrease in the number of native fish species, but also major shifts in other trophic levels. Just after the fish were introduced, most lakes began to show conspicuous changes in phytoplankton species composition, in which Cyanophyceae gradually came to dominate. The zooplankton community lost several species, and in some cases, such as Lake Carioca, all the cladoceran species disappeared. On the other hand, invertebrate predators, represented by the dipteran Chaoboridae, boomed in the lake, with higher densities of exotic species, probably as a result of the "ecological release" by reduction of the original fish fauna. There was a general trend of species loss in different trophic levels. All these changes are apparently associated with decreases in water quality. The present situation in these lakes demands new approaches to the management and conservation of these ecosystems.

    Foi analisado o efeito do predador invertebrado, Chaoborus brasiliensis (Diptera, Chaoboridae), sobre a distribuicao espacial dos taxons predominantes da comunidade zooplanctonica de um reservatorio tropical raso, lagoa do Nado, explorando as mudancas na sobreposicao espacial entre predador e presas durante a migracao vertical diaria. A comunidade zooplanctonica apresentou uma variada gama de respostas a pressao de predacao exercida pelas larvas de Chaoborus. Diversos taxons exibiram MVD ( Brachionus falcatus, B. caudatus, B. angularis, Moina micrura, Thermocyclops minutus ) e outros em que esse comportamento nao foi tao nitido ou nao foi detectado ( K. cochlearis, K. tropica, K. bostoniensis e nauplios de T. minutus ). A maioria dos taxons estudados tiveram a sua distribuicao vertical associada a presenca desse predador invertebrado, e a migracao vertical diaria dessas especies foi importante na reducao da sobreposicao espacial com o predador. Alem disso, o estudo demonstrou que esses padroes experimentam consideraveis mudancas ao longo do ciclo sazonal.

    Abstract:

    Vertical migration of Chaoborus brasiliensis (Diptera, Chaoboridae) larvae in Nado Lagoon, a tropical reservoir in Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Many investigations have shown that Chaoborus larvae develop diel vertical migration (DVM) to avoid fish predation and that this migration's amplitude is often associated with the instar stage. In this study, the Chaoborus brasiliensis vertical distribution was monitored in a shallow reservoir (Nado Lagoon, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), during the diel cycle, from October 1999 to September 2000. The mean depth in which each stage was found was estimated day and night and compared to their migration amplitude. No association was found between instar phase and DVM amplitude. Nevertheless, a clear association was found between the dissolved oxygen critical concentration and the amplitude of Chaoborus DVM. 1.0 mg.1(-1) was considered the concentration below which fish cannot survive. This finding gives support to the hypothesis that vertical migration is a defense mechanism against predation, since the larvae use the anoxic layer as a refuge against fish predation.

Demonstrou-se que estes efeitos não se restringiram às comunidade de peixes. A introdução dos predadores Pygocentrus nattereri (piranha-vermelha) e Cichla cf. ocelaris (tucunaré) não só causou uma forte redução no número de espécies de peixes nativos, como também mudanças nos níveis tróficos inferiores. Pouco depois das introduções, a maioria dos lagos começou a mostrar alterações na comunidade fitoplanctônica, tais como o aparecimento da dominância de Cyanophyceae. A comunidade zooplanctônica perdeu diversas espécies e, em alguns casos, houve o desaparecimento de todas as espécies de cladóceros limnéticos, como é o caso da lagoa Carioca. Por outro lado, predadores invertebrados, representados pelos dípteros da família Chaoboridae, floresceram nos lagos com maiores densidades de espécies exóticas de peixes, provavelmente como resultado da "liberação ecológica" causada pela redução da ictiofauna original.     Abstract:

    In order to determine the Chironomidae and Chaoboridae fauna of Kartal Lake, Karagol and Gokceova Pond, samplings were performed in the summer months of 2009-2011. Benthic samples were collected from the littoral and profundal zones of the water bodies by using 180 µ mesh sized hand nets and Ekman Birge grab, respectively. As a result of the taxonomic study, totally 27 species were determined; of them 26 belong to five submailies (Tanypodinae, Prodiamesinae, Diamesinae, Orthocladiinae, Chironominae) of Chironomidae and one to Chaoboridae. The Chironominae subfamily was the dominant group with 16 taxa and was followed by Tanypodinae with 5 taxa. All the determined taxa were firstly recorded from the studied localities. This study aims to add a new one to our country’s mountain lakes studies and to determine common specimens which are unique for this environment characteristics.     Denizli ilinde yer alan Kartal Gölü, Saklıgöl, Karagöl ve Gökçeova Göleti’nin Chironomidae ve Chaoboridae faunasının tespiti amacıyla 2009-2011 yılları yaz mevsimlerinde örnekleme çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Bentik örnekler her gölün litoral ve profundal bölgelerinden 180 µ göz açıklığındaki el kepçeleri ve Ekman-Birge grab ile toplanmıştır. Taksonomik çalışma sonucunda, Chironomidae familyasının 5 altfamilyasına (Tanypodinae, Prodiamesinae, Diamesinae, Orthocladiinae, Chironominae) ait 26, Chaoboridae familyasına ait 1 olmak üzere toplam 27 takson saptanmıştır. Chironominae 16 taksonla baskın olup bu alt familyayı 5 taksonla Tanypodinae izlemektedir. Tespit edilen taksonlar çalışılan lokaliteler için yeni kayıttır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, ülkemizin dağ gölleri ile ilgili çalışmalarına hem bir yenisini daha eklemek hem de kendine özgü bir ortam teşkil eden bu habitatların karakteristik olan ortak türlerini çıkarmaya çalışmaktı

    In order to identify the Chironomidae and Chaoboridae fauna of 11 high altitude lakes located in the Taurus Mountains Range in south-west Anatolia (Turkey), two expeditions were conducted in July 1996 and July 1997. As a result, a total of 19 taxa were determined; of them 17 taxa belong to Chironomidae and two to Chaoboridae. All the recorded taxa are firstly recorded from the study area. The ecological requirements and the distribution of the identified species are presented.
