Access Point Recruitment in a Vehicular Cognitive Capability Harvesting Network: How Much Data Can Be Uploaded?
IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2018Co-Authors: Haichuan Ding, Chi Zhang, Beatriz Lorenzo, Yuguang FangAbstract:To effectively deal with exploding traffic from emerging Internet of things (IoT) and smart cities applications, we have recently designed a vehicular Cognitive Capability harvesting network architecture where a virtual service provider (VSP) coordinates vehicles equipped with powerful communication devices, namely Cognitive radio routers, to help various end devices upload their data to data networks via deployed or recruited roadside access points (APs). To make the AP recruitment cost-effective, it is necessary for the VSP to learn what each AP can offer. Thus, in this paper, by modeling the vehicle arrival process as a Poisson process, we analyze the maximum long-term upload throughput achieved with an AP. Due to the contention inside the coverage of the AP, the amount of data uploaded by each vehicle is correlated, which makes our analysis difficult. To address this challenge, we reformulate the considered problem as a renewal reward process, which allows us to derive the closed-form expression for the maximum long-term upload throughput. We validate our analytical results via extensive simulations, which can offer us useful insights on AP recruitment.

Smart Cities on Wheels: A Newly Emerging Vehicular Cognitive Capability Harvesting Network for Data Transportation

In this article, we propose a solution based on the premise that vehicles are equipped with CR routers, specially designed powerful devices with agile communication interfaces, rich computing resources, and abundant storage space. To fully exploit the capabilities of such vehicles, we propose a V-CCHN architecture where CR router enabled vehicles are employed to connect end devices to the V-CCHN and transport data to intended locations via storage of on-board CR routers and spectrum resources harvested from various systems. Considering the abundant storage of on-board CR routers and a wide range of under-utilized spectrum, the V-CCHN is expected to effectively transport substantial amounts of data between end devices and data networks, which offers an effective solution to handling the explosive wireless data traffic and well complements existing telecommunications networks.

Conflict is dynamic in nature, and its effect on team performance varies during software development lifecycle. Based on information processing theory and team cognition theory, this study proposes Cognitive Capability as an important moderator on the task conflict – team performance relationship. A longitudinal study was conducted in 70 student software development teams and multi-level model of change was applied to analyze the data collected at different time points. Results supported the proposition that while task conflict interferes with team performance, its detrimental effects get more sever over time; and Cognitive Capability, which develops along with the maturing of team cognition as team members work together on the focal project, helps restrain and convert the undesirable effect of task conflict on team performance toward beneficial and constructive. Demonstration of hybrid overlay/underlay waveform generator with spectrally compliant Cognitive Capability via SD-SMSE framework

In our previous work, an overlay CR has been demonstrated via a spectrally modulated spectrally encoded (SMSE) framework to autonomously stitch unused spectrum fragments and transmit over non-contiguous frequency bands in a dynamically changing environment. Such an overlay CR can coexist with primary users (PUs) and other secondary users (SUs) without harmful interference by turning off the subcarriers which are shared with active PUs and other SUs on the band. To further enhance spectrum usage, we extend it and implement a hybrid overlay/underlay waveform generator via a soft-decision SMSE (SD-SMSE) framework, where both unused and under-used spectra are explored. Specifically, the hybrid overlay/underlay waveform can transmit over not only unused spectrum bands, but also under-used spectrum and share the spectrum with active PUs and other SUs by underlaying them, since PU/SU has certain Capability to tolerant interference as long as the underlay transmission power is lower than such a interference tolerance level (ITL). On the other hand, if any active SU on the band is not a friendly transmission, the hybrid waveform can easily increase the transmission power underlaying with the SU much higher than the ITL to fully disrupt the unfriendly transmission. Moreover, the proposed platform is capable of generating conventional single-carrier waveform with different modulation schemes and radio frequency (RF) parameters. Therefore, the platform implements many desirable functions, realizes coexistence with PUs and other SUs or unfriendly transmission disruption, and maximizes the spectrum efficiency, as well as provides a testbed for Cognitive radio and Cognitive RF research and development.

Research in Learning Technology, 2008Co-Authors: Maggi SavinbadenAbstract:Learning in immersive virtual worlds (simulations and virtual worlds such as Second Life) could become a central learning approach in many curricula, but the socio-political impact of virtual world learning on higher education remains under-researched. Much of the recent research into learning in immersive virtual worlds centres around games and gaming and is largely underpinned by Cognitive learning theories that focus on linearity, problem-solving and the importance of attaining the ‘right answer’ or game plan. Most research to date has been undertaken into students’ experiences of virtual learning environments, discussion forums and perspectives about what and how online learning has been implemented. This article reviews the literature relating to learning in immersive virtual worlds, and suggests that there needs to be a reconsideration of what ‘learning’ means in such spaces.
