Comparison of the Effects of Cold Compress and Xyla-P Cream on Stress Caused by Venipuncture among Hemodialysis Patients

Reducing the stress of patients during venipuncture is one of the main goals of nursing care.This study aimed to investigate and compare the effects of Xyla-P cream and Cold Compress on the severity of stress caused by venipuncture in hemodialysis patients. Methods: This clinical trial was conducted in 50 patients undergoing hemodialysis who were enrolled in the study using simple random sampling.The severity of stress was measured during two successivehemodialysis sessions in three stages including after the application of a placebo, Xyla-P cream, and Cold Compress. The visual analog scale was used to measure the severity of stress. The data collector and data analyzer were blinded. The collected data were analyzed using analysis of variance with repeated measures. Results: The stress scores were significantly different between the placebo group (6.69±1.66)and Xyla-P cream group (5.43±1.42)(P=0.000) and Cold Compress group (5.05±1.40)(P=0.000), and between Xyla-P cream group and Cold Compress group (P=0.026). Conclusions: Cold Compress is more effective than Xyla-P cream in reducing the stress. Therefore, nurses are recommended to use this method, instead of medications, for reducing the stress. Venous canulation via peripheral intravenous catheters is the simplest and most frequently used method for administration of an infusion. It is associated with inherent complications, which can be mechanical or infectious. Majority 10(33.3%)of samples were in age group of 20–30 yrs and 51-60 yrs, with 19(63.3)female. Maximum (36.7%) were illiterate and secondary level educated up to the primary level and had the intravenous line for the five days. In Cold Compress Group, majority of (33.3%) samples were from age group between 41–50 and 51–60, majority of 53.3% were males, maximum (43.3%) were educated up to secondary level and had the intravenous line for five days. In both the groups, majority of patients (73.3%) and (80.0%) were Hospitalized between 0-7 days.

A common problem encountered in intravenous fluid administration is the infiltration of the fluids into tissues near the point of entry of the catheter into the veins or arteries. Infiltration is due to patient movement and disruption of the vein or artery at the site of insertion of the catheter. This may lead to discoloration, discomfort and tissue destruction as well as lack of delivery of the intravenous fluids on drugs into the patient's system. This results in an inflammatory reaction, which is manifested as pain, swelling and erythema. 1 & 2

case control study on Cold Compress for acute ankle sprain
China Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, 2015Co-Authors: Yan Wang, Yuyun Wu, Wenqiong Zhao, Wei Zhang, Bo Chen, Hao Zhang, Jian PangAbstract:OBJECTIVE: To explore rest, Cold Compress and elevate (RICE) with rest, Compress and elevate (RCE) without Cold for the treatment of acute ankle sprain, in order to clear mid-term clinical effects. METHODS: Eighty-nine patients with acute ankle sprains were collected from January 2013 to March 2014,including 30 males and 59 females aged from 18 to 60 years old with an average of 36 years old; the time from injury to hospital ranged from 3 to 24 h with an average of 9 h. All patients were divided into two groups according to visiting sequence. There were 45 patients in RICE group, and 45 patients in RCE groups. The main therapeutic effect index was evaluated by Karlsson scoring, and secondary therapeutic effect index was pain and satisfactory VAS scores. Safety index evaluated by adverse event. RESULTS: On the 2nd weeks after injury, Karlsson score in RICE group was 44.66 ± 11.58, and 46.67 ± 8.52 in RCE group, while there was no statistical significance between two groups in Karlsson scores (P > 0.05). Karlsson score of two groups after treatment were higher than before treatment. There was no significantly meaning in pain and satisfactory VAS scores between two groups (P > 0.05). No adverse reaction were occurred between two groups. CONCLUSION: Cold Compress did not receive much more final gains, and no evidence showed Cold Compress could affect recovery of joint function.
