    Chromolaena odorata (Family: Asteraceae) synonyms as Eupatorium odoratum is a traditional medicinal plant that is widely used for its wound healing property. In particular, the several parts of this herb have been used to treat wounds, burns, and skin infections. Furthermore, it has also been shown to possess anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Its phytochemical components are alkaloids, flavonoids, flavanone, essential oils, phenolics, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids. The other important constituents of this plant are Eupolin, chromomoric acid, quercetagetin, and quercetin, all of which contribute to its remedial properties. Published information on the wound healing property of C. odorata was gathered by the use of different scientific websites such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, and Web of Knowledge to provide an up-to-date review showing its importance.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Chromolaena odorata, Tithonia diversifolia and Lawsonia inermis are medicinal plants used in treating malaria in traditional medicine system. Previous studies however showed that their dichloromethane, methanol (1:1) extracts were more active against Plasmodium parasite than the aqueous extracts. Aim of the study To determine the in vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activity of dichloromethane, methanol (1:1) extracts of Chromolaena odorata, Tithonia diversifolia and Lawsonia inermis in combination and evaluate their safety using acute limit toxicity test. Materials and methods Dichloromethane, methanol (1:1) extracts of Chromolaena odorata, Tithonia diversifolia and Lawsonia inermis leaves were combined at ratios 1:1, 1:3, 3:1, 1:5 and 5:1 using in vitro semi-automated microdilution technique against P. falciparum Chloroquine sensitive (D6) and Chloroquine resistant (W2) strains, with chloroquine and artemisinin as controls. The in vivo antiplasmodial activity of the crude extracts was carried out singly, and in combination at the different combination ratios on Plasmodium berghei Anka infected Swiss albino mice using Peters' 4-day suppressive test. Acute toxicity test was done in mice at 5000 mg/kg. Results The in vitro combination of L . inermis and T. diversifolia (1:1) extracts against P. falciparum showed the highest synergy with IC 50 of 0.43±0.02 µg/mL and 2.55±0.19 µg/mL against D6 and W2 respectively; while the combination of C. odorata with T. diversifolia and L. inermis were antagonistic. A synergy with chemosuppression of 83.6% against P. berghei infected mice was observed in L. inermis and T. diversifolia (1:1) treated animals. In contrast to the in vitro result, combination of C. odorata with T. diversifolia and L . inermis showed some degrees of synergy in vivo . Extracts were not toxic at the concentration tested. Conclusion These findings rationalized the use of these plants in combination as antimalarials in traditional medicine. However, the combination of Chromolaena odorata with other medicinal plants should be used with caution because of its possible antagonistic effect.

    Abstract:

    Hypercholesterolemia is a form of high blood cholesterol that leads to the condition of atherosclerosis, causing stroke and coronary heart disease. Chromolaena odorata L. leaves is one of the medicinal plants that can be used as an alternative antihypercholesterolemic, because it contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannin saponins and steroids. This study aims to determine the antihypercholesterolemic activity and the best dose of ethanol extract of Chromolaena odorata L. leaves, on male Rattus norvegicus L. induced by high  fat diet.      A total of 25 male rats were divided into 5 groups. All groups were  adapted for 7 days and their total cholesterol levels (T0) was measured. In the next 10 days, the rats were conditioned to hypercholesterolemic by giving 10 ml/kg BW of quail yolk. The total cholesterol levels then measured (T10). After that, al the 5 groups received a different treatment for 14 days, group I was given 0,18 mg/200 gr BW of simvastatin, group II was given 0,5% of sodium CMC, group III, IV and V were given the ethanol extract of Chromolaena odorata L. leaves respectively 20 mg/kg BW, 40 mg/kg BW and  60 mg/kg BW and the total cholesterol levels were measured (T24). The method used to measure the total cholesterol levels is CHOD-PAP. The data obtained were analyzed with Kruskal-wallis and Mann whitney test. The statistic result showed an antihypercholesterolemic activity of the three doses of ethanol extract of Chromolaena odorata L. leaves. The best dose in reducing the total cholesterol levels compared to simvastatin is 60 mg/kg BW.   Keywords: Antihypercholesterolemic, ethanol extract of Chromolaena odorata L. leaves, simvastatin, total cholesterol level, CHOD-PAP.Hiperkolesterolemia adalah peningkatan kadar kolesterol dalam darah melebihi kadar normal yang dapat membentuk aterosklerosis sehingga  menyebabkan terjadinya stroke dan penyakit jantung koroner. Daun kirinyuh (Chromolaena odorata L.) merupakan salah satu tanaman obat yang dapat digunakan sebagai alternatif antihiperkolesterolemia, karena memiliki kandungan senyawa alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin tanin dan steroid. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antihiperkolesterolemia dan mengetahui dosis yang paling baik dari ekstrak etanol daun kirinyuh, yang dapat  menunjukkan efek antihiperkolesterolemia pada tikus putih jantan galur wistar yang diinduksi diet lemak tinggi. Sebanyak 25 ekor tikus jantan dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok. Semua kelompok diadaptasi selama 7 hari dan diukur kadar kolesterol totalnya (T0). Selanjutnya selama 10 hari, tikus dibuat hiperkolesterolemia dengan pemberian 10 ml/kgBB kuning telur puyuh. Kadar kolesterol totalnya kemudian diukur   (T10). Setelah itu, setiap kelompok diberikan perlakuan berbeda selama 14 hari yaitu kelompok I diberikan simvastatin 0,18 mg/200gr BB, kelompok II  diberikan Na CMC 0,5%,  kelompok III, IV dan V diberikan ekstrak etanol daun kirinyuh (Chromolaena odorata L.)  masing-masing 20 mg/Kg BB, 40 mg/Kg BB dan 60 mg/Kg BB dan diukur kadar kolesterol totalnya (T24). Pengukuran kadar kolesterol total menggunakan metode CHOD-PAP. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan Kruskal-wallis dan Mann whitney. Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan adanya efek antihiperkolesterolemia pada ketiga dosis ekstrak etanol daun kirinyuh (Chromolaena odorata L.). Dosis yang paling baik dalam menurunkan kadar kolesterol total dibandingkan dengan simvastatin  adalah 60 mg/Kg BB.   Kata kunci: Antihiperkolesterolemia, ektrak etanol daun kirinyuh, simvastatin, kadar kolesterol total,  CHOD-PAP
