  • an overview of pumice stone as a cementitious material the best manual for Civil Engineer
    Silicon, 2021
    Co-Authors: Alaa M. Rashad
    Abstract:

Pumice stone is a natural sponge-like lightweight aggregate formed during the rapid cooling and solidification of molten lava. After suitable preparation, it can be used as an aggregate to produce lightweight concrete or as a cementitious material to produce blended cement or geopolymer. This article focused on the influence of pumice powder (PP) on fresh properties and hardened properties of conventional cementitious materials and geopolymers. Additionally, different modification methods carried out to modify some properties of conventional cementitious materials containing PP have been included. This review showed that the incorporation of PP in the traditional cement matrix has some benefits such as increasing thermal and acoustic insulation, increasing fire resistance, increasing abrasion resistance, decreasing unit weight, decreasing hydration heat, decreasing drying shrinkage, decreasing autoclave expansion, increasing sulfate resistance, increasing seawater resistance, increasing acid resistance, increasing electrical resistivity, decreasing alkali silica reaction (ASR) expansion, decreasing porosity, water absorption and permeability. On the other hand, it has a negative effect on workability, mechanical strength and increasing carbonation rate. This review also confirmed that PP has a promising future in the field of alkali-activated and geopolymer materials.

  • effect of steel fibers on geopolymer properties the best synopsis for Civil Engineer
    Construction and Building Materials, 2020
    Co-Authors: Alaa M. Rashad
    Abstract:

Abstract Recently, the introduction of steel fibers to geopolymers as a reinforcement has developed and increased owing to the rapid development of geopolymers. Despite geopolymers exhibit potential properties such as low energy consumption and carbon footprint, flame resistance, fire resistance, valuable compressive strength and good durability, they suffer from low flexural and tensile strengths. To solve these problems, steel fibers are added to geopolymers to improve their ductility, toughness, flexural and tensile strengths. The present paper targets to summarize the earlier studies carried out on the influence of steel fibers on the fresh and the hardened properties of the geopolymers. This review confirmed that the incorporations of steel fibers into geopolymers have a positive effect on flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, ductility, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, toughness, chemical resistance, shrinkage, sorptivity, water absorption, permeability, water penetration depth, load carrying capacity, crack propagation and post-cracking. In addition, in most cases compressive strength increased. On the other hand, they have a negative effect on porosity and workability.

    Construction and Building Materials, 2016
    Co-Authors: Alaa M. Rashad
    Abstract:

Perlite is a common name for amorphous volcanic silicate/alumina rock which can be expanded when rapidly heated at 900-1200 °C. Utilization occasions of perlite have made the product adjustable to abundant applications in construction, petrochemical industries, industrial, chemical and horticultural. In construction, expanded perlite (EP) can be used as a part of cement or aggregate in traditional cementitious materials or as a source material for geopolymers. EP in construction deals good thermal and sound insulation, good fire resistance and low density. Subsequently perlite seems to be a very important material. In this paper, the author reviews the effect of EP which used as a part of building material on fresh properties and hardened properties of traditional cementitious materials, geopolymers as well as other binders. Furthermore, different additives which used to improve some properties of EP matrices have been reviewed.

  • a brief on high volume class f fly ash as cement replacement a guide for Civil Engineer
International journal of sustainable built environment, 2015
    Co-Authors: Alaa M. Rashad
    Abstract:

Abstract Disposal of fly ash (FA) resulting from the combustion of coal-fired electric power stations is one of the major environmental challenges. This challenge continues to increase with increasing the amount of FA and decreasing the capacity of landfill space. Therefore, studies have been carried out to re-use high-volumes of fly ash (HVFA) as cement replacement in building materials. This paper presents an overview of the previous studies carried out on the use of high volume Class F FA as a partial replacement of cement in traditional paste/mortar/concrete mixtures based on Portland cement (PC). Fresh properties, mechanical properties, abrasion resistance, thermal properties, drying shrinkage, porosity, water absorption, sorptivity, chemical resistance, carbonation resistance and electrical resistivity of paste/mortar/concrete mixtures containing HVFA (⩾45%) as cement replacement have been reviewed. Furthermore, additives used to improve some properties of HVFA system have been reviewed.

  • impact of international accreditation in the recognition of academic degrees in the domestic and foreign labor market case study Civil Engineering program
    Innovaciones de Negocios, 2017
Co-Authors: Jose Nicolas Barragan Codina, Daniel Bortoni Herrera
    Abstract:

Abstract: In a globalized era it is not enough to have a professional qualification to ensure economic and professional success. The academic background of professionals must be adequate to face challenges and solve problems of a globalized and dynamic world. Civil Engineers face many complications when seeking an international career. There are many differences within the profession globally such as: resources, workforce, climate, language, culture, philosophies, regulations, etc. which raise the entry barriers to fully practice as a Civil Engineer. The International accreditations play a major role as the first evidence of the Civil Engineer technical proficiency. These assure the quality of the higher education curricula and add value to the human capital on an international context. Despite the fact that many Mexican Universities have academic programs which have international accreditations, Civil Engineer graduates cannot easily work across borders. This paper describes the impact that international accreditation has for Civil Engineers when seeking an international career. • new Civil Engineer introducing undergraduate Civil Engineers to construction technology
    Journal of Engineering Education, 2014
    Co-Authors: Michael Murray, Stuart Tennant
    Abstract:

Undergraduate (UG) Civil Engineering students should graduate from university with knowledge that links their computational competence in structural Engineering and mechanics to construction technology principles, processes and practice. However, there appears to be a paucity of evidence to suggest that UG Civil Engineering students receive sufficient instruction in construction technology throughout their degree studies. This paper presents evidence from a study employing the weekly New Civil Engineer (NCE) publication as a vehicle for introducing construction technology to first year students. The results reveal that students found this publication interesting and inspirational. Whilst this innovative approach to teaching construction technology would be best ‘blended’ throughout the UG course, its introduction, application and success arguably requires a multi-disciplinary and carefully ‘Engineered’ approach. Given the diversity of academic staff, individual motivation and the professional demands of a contemporary mass higher education system, the prospective benefits from ‘blended’ learning in UG construction technology studies will in all probability remain unfulfilled.

  • bidding composites to the general contractor one lost opportunity for composites on a Civil Engineer s project
    1996
    Co-Authors: W Kreysler, R L Mogel
    Abstract:

Power utilities build flumes, typically made of cast in place concrete, to collect and direct water toward hydroelectric generators. The opportunity for using RP came when the utility was considering methods to smooth and decrease erosion on the interior surface of the flumes. Algae accumulates on the rough and eroded interior surface of the concrete flumes slowing the speed of the water which, in turn, decreases power output. RP was determined by the utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG and E) to be a viable solution. One flume was selected by the utility to test this theory that lining the flume with RP would improve efficiency. Requests for proposals were delivered to licensed Civil Engineering contractors with the bonding capacity necessary to meet PG and E requirements. Five general contractors were eventually qualified by the utility as bidders. Bid documents were prepared to solicit labor and materials for covering the first 4,000 linear feet of a 27 mile-long flume. The allowed production time for this portion of the flume was 3 weeks. In the end, no one was successful in bidding for the RP flume liner. The utility rejected all bids as they all either exceeded the allowed budgetmore » or were submitted by under-qualified contractors. Opportunities for RP remain, but industry procedures and processes must meet the needs of the construction industry and must comply with their normal operating procedures before the market can reach its full potential.« less
