    Abstract:

    Abstract A 60-day experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of enrichment on fatty acid composition of Moina micrura through lipid emulsions containing highly unsaturated fatty acids and to study the impact of HUFA-enriched Moina on growth, survival and fatty acid composition of post larvae of giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Enrichment was done in three differently prepared emulsions containing sunflower oil, cod liver oil and MaxEPA capsules (commercially available) as sources of lipid. The feeding trial to post larvae was conducted using three replicates of four treatments which were fed with three different types of HUFA-enriched Moina and un-enriched Moina (control). The prepared emulsions were found efficient in enriching Moina by increasing the level of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) up to a maximum of 7.31 ± 0.07% and 2.17 ± 0.03%, respectively. Growth rates of post larvae increased (maximum specific growth rate = 3.60 ± 0.02) with increased amount of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (HUFA) in dietary Moina . Survival increased (maximum survival = 80.00 ± 1.65) as the amount of EPA and DHA increased in the respective dietary Moina. HUFA-enriched Moina showed good effect on the fatty acid composition of M. rosenbergii post larvae with respect to EPA and DHA. EPA percentage in post larvae ranged from 7.82 ± 0.13% (in control) to a maximum of 14.94 ± 0.17% (in MaxEPA group). DHA percentage showed similar trend ranging from 2.45 ± 0.14% (in control) to 7.63 ± 0.19% (in MaxEPA group). The present study indicates that, like in other live feeds, the nutritional quality of Moina in relation to fatty acids can also be increased by enrichment which can influence the growth, survival and fatty acid composition of post larvae of freshwater prawn.

    Abstract:

    The family Moinidae (Crustacea: Cladocera) is intensively studied recently. Last genetic investigations revealed a huge diversity of species in the genus Moina Baird, 1850, comparable with the number of species in the genus Daphnia O.F. Müller, 1776. However, unlike daphniids, the taxonomy of moinids is understudied. Along with new still undescribed species, there are many inadequately described and illegitimately forgotten taxa within Moinidae. Moinids of tropical and subtropical regions remain especially poorly studied, and their features are ignored in recent intergeneric systems. Here we redescribe the morphology of M. wierzejskii Richard, 1895, a peculiar Moina from the New World, and discuss its position within the genus Moina s.l. In the taxonomic scheme, designed for European moinids, M. wierzejskii takes an intermediate position between subgenera ExoMoina Hudec, 2010 and Moina s.str. Similarly to European species belonging to M. (ExoMoina), females of M. wierzejskii have a modified Ilyocryptus-like labrum and an ephippium with two resting eggs. However, the males have no exopod on the thoracic limb I which suggests that this species is closer to the subgenus Moina s.str. The lack of exopod on male thoracic limb I was also marked in another species of the genus from the New World, M. hutchinsoni Brehm, 1937. To date such unusual combination of morphological features is unknown for any moinids from the Old World and Australia. We hope that our observations will stimulate deep phylogenetic studies of peculiar moinids inhabiting the New World.

    Abstract:

    : Species of the genus Moina Baird (Cladocera: Moinidae) often dominate freshwater crustacean communities in temporary water bodies. Several species of Moina are used as food for fish larvae in aquaculture, as bioindicators in toxicological studies, and as common subjects for physiological studies. The aim of this paper is to estimate biodiversity of Moina in northern Eurasia using the standard DNA barcoding approach based on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. We analysed 160 newly obtained and 157 existing COI sequences, and found evidence for 21 phylogroups of Moina, some of which were detected here for the first time. Our study confirmed the opinion that the actual species diversity of cladocerans is several times higher than is presently accepted. Our results also indicated that Moina has the second richest species diversity among the cladoceran genera (with only Daphnia O. F. Mueller having a greater diversity of species). Our study strongly supports division of Moina into two faunistic groups: European-Western Siberian and Eastern Siberian-Far Eastern, with a transitional zone at the Yenisey River basin (Eastern Siberia). Here, we refrain from taxonomic descriptions of new species, as this requires a thorough morphological and taxonomic study for each putative taxon.

    [A new species, Moina dumonti sp. nov. (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda, Moinidae) is found in southern Mexico and Cuba. This species is closely similar to Moina reticulata, because of (1) body rather laterally compressed; (2) brood pouch in large adults slightly inflated, as a result dorsum of valves only slightly convex; (3) presence of an ocellus; (4) no hairs on head and valves; (5) a single egg in the ephippium; (6) gonopores in male positioned dorso-distally. Differences of M. dumonti sp. nov. with other members of the M. reticulata-group, and some other closely similar species, are listed. Comments are given on the morphology of the limbs in moinids. Una nueva especie, Moina dumonti sp. nov. (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda, Moinidae) se encuentra en el sureste de Mexico y Cuba.     A study was carried out to determine the effect of tocopherol acetate along with cod liver oil astaxanthin enriched Moina micrura (MC- control, Ml- tocopherol acetate enriched, M2-tocopherol acetate combined with cod liver oil (CLO) enriched and M3- tocopherol acetate combined with astaxanthin enriched) on growth, survival and fatty acid composition of M. rosenbergii (de Man) larvae (TC- unenriched Moina fed larvae, Tl- tocopherol acetate enriched Moina fed larvae, T2- tocopherol acetate + CLO enriched Moina fed larvae to T3 – tocopherol acetate+ astaxanthin enriched Moina fed larvae). Growth was expressed as the time taken in to the settlement of 95% post larvae. Maximum growth i.e., the lowest time taken to the 95% PL settlement (40 days) and the maximum survival percentage (61%) was observed in both T2 and T3 treatments fed with M2 and M3 Moina respectively. Minimum growth and survival was observed in unenriched Moina fed larvae (TC). In larval treatments T2, (larvae fed with (M2) vitamin E + CLO enriched Moina), showed a higher percentage of EPA, DHA and higher HUFA level than other treatments.

    A study was carried out with three replicates to determine the effects of feeding Moina micrura enriched with astaxanthin alone (M1) or astaxanthin in combination with either vitamin E (M2), vitamin D (M3) or Cod Liver oil (M4) on the growth, survival and fatty acid composition of giant fresh water prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) larvae. Growth rate was expressed as the time taken to the settlement of 95% post larvae. Maximum growth, the lowest time taken to the 95% PL settlement (38.5±0.50 days), was observed in larvae fed with M3 Moina. The highest survival rate (66.0±1.00%) was observed in those fed with M4 Moina and the second highest survival (61.0±1.00%) and growth rates (40.0±0.00 days) were shown with M2 Moina. The minimum values for both growth (42.5±0.50 days) and survival (33.0±1.50%) were observed in the group fed un-enriched Moina. Results also showed that the survival of prawn larvae increased as the quantities of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) increased in the dietary Moina. The highest levels of EPA (5.57±0.21%), DHA (3.50±0.21%) and highest total Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA) (13.87±0.68%) were seen in the Moina fed on astaxanthin and Cod Liver Oil (CLO). The results of the study showed that the nutritive quality of Moina, with respect to important fatty acids, can be increased by enrichment and will influence the growth, survival and the fatty acid composition of fresh water prawn larvae fed on them.
