Clinical reports of pulmonary metastasectomy for colorectal cancer: a Citation Network analysis

However, there have been no controlled studies, randomised or otherwise. We sought to investigate the evidence base that has been used in establishing its status as a standard of care. Methods: Among 51 papers used in a recent systematic review and quantitative synthesis, a Citation Network analysis was performed. A total of 344 publications (the 51 index papers and a further 293 cited in them) constitute the Citation Network. Results: The pattern of Citation is that of a Citation cascade. Specific analyses show the frequent use of historical or landmark papers, which add authority. Papers expressing an opposing viewpoint are rarely cited. Conclusions: The Citation Network for this common and well-established practice provides an example of selective Citation. This pattern of Citation tends to escalate belief in a clinical practice even when it lacks a high-quality evidence base and may create an impression of more authority than is warranted.

An integrated framework for resilience research: a systematic review based on Citation Network analysis

However, not many studies have been taken to synthesize resilience as an interdisciplinary concept being applied across different disciplines and to investigate the common issues among them. This paper explores a conceptual framework for resilience research in an interdisciplinary perspective. In doing so, we first illustrate the academic landscape for resilience research according to the Citation Network of publications. After that, we categorize resilience studies into ten core research domains by their inner Citation relationships. And then, we propose a framework which synthesizes principles of resilience from different research fields embracing key components (behaviors, capacities, influencing factors, interventions, and system dynamics). Based on four theoretical features—conceptions, characteristics, influencing factors, and intervention strategies, we extract key points from each domain. As resilience is a creative theory for sustainability science, this study is expected to contribute to sustainability science by generalizing resilience as an interdisciplinary concept.

Measuring relatedness between communities in a Citation Network

This paper proposes a method of measuring the relatedness among sets of academic papers in order to detect unrelated communities which are not related to target topic. A Citation Network, extracted by given keywords, is divided into communities based on the density of links. We measured and compared four measures of relatedness between two communities in a Citation Network for three large-scale Citation datasets. We used both link and semantic similarities. The topological distance from the center in a Citation Network is a more efficient measure for removing the unrelated communities than the other three measures: the ratio of the number of intercluster links over the all links, the ratio of the number of common terms over all terms, cosine similarity of tf-idf vectors. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

detecting emerging research fronts in regenerative medicine by the Citation Network analysis of scientific publications

We divide Citation Networks into clusters using the topological clustering method, track the positions of papers in each cluster, and visualize Citation Networks with characteristic terms for each cluster. Analyzing the clustering results with the average published year and parent–child relationship of each cluster could be helpful in detecting recent trends. In addition, tracking topological measures, within-cluster degree z and participation coefficient P, enables us to determine whether there are emerging knowledge clusters. Our results show the success of our method in detecting emerging research fronts in regenerative medicine, and these results are confirmed as reasonable by experts. Finally, we predict the future core papers, with the potential of many Citations, via the betweenness centralities in the Citation Network of the research into adult and somatic stem cells.

Citation Network analysis of organic leds

In this paper, we analyzed a Citation Network of OLED papers and used a topological clustering method to investigate the structure of research and to detect emerging research domains. We found that most papers belong to two main clusters: organics and polymers. These two clusters have distinctive differences in subcluster structures and journals where papers are published. Supposing this discrepancy to indicate research progress, organics are in the applied research stage, while polymers are in the basic research stage.

Creating an academic landscape of sustainability science: An analysis of the Citation Network

As sustainability science becomes a distinctive research field, it is important to define sustainability clearly and grasp the entire structure, current status, and future directions of sustainability science. This paper provides an academic landscape of sustainability science by analyzing the Citation Network of papers published in academic journals. A topological clustering method is used to detect the subdomains of sustainability science. Results show the existence of 15 main research clusters: Agriculture, Fisheries, Ecological Economics, Forestry (agroforestry), Forestry (tropical rain forest), Business, Tourism, Water, Forestry (biodiversity), Urban Planning, Rural Sociology, Energy, Health, Soil, and Wildlife. Agriculture, Fisheries, Ecological Economics, and Forestry (agroforestry) clusters are predominant among these. The Energy cluster is currently developing, as indicated by the age of papers in the cluster, although it has a relatively small number of papers. These results are compared with those obtained by natural language processing. Education, Biotechnology, Medical, Livestock, Climate Change, Welfare, and Livelihood clusters are uniquely extracted by natural language processing, because they are common topics across clusters in the Citation Network.

Citation Network analysis of research on sport officials: a lack of interconnectivity.

