Chromosome counts and karyotype analysis of some representatives of genus Cirsium Mill. (Asteraceae) in Turkey

The somatic chromosome number of Cirsium sipyleum O. Schwarz, C. candelabrum Griseb., C. creticum d’Urv. subsp. creticum, C. elodes M. Bieb., C. subinerme Fisch. & C. A. Mey., C. leucopsis DC., C. libanoticum DC. subsp. arachnoideum P. H. Davis & Parris and C. arvense (L.) Scop. were determined as 2n=2x=34. Cirsium pubigerum DC. var. caniforme Petr. and var. paphlagonicum Petr. showed 2n=4x=68 chromosome numbers. The chromosomes of the examined taxa predominantly have median region (m) and rarely median point (M) and submedian region (sm) karyotypes. The chromosome number and morphology of Cirsium sipyleum, C. pubigerum var. paphlagonicum, C. leucopsis and C. libanoticum subsp. arachnoideum are newly reported in the present study.

Karyological studies of 10 Cirsium sect. Epitrachys (Asteraceae) species from Turkey

Epitrachys DC. species distributed in Turkey. The species Cirsium ligulare Boiss., C. sintenisii Freyn, C. boluense P.H.Davis & Parris, C. eriophorum (L.) Scop., C. steirolepis Petr., C. baytopae P.H.Davis & Parris, C. poluninii P.H.Davis & Parris, C. ciliatum (Murray) Moench subsp. szovitsii (K.Koch) Petr., C. ellenbergii Bornm., and C. vulgare (Savi) Ten. have the somatic chromosome number 2n = 2x = 34, whereas C. sintenisii and C. vulgare showed 2n = 4x = 68. The chromosome numbers of C. sintenisii, C. boluense, C. baytopae, C. poluninii, and C. ellenbergii are newly reported here. Karyotype analysis indicated that chromosomes of Cirsium taxa generally have median region (m) and rarely median point (M) and submedian region (sm) karyotypes. The findings for each of the analyzed taxa are compared with the results of previous studies.

Cypsela morphology of Cirsium sect. Cirsium (Asteraceae) taxa in Turkey
Biologia, 2011Co-Authors: Serkan Köstekci, Turan ArabaciAbstract:In this study, the cypsela morphology of 21 (14 species) of the 28 (17 species) Turkish Cirsium Mill. sect. Cirsium (Asteraceae) taxa was examined by stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The shapes of cypselas are oblong, obovate, narrowly obovate and oblanceolate. The taxa were divided into 7 main types according to the results of SEM investigation on cypsela surface characteristics as: scalariform, ribbed, scrobiculate-ribbed, scrobiculate, scrobiculate-reticulate, reticulate and bireticulate. Taxonomic significance of cypsela morphology is discussed. It is shown that cypsela features can be used as distinguishing characteristics in some Cirsium sect. Cirsium species.

Competition between Canada Thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.] and Faba Bean (Vicia faba L.)

MamolosAbstract:This study was conducted to investigate whether density, above-ground biomass and nitrogen (N) concentration of Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. cause serious reductions in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) yield. A 2-year field experiment (1991–93) with four Cirsium densities (0, 4, 16, 64 plants m–2) was carried out. Statistical analysis showed a significant effect of Cirsium density on faba bean yield. Multiple regression analysis showed that the main factors causing faba bean yield losses were the density and above-ground biomass of Cirsium. The results of this study demonstrate that Cirsium competition reduces faba bean yield. The mean faba bean yield losses over the 2 years were 10, 12 and 8% for above-ground biomass, seed and stem, respectively, for a Cirsium density of 16 plants m–2. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde der Einfluss der Pflanzendichte und der oberirdischen Pflanzenmasse einschlieslich der N-Konzentration von Cirsium arvense auf den Ertrag von Ackerbohnen (Vicia faba) untersucht. In einem zweijahrigen Versuch wurden 4 Aussaatdichten von Cirsium arvense (0, 4, 16, 64 Pflanzen m–2) gepruft. Die statistische Analyse detektiert eine deutliche Wirkung der Pflanzendichte von Cirsium arvense auf den Ertrag von Ackerbohnen. Die multiple Regressionsanalyse zeigt, dass die Hauptfaktoren, welche die Ertragsverminderung der Ackerbohnen verursachten, sowohl die Pflanzendichte als auch die oberirdische Pflanzenmasse des Cirsium arvense waren. Cirsium species show disparity in patterns of genetic variation at their range edge despite similar patterns of reproduction and isolation
New Phytologist, 2003Co-Authors: Alistair S Jump, Ian F Woodward, Terry BurkeAbstract:Summary • Genetic variation was assessed across the UK geographical range of Cirsium acaule and Cirsium heterophyllum. A decline in genetic diversity and increase in population divergence approaching the range edge of these species was predicted based on parallel declines in population density and seed production reported seperately. Patterns were compared with UK populations of the widespread Cirsium arvense. • Populations were sampled along a latitudinal transect in the UK and genetic variation assessed using microsatellite markers. • Cirsium acaule shows strong isolation by distance, a significant decline in diversity and an increase in divergence among range-edge populations. Geographical structure is also evident in C. arvense, whereas no such patterns are seen in C. heterophyllum. • There is a major disparity between patterns of genetic variation in C. acaule and C. heterophyllum despite very similar patterns in seed production and population isolation in these species. This suggests it may be misleading to make assumptions about the geographical structure of genetic variation within species based solely on the present-day reproduction and distribution of populations.

New Phytologist, 2003Co-Authors: Alistair S Jump, Ian F WoodwardAbstract:Summary • Patterns in population density and abundance, community composition, seed production and morphological traits were assessed across the UK geographical range of Cirsium acaule , Cirsium heterophyllum and Cirsium arvense based on the expectation that environmental favourability declines from core to periphery of a species range. • These traits were measured in natural populations along a latitudinal transect in the UK and using botanical survey data. •A significant decline in population density and seed production occurs approaching the range edges of C. acaule and C. heterophyllum . There is no latitudinal trend in these traits in the widespread C. arvense and no latitudinal pattern to variation in morphological traits or community composition in any of these species. • Although seed production is reduced at the range edge of C. acaule and C. heterophyllum, peripheral populations of these species may persist through clonal reproduction. Low seed production may interact with reduced availability of favourable habitat to limit range expansion in these species.

Isolation of polymorphic microsatellites in the stemless thistle (Cirsium acaule) and their utility in other Cirsium species

Ian Woodward, Terry BurkeAbstract:The genus Cirsium includes species with both widespread and restricted geographical distributions, several of which are serious weeds. Nine polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from the stemless thistle Cirsium acaule. Eight were polymorphic in C. acaule, six in C. arvense and seven in C. heterophyllum. One locus monomorphic in C. acaule showed polymorphism in C. heterophyllum. The mean number of alleles per locus was 4.1 in C. acaule, 6.2 in C. arvense and 2.9 in C. heterophyllum. These nine loci were also amplified in C. eriophorum and C. vulgare, suggesting that these markers may be of use throughout the genus.
