In Study 1, a sample of 74 5th graders, children who viewed their Relationship with their mother as more secure were significantly more accepted by peers, had more reciprocated friendships, and were less lonely than children who rated the Relationship as less secure. In Study 2, a sample of 5th and 6th graders, 44 same-gender friend pairs were videotaped in conversation and completed friendship questionnaires. Dyads in which both children were securely attached to their mothers were more responsive, were less critical, and reported more companionship than did friend dyads in which one child was securely and the other insecurely attached to his or her mother. The findings demonstrate links between the peer and family systems in middle childhood.

The empirical foundation is qualitative interviews conducted with mothers who live in Sweden. Social constructionist and discursive psychology inspired the article, and according to the analysis three discursive positions were identified. The first position deals with the Child-Mother Relationship and indicates that the child's psychological well-being is dependent on the mother's accessibility. The second discursive position deals with the Child-Mother-woman Relationship. Within this framework, motherhood involves finding contentment in life beyond the child, to be able to convey that well-being to the child. The third discursive position focuses on the mother as a working woman rather than a mother. Mother-child interaction in 60 separated families was videographed in standardized situations at three measurement times (10, 25, and 40 months following separation) and compared with data from a cross-sectional observation of 60 matched complete families. At the first measurement, children were aged 4–10 years, and 57% were male. Trained raters used 12 categories to evaluate the interaction behavior of mothers and children. Multivariate analyses of variance (general linear model) were used to assess relations between mother-child interaction and family structure (separated vs. complete), child’s age, child’s gender, and time of measurement. Results showed that interactions in separated families differed from those in complete families with clear signs of strain in the mothers during early phases following marital separation.
