paraneoplastic Clostridium septicum infection of a total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty, 2011Co-Authors: Colin D Burnell, Thomas R Turgeon, David R Hedden, Eric BohmAbstract:Abstract We describe a case of a well-functioning total knee arthroplasty acutely infected with Clostridium septicum . This is the first reported infection of a prosthetic joint with this organism. A search for the source of this infection uncovered a colonic malignancy. This organism is highly associated with gastrointestinal malignancy, and appropriate investigation should be carried out when it is discovered. The importance of full anaerobic bacterial identification by the microbiology laboratory is underscored by this case.

Clostridium septicum growth from a total knee arthroplasty associated with intestinal malignancy a case report
BMC Infectious Diseases, 2012Co-Authors: Demetri M Economedes, Jerome Santoro, Carl A DeirmengianAbstract:Background Previous reports of infection with Clostridium septicum have identified an unexpected association with concurrent malignancy. The reported rate of associated malignancy has been found to be as high as 81 percent. The purpose of this case report was to present a case of a total knee arthroplasty infected with C. septicum and the subsequent finding of an occult colonic malignancy.

a simple electroelution method for rapid protein purification isolation and antibody production of alpha toxin from Clostridium septicum
PeerJ, 2017Co-Authors: Lorena Vazqueziglesias, Borja Estefanellucha, Leticia Barciacastro, Maria Paez De La Cadena, Paula Alvarezchaver, Daniel Ayudevazquez, Francisco Javier RodriguezberrocalAbstract:Clostridium septicum produces a number of diseases in human and farm animals which, in most of the cases, are fatal without clinical intervention. Alpha toxin is an important agent and the unique lethal virulent factor produced by Clostridium septicum. This toxin is haemolytic, highly lethal and necrotizing activities but is being used as an antigen to develop animal vaccines. The aim of this study was to isolate the alpha toxin of Clostridium septicum and produce highly specific antibodies against it. In this work, we have developed a simple and efficient method for alpha toxin purification, based on electroelution that can be used as a time-saving method for purifying proteins. This technique avoids contamination by other proteins that could appear during other protein purification techniques such chromatography. The highly purified toxin was used to produce polyclonal antibodies. The specificity of the antibodies was tested by western blot and these antibodies can be applied to the quantitative determination of alpha toxin by slot blot.
