    Abstract:

    Context-aware applications are seen as one of the "killer" application categories of the future, due to their ability to offer personalized services by adapting their behavior according to the users' needs and changing situation. Context-aware applications rely in their operation on a complex set of functionalities (i.e. context-awareness substrates). In order to facilitate the development of novel context-aware applications and achieve efficiency in terms of resource utilization, there is a need for a unified, openly-accessible, scalable context management platform that enables the dynamic discovery, composition, and reuse of context-awareness substrates by various context-aware applications. The lack of such platform is a major impediment to the fast and resource efficient development of context aware applications. In this paper, we propose a novel virtualized context management platform in the Cloud, in which a shared pool of virtualized context-awareness substrates can be offered by different providers, and leased on demand. Those substrates can be dynamically discovered and composed to enable fast and cost-effective development of a variety of context-aware applications. The proposed platform relies on a new Business Model which introduces the sensors substrate provider and the broker as new roles in the traditional Cloud Business Model. A detailed software architecture and preliminary prototype implementation are also presented.

    Abstract:

    The objective of this paper is to identify the current state of Cloud Business Model adoption in Indonesia. We use an exploratory case study approach, since the number of publications on this topic is limited. We conducted 12 case studies with Cloud service providers in Indonesia, which consisted of interviews and document studies. The analysis of our interviews revealed that the Cloud Business Model adoption in Indonesia is mainly initiated by the local IT services providers. We also found that market demand was the main triggering factor for adopting the Cloud Business Model. One of the key benefits that was mentioned, is the positive trend in revenue gains. The most encountered challenge for Indonesian Cloud service providers is the low speed of internet connection in rural areas. The findings revealed from our study can serve as reference for IT practitioners and researchers who look for information and understanding on Cloud Business Model adoption in Indonesia.

    Abstract:

    Interactive Voice Response (IVR) applications (e.g. automated attendant) are ubiquitous nowadays. Cloud computing is an emerging multi-faceted paradigm (Infrastructure as a Service — IaaS, Platform as a Service — PaaS, and Software as a Service — SaaS) with several inherent benefits (e.g. resource efficiency). Very few, if any, IVR applications are offered today in Cloud settings despite all the potential benefits. This paper introduces a novel architecture for a virtualized IVR infrastructure and demonstrates its potential with a case study. The architecture proposes IVR substrates that are virtualized, composed, and assembled on the fly to build IVR applications. It relies on a Business Model which introduces the IVR substrate provider as a new role in the Cloud Business Model. In the case study, which includes a prototype, IVR service providers develop and manage IVR applications using a simplified platform that adds a level of abstraction to the substrates available in the virtualized infrastructure. The applications are offered as SaaS to end-users.

    Service Discovery mechanisms are gaining interest in the last years due to the growing bulk of information available, especially to distributed computing infrastructures like Grids and Clouds. However a vast number of characteristics of these implementations exist, each one suitable for a number of purposes. The aim of this chapter is to extract a taxonomy of these characteristics found in modern Service Discovery systems and produce a categorization of existing implementations in a grouped and comparative way, based on these features. Furthermore, the mapping of these characteristics to the Cloud Business Model is produced, in order to assist in selecting the suitable solutions for each provider based on his/her location in the value chain or identify gaps in the existing implementations.

  • Business Model renewal and ambidexterity: Structural alteration and strategy formation process during transition to a Cloud Business Model

    This paper presents the findings of a longitudinal study of a large corporation's transition to a new Business Model in the face of a major transformation in the ICT industry brought about by Cloud computing. We build theory on the process of Business Model innovation through a qualitative study that investigates how an established firm organizes for an emerging Business Model. Contrary to previous findings that presented spatial separation as the optimal structural approach for dealing with two competing Business Models, our findings indicate a need for recursive iterations between different modes of separated and integrated structures in line with the emergent nature of strategic intent toward the new Business Models. Our analyses reveal strategy formation to be a collective experimental learning process revolving around a number of alternative strategic intentions ranging from incremental evolution and transformation to complete replacement of the existing Business Model. Given the fundamental differences in the nature and requirements of those alternative intents, iterations between different structural modes and differing combinations proved to be crucial in enabling the organization to make transition to the new Business Model.
