  • mapping the energy consumption of household refrigerators by varying the refrigerant charge and the expansion restriction
International Journal of Refrigeration-revue Internationale Du Froid, 2014
    Co-Authors: Joel Boeng, Claudio Melo
    Abstract:

In this work the thermodynamic behavior of a household refrigerator was experimentally studied by simultaneously varying the refrigerant charge and the expansion restriction. A special Charging Device was designed and constructed for this purpose comprised of a cylinder, a load cell and two solenoid valves. In addition, the original capillary tube was replaced with a larger-diameter capillary tube and installed in series with a metering valve. The expansion restriction was varied by adjusting the capillary tube–metering valve pair to settings higher and lower than that of the original system. A total of 95 energy consumption measurements were recorded with different combinations of refrigerant charge and expansion restriction. A minimum energy consumption region comprised of several combinations of refrigerant charge and expansion restriction was clearly identified. It was also observed that an improper combination of expansion restriction and refrigerant charge may increase the energy consumption by up to 30%.

  • experimental and numerical modeling of a new tribo electrostatic separation process for granular plastics mixtures
    Particulate Science and Technology, 2015
Co-Authors: A Younes, Adrian Samuila, M Younes, H Sayah, Lucian Dascalescu
    Abstract:

The paper aims at optimizing the operation of a free-fall electrostatic separator equipped with a novel tribo-Charging Device for the processing of granular plastic mixtures. Experiments were performed with a mixture of polycarbonate and polyamide granules (cylinders of 1.5 mm in diameter and 3 mm in length). The samples of granules to be charged were introduced in the gap between the two co-axial cylinders of the tribo-Charging Device, and were put into turbulent motion for 30 s by two oppositely oriented air jets (pressure: 2 bar). Then, the charged particles were left to fall freely between the vertical plate electrodes of an electrostatic separator. A composite experimental design enabled the modeling and optimization of the tribo-electrostatic separation process as a function of the following control factors: applied high voltage, inter-electrode distance, and the inclination angle of the feeding Device. Under optimal conditions, the purity obtained is close to 99%. A numerical model of particle traj...

  • optimisation of belt type electrostatic separation of granular plastic mixtures tribocharged in a propeller type Device
Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2011
Co-Authors: Mohamed Miloudi, Karim Medles, Amar Tilmatine, Mostefa Brahami, Lucian Dascalescu
    Abstract:

Electrostatic separation has already proven its efficiency as a method to recover metals and plastics from granular waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Nevertheless, there still is some work to do regarding the sorting of the various sorts of plastics (ABS, ABS-PC, HIPS, PC) contained in information technology wastes. The main objective of this paper is to optimize the electrode configuration and the operation of a belt-type electrostatic separator employed in conjunction with a new tribo-aerodynamic Charging Device. This application is particularly designed for the recovery of granular materials issued from shredding of computer cases, which contain large quantities of ABS. The following control variables were considered for the optimization: (i) distance between the axis of the high-voltage electrode and the surface of the grounded belt electrode; (ii) angular position of the high-voltage electrode with respect to the horizontal plane; (iii) high-voltage level. Experimental design methodology was employed for determining the optimum value of each variable, using commercial software (MODDE, Umetrics, Sweden).

  • triboCharging of granular plastic mixtures in view of electrostatic separation
IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2005
Co-Authors: Laur Calin, Alexandru Iuga, Adrian Samuila, L Caliap, V. Neamtu, Roman Morar, Lucian Dascalescu
    Abstract:

The output of any electrostatic separation process is strongly dependent on the effectiveness of particle Charging. A novel laboratory-scale fluidized-bed tribo-Charging Device has been described in a previous paper. The aim of the present work is to asses the effectiveness of two materials, aluminium and polypropylene, that could be employed for the manufacturing of the tribo-Charging chamber of that Device. The electrostatic separation experiments designed in this purpose were carried out on three samples of a granular polyethylene/polyvinyl chloride mixture, characterized by different compositions. Aluminium and polypropylene were found to be equally effective for the tribo-electrostatic separation of the 50% PVC, 50% PE sample. For the other two samples (10% PVC, 90% PE; 90% PVC110% PE), the best results were obtained with the polypropylene tribo-Charging chamber.