While investigations on sport officials have proliferated in recent years, many queries remain unanswered. Through Citation analysis, we investigated how information is shared amongst sport official researchers. We focused on a particular group of sport officials that interact with athletes during competition, or what MacMahon and Plessner (2008) called “sport interactors”. We searched 3 databases for articles published before 2012 that centred on psycho-social and perceptual-cognitive aspects of officiating. Three groups of research included personality, stress, and decision-making. The resultant 115-article Network revealed that little connectivity within and between groups; that is, articles did not frequently cite other articles in the Citation Network (an average of 4.25 Citations per article, with the median value being 2.0). The 12 most cited articles (appearing in 9 journals) were mainly original papers and focused on male soccer referees’ decision-making; however, the publication dates varied from 1990 to 2004. We discuss the results and implications this paper has on sport officials research, particularly related to sport officials being used as a context to study general expertise, the lack of a true sport official journal, and the similarities and differences of the most cited articles

Design A Citation Network analysis. Methods We began by searching the term “sport and burnout” in SportDiscus, Physical Education Index, and PsycINFO. From the returned search, we then selected and analyzed all peer-reviewed English articles that were published before 2012. This allowed us to create a Network of inter-Citations. Results Our search yielded 102 articles, of which there were 11 reviews (11%), 13 qualitative articles (13%), 76 quantitative articles (75%), and two mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) articles (2%). The 11 most cited articles were published between 1984 and 2006, appearing in 5 journals (7 of them in the same journal). Merely 2 of the most cited articles investigated coach burnout. Top-cited articles typically conducted original research using male and female individual sport athletes and were published by North American authors, with two recent exceptions. The most cited article, and also most influential burnout model, was Smith's (1986) cognitive-affective stress model. Conclusions The findings show that following an initial focus on coach burnout, more recent studies examine athletes. In this paper we have identified some strengths amongst the most cited papers, including a wide range of publication dates and a focus on both male and female athletes; however, there were also limitations such as a scarcity of articles investigating team sport athletes.

The present study examined the influential texts (articles, books, and chapters) providing the basis for TB in sport using two novel, yet related, research synthesis approaches; namely, Citation Network analysis and Citation path analysis. Results revealed how a focus on cohesion helped shape present conceptualizations and research of TB in sport. The findings also serve to highlight alternative perspectives and frameworks (i.e., other than those with a focus on cohesion) that may have been overlooked or ignored by group dynamics researchers interested in TB in sport.

The purpose of the present study was to synthesize and evaluate the interconnectedness of the English-language literature that serve as the foundation for athlete developmental models in sport using a novel research synthesis approach to sport psychology –Citation Network analysis. Unlike other research synthesis techniques, Citation Network analysis reveals the cognitive structure and interconnectedness of a field of study [Moore, S., Shiell, P., Hawe, P., & Haines, V.A. (2005). The privileging of communicatarian ideas: Citation practices and the translation of social capital into public health research. American Journal of Public Health, 95 , 1330–1337.]. Methods Based upon seven criteria, seven articles representing models of athlete development in sport were selected as the base of the article population. All peer-reviewed, English journal articles that cite at least one of these seven model articles were compiled, resulting in a total population of 75 articles. From this article population a Network of inter-Citations was created. Results and conclusions Analysis of the total Network revealed the presence of two separate factions working in relative isolation from one another. Articles in the first faction were centered around the Stambulova [(1994). Developmental sports career investigations in Russia: a post-perestroika analysis. Taking stock of positive youth development research in sport: A Citation Network analysis

BrunerAbstract:Although sport has been established as a vehicle for positive youth development (PYD), an overview of this broad literature base reveals a range of conceptual and theoretical orientations guiding the research. In order to synthesize the sport-based PYD literature, a Citation Network analysis was conducted to identify the most prominent publications in the area and to evaluate the interconnectedness of the literature based on Citations. Peer-reviewed quantitative and qualitative journal articles (N = 197; search finalized June 2018) were included if they (a) used PYD research to establish the conceptual context for the study, (b) included organized and adult-supervised competitive sport, recreational sport, or other settings that included sport activities (e.g., summer camps, school/after-school programs), and (c) reported at least one outcome measure relevant to PYD. Articles within this list then were coded based on whether they cited (1) or did not cite (0) one another, and Network metrics were summarized using UCINET software. The Network structure was visualized and a modularity algorithm detected four research communities within the PYD literature. These communities, including their total Citation Network coverage and most cited article were: life skill development (31.9%, 324 total Citations; Holt et al., 2008, 29 Citations), developmental/sport experiences (27.6%, 246 total Citations; Larson et al., 2006; 44 Citations), PYD programming (25.5%, 152 total Citations; Brunelle et al., 2007; 27 Citations), and social environment (15.0%, 110 total Citations; Fraser-Thomas & Cote, 2009; 19 Citations). Implications of these findings are addressed including the need for common conceptual ground in PYD research.

Mapping the World of Coaching Science: A Citation Network Analysis

BrunerAbstract:The purpose of the present study was to use Citation Network analysis to identify key publications and influential researchers in coaching science. A Citation Network analysis was conducted on references of English-language peer-reviewed coaching research articles published in 2007 and 2008 (n=141 articles; 3,891 references). Publications were coded for type (e.g., conceptual, empirical) and topic (e.g., efficacy, coach development). The structure of the field was revealed through the creation of a co-authorship Network. Results show that coaching science is highly influenced by a small set of key publications and researchers. The results provide a unique overview of the field and influential authors, and complement recent overviews of coaching science (Gilbert & Trudel, 2004; Lyle & Cushion, 2010; McCullick et al., 2009).
