Histological Changes in the Liver of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Fed Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) Seedmeal Diets

Abdulsalami, O J BankojoAbstract:The nutritive potential of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) seedmeal as dietary protein source in the diet of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were evaluated in a 56 day feeding trial using histological changes in the liver as an index of assessment. 150 Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings (6.12±0.05g) were acclimatized for a week, weighed and allotted into five dietary treatments; containing 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% Citrullus lanatus seedmeal replacement levels for soybean meal respectively. The diets were isonitrogenous and isolipidic. Each treatment was replicated three times with ten fish per replicate. Fish were fed 5% body weight on two equal proportions per day. The result from the study indicated that there was marked vacuolation of hepatocytes of the liver of the fish exposed to different dietary treatments after the experiment which is not dietary treatment related. Okemakin, Abdusalami, O F AdekunleAbstract:The haematological and biochemical profile of blood of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed on diets containing watermelon ( Citrullus lanatus ) seedmeal were evaluated using packed cell volume (PCV); haemoglobin content (Hb), white blood cell count (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), blood glucose, cholesterol, total protein, albumin and globulin as indices. 150 tilapia fingerlings of average weight 6.12±0.05g were acclimatized for a week, weighed and allotted into five dietary treatments; DT1, DT2, DT3, DT4 and DT5 containing 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% Citrullus lanatus replacement levels with soybean meal, respectively. HAEMATOLOGICAL CHANGES IN CATFISH (Clarias gariepinus) FED DIETS CONTAINING WATER MELON SEEDMEAL (Citrullus lanatus)

AjasinAbstract:The effects of replacing soya bean meal with watermelon seed meal (Citrullus lanatus) on the haematology of catfish (Clarias gariepinus) was evaluated. 150 juveniles catfish were acclimatized for a week, weighed and allotted into five dietary treatments; D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5 containing 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% Citrullus lanatus respectively. The diets were isonitrogenous and isolipidic. Each treatment was replicated three times with ten fish per replicate. Fish were fed 5% body weight on two equal proportions per day. The result from the study indicated that the there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the haematological parameters of fish fed the various dietary treatments. The PCV of fish fed diet containing up to 30% Citrullus lanatus seedmeal were not significantly different (p>0.05) from control. Similarly there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the PCV of fish fed D4 and D5.
