2009Co-Authors: A Fuster, M J De GalindezAbstract:There is an increasing interest in the production of Cochineal for the extraction of carminic acid in regions of Argentina which are suitable for raising the insect. The purpose of this paper is to determine yield values and the optimal number of mother females in nests to be used in induced infestations of Dactylopius coccus Costa raised under cover, in the climatic conditions of the Semiarid Chaco Region. Production is expressed in terms of number and fresh weight of females insects obtained per cladode. Yield values fall within those reported in the literature for similar conditions. 15 females per nest appears to be the best density for Cochineal production. A greater number of mother females per cladode was found in the summer production.

Four basic cell types were found in the two pseudococcids and five in the Cochineal scale. The cell types common to all species included: prohaemocytes, oenocytoids, typical granulocytes and plasmatocytes. In addition, a modified granulocyte (poly-glyco-based granulocyte) was found to be specific to the Cochineal scale and this produced rough endoplasmic reticulum derived granules that may be the source for the synthesis of carminic acid. The natural silver complex from pomegranate peel extract resulted in nano-sized structures through solution-phase method, but this method was not efficient for Cochineal dye-silver precursor and the as-formed products were highly agglomerated. Therefore, an alternative facile solid-state approach was investigated as for both natural precursors and the results showed successful production of well-dispersed nanoparticles with narrow size distribution for Cochineal dye-silver precursor. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Electronics, 2016Co-Authors: Mojgan Goudarzi, Zabihullah Zarghami, Masoud SalavatiniasariAbstract:Herein, silver–alumina nanocomposites have been synthesized via simple, novel, solvent-free and template-less solid-state thermal decomposition using Cochineal powder as novel starting reagent for the first time. AgNO3 and Al(OH)3 were utilized as silver and aluminum source, respectively. The prepared Ag–Al2O3 nanostructures were characterized extensively by means of X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Effect of reaction time, temperature and Cochineal powder on morphology and particle size of prepared products was investigated. The results exhibited that in presence of Cochineal powder, as-prepared nanostructures show very high degree of purity and uniformity. In other words, because of remarkable antioxidant properties of Cochineal, it prevents silver nanoparticles from sintering and oxidizing. The silver–alumina nanocomposite were evaluated as photocatalyst for the Rhodamine B degradation using visible light irradiation and showed significant photocatalytic efficiency.

Natural dyes extraction from Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus). New extraction methods

Esparza, Elena IbáñezAbstract:Abstract Carminic acid is a natural colourant that can be obtained from the dried bodies of females of the Dactylopius coccus Costa insect species (Cochineal). Carminic acid is the main pigment that can be extracted from the Cochineal insect. Its main use is with cosmetics, foods and pharmaceutical applications and it can also have textile and plastic applications. The traditional extraction methods employed to obtain this dye involve several drawbacks, e.g. high extraction time, low selectivity and low extraction efficiency. Moreover, these conventional techniques need toxic solvents. In this work, new extraction methods have been studied in order to avoid the disadvantages mentioned above. Pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) techniques provide high selectivity and short extraction times.
