    Abstract:

    Abstract The objective of the study was to prepare noodles using Citrus Maxima fruit segments suiting diabetic populations. The texture value decreased from 138 to 116 g force (fresh segments) and it increased for dry segments supplemented noodles (122 to 162 g force). Noodles supplemented with 30% fresh and 5% dry fruit segments were sensorial acceptable. Naringin and other bioactive compounds such as phenolics, flavonoids and carotenoids were retained better in uncooked noodles in comparison to the cooked noodles. The glycemic index of the formulated noodles falls within the medium glycemic index (GI) from 66.23% to 58.21% with resistance starch ranging from 3.47% to 8.89% compared to control. Thus pomelo segments in noodles had effectively helped in lowering the GI. Hence, the supplementation of pomelo fruit segments can be used as an ingredient to develop value added product suiting normal and diabetic population.

    The aim of this study was to identify the bioactive compound of Citrus Maxima fruit that targets the enzymes responsible for hyperglycaemia. Preliminary in vitro screening of extracts of fruit parts revealed that juicy segments (ethanol, methanol and aqueous) showed the highest inhibition towards the carbohydrate- hydrolysing enzymes. Further, juicy segment extracts were subjected to preparative HPLC for separation and isolation of compounds. After a series of separations, in vitro analysis and characterization, naringin was identified to be the bioactive compound that is responsible for inhibiting carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzyme activities. Further application, such as developing food formulations from C. Maxima will benefit diabetic populations.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the starch digestibility and predicted glycemic index in breads incorporated with pomelo fruit (Citrus Maxima) segments. Volume of the white and brown breads supplemented with pomelo fresh segments increased, while the crumb firmness decreased. Bread with 20% fresh and 5% dry pomelo segments were sensorily acceptable. Bioactive components such as phenolics, flavonoids, naringin and carotenoids were retained to a greater extent in bread containing dry pomelo segments. The pomelo incorporated bread had higher levels of resistant starch fractions (3.87-10.96%) with low predicted glycemic index (62.97-53.13%), despite their higher total starch (69.87-75.47%) content compared to control bread. Thus pomelo segments in the product formulations lowered the glycemic index probably by inhibiting carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzyme activity which could be attributed to naringin. Hence fortified bread prepared from pomelo fruit segment is recommended to gain nutritional value and to decrease the risk of diabetes.

    Context. The plant Citrus Maxima Merr. (Rutaceae), commonly known as shaddock or pomelo is indigenous to tropical parts of Asia. The objective of present study is to evaluate the methanol extract of Citrus Maxima leaves for its antitumor activity against Ehrlich's Ascites Carcinoma cell in Swiss albino mice. Experimental design. The antitumor activity of methanol extract of Citrus Maxima leaves (MECM) was evaluated against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cell line in Swiss albino mice. 2 × 106 cells were inoculated in different groups of animals. MECM (200 and 400 mg/kg BW i.p.) was administered for nine consecutive days. On day 10th half the animals of different groups were sacrificed for determination of tumor and haematological parameters and the rest half were kept with sufficient food and water ad libitum for determination of increase in life span. Result and Discussions. Oral administration of the extract at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg significantly decreased tumor parameters such as tumor volume, viable tumor cell count and increased body weight, hematological parameters and life span in respect of the EAC control mice. Conclusion. Experimental design exhibits significant antitumor activity of the extract (MECM) in a dose dependant manner.

    Pomelo or shaddock (Citrus Maxima) is a widely cultivated and consumed Citrus variety in India. In the present study, the methanol extract of Citrus Maxima (J. Burm.) Merr. leaves (MECM) was evaluated for its in vivo antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity against paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar albino rats. The results of the present study established the hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of MECM at the dose levels of 200 and 400 mg kg-1 body weight and showed dose dependent decrease in the bilirubin, total protein and serum hepatic enzyme levels in comparison to the paracetamol control rats. By MECM treatment, the hepatic TBARS levels were decreased and GSH and catalase levels were increased as comparable to the silymarin treated group (25 mg kg-1 b.w.) which served as reference. The data were supplemented by histopathological studies of the rat liver sections.
