1994Co-Authors: Hedda Schulz, Ursula GeorgyAbstract:Neben STN bieten funf weitere Hosts Datenbanken des Chemical Abstracts Service an, jedoch zum Teil unter sehr unterschiedlichen Namen. Von der Struktur des Hostrechners hangt es ab, ob z.B. die Chemical Abstracts nur in einer einzigen Datei recherchierbar sind oder zusatzlich nach Sammelperioden unterteilt sind, wie bei DATA-STAR, DIALOG und ORBIT. Da jeder dieser Hosts seine eigene Kommandosprache entwickelt hat, und das Datenmaterial unterschiedlich aufbereitet wird, kann es vorkommen, das der Rechercheur bei gleicher Fragestellung in demselben Datenbestand, aber bei unterschiedlichen Datenbankanbietern verschiedene Suchergebnisse erhalt. So schreibt STN beispielsweise als einziger Host hinter die Registry Number den systematischen Namen. Recherchiert man nach Polystyrol-Maleinsaureanhydrid-Copolymeren im Freitext, erhalt man bei QUESTEL 1785 Treffer, bei STN aber uber 2630. Andere Hosts nehmen zur Registry Number die Summenformel auf. Eine Uberprufung des Rechercheergebnisses ist uber den Namen bedeutend zuverlassiger und leichter.

Depending on the hosts structures, the Chemical Abstracts may e.g. be searchable in one single file or be divided up into their respective Chemical Abstracts collective periods, as is the case for DATA-STAR, DIALOG and ORBIT. As every host has worked out a retrieval language of its own and has edited the records in its own way, it may happen to a searcher that the same query carried out in the same stock of records but on different hosts, may generate different results. STN e.g. is the only host which places the systematic name after the Registry Number. When searching in the Basic Index for polystyrene maleic anhydride copolymers, QUESTEL will provide 1785 matches, while STN will give over 2630. Other hosts add the molecular formula to the Registry Number. A search result is much easier and much more reliable when using the name.

Man erkannte in der Chemie sehr fruhzeitig — im Vergleich zu anderen Wissenschaften —, welche Bedeutung der zusammenfassenden Darstellung und der Ubersicht von Forschungsergebnissen zukommt, um auch in der Zukunft den Zugriff auf das schon vorhandene Wissen zu behalten. So kam zu der Primarliteratur, d.h. der Originalliteratur, die in Zeitschriften und Monographien den neuesten Stand der Forschung widerspiegelt, die Sekundarliteratur, die Literatur, in denen die Originalarbeiten zusammenfassend dargestellt werden, z.B. in Referatezeitschriften und Handbuchern.

In the field of chemistry, it was realized in the very early days — in comparison with other sciences — how important the summaries and overviews of research results are for maintaining access to existing knowledge now and in the future. Therefore, in addition to the primary literature, i.e. the original publications which reflect the state of research in journals and monographs, the secondary literature came into being, i.e. reference journals and handbooks, which include the summarized presentation of the original publications.

Identification of “Known Unknowns” Utilizing Accurate Mass Data and Chemical Abstracts Service Databases

BrownAbstract:In many cases, an unknown to an investigator is actually known in the Chemical literature. We refer to these types of compounds as “known unknowns.” Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry is a particularly good source of these substances as it contains over 54 million entries. Accurate mass measurements can be used to query the CAS Registry by either molecular formulae or average molecular weights. Searching the database by the web-based version of SciFinder is the preferred approach when molecular formulae are available. However, if a definitive molecular formula cannot be ascertained, searching the database with STN Express by average molecular weights is a viable alternative. The results from either approach are refined by employing the number of associated references or minimal sample history as orthogonal filters. These approaches were shown to be successful in identifying “known unknowns” noted in LC-MS and even GC-MS analyses in our laboratory. In addition, they were demonstrated in the identification of a variety of compounds of interest to others.

IMPROVED INDEXING OF Chemical Abstracts Service POST-TREATED POLYMERS

WilksAbstract:Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) divides post-treated polymers into three types: structurable and registrable; namable but not structurable; and nonregistrable. The indexing of these, especially the second and third types, could be significantly improved. From a searcher's point of view, the records for these types are inconsistent, and many are also incomplete, i.e., they contain little or no structural data. Inevitably, this impairs the ease with which these types can be searched. Suggestions are offered for updating and improving this important area of polymer technology.

The problems of their structure registration by use of the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry System are discussed, and a structure-based nomenclature and representation system for them is presented.
