  • The Colloquial approach: An active learning technique

    Abstract:

    This paper addresses the very important problem of the effectiveness of teaching methodologies in fundamental engineering courses such as transport phenomena. An active learning strategy, termed the Colloquial approach, is proposed in order to increase student involvement in the learning process. This methodology is a considerable departure from traditional methods that use solo lecturing. It is based on guided discussions, and it promotes student understanding of new concepts by directing the student to construct new ideas by building upon the current knowledge and by focusing on key cases that capture the essential aspects of new concepts. The Colloquial approach motivates the student to participate in discussions, to develop detailed notes, and to design (or construct) his or her own explanation for a given problem. This paper discusses the main features of the Colloquial approach within the framework of other current and previous techniques. Problem-solving strategies and the need for new textbooks and for future investigations based on the Colloquial approach are also outlined.

    Abstract:

    Usually, Colloquial oral features in audiovisual fiction disappear when the oral language is transferred into written text by means of interlingual subtitles. Expressive devices and Colloquial items are often omitted for the sake of condensation; standard forms generally substitute non-standard units; and grammatical mistakes are often corrected. However, not all the agents involved in the subtitling industry tackle this issue in the same way. For instance, at the Catalan Television (TVC), there has been an internal debate concerning the use of non-standard forms in subtitles, particularly concerning Colloquial pronominal clitics. Moving away from this debate, by using eyetracking technologies and questionnaires, this exploratory study aims to investigate whether using non-standard Colloquial pronominal clitics instead of standard pronominal clitics alters the reception of the audiovisual product, and whether this approach is effective in transmitting the Colloquial flavour of the dialogues.

    Abstract:

    The Colloquial prose poetry,originating in the period of the two Han dynasties,had a new development in the Five Dynasties Period: there appeared some works with intriguing stories and simple language,which were both serious and facetious.Though the Colloquial poems had long stayed unknown in the library cave in Dunhuang,the traditional literary genre to which they belong never stopped its development: it was inherited and put into new uses by the later literary creations.The influence of the Colloquial prose poetry on the later literature can be revealed by an investigation of the relationship between the Colloquial prose poetry after the Tang-to-the-Five-Dynasty period and the development of such literary genres as bianwen(变文),stories from printed prompt-books,zaju(杂剧) and traditional opera,and popular reference books.
