Basis for Study of Compatibility, and of Compatibility of the Colon Classification with the Universal Decimal Classification

A Basis of Reference for compatibility studies is given, in terms of the dominant purpose and of the factors in the mental set of the majority of the readers seeking the service of the system. A document-finding system should have an efficient scheme for Classification built into it. The latter should be based on a sound and dynamic theory of Classification. The essential features of the current general theory of Classification are indicated. The extent to which CC and UDC conform to it is examined. Illustrates, with examples, the compatibility of CC-in-Theory with UDC-in-Theory and of CC-in-Action with UDC in- Action. Even though UDC-in-Theory may not be fully compatible with CC-in-Theory, UDC-in-Action can be made compatible with CC-in-Action and with the Basis of Reference with the aid of the guiding principles given in the Guide to U DC (1963). These principles are in conformity with the general theory of Classification. The advantages of basing an electronic document-finding system on an efficient scheme for Classification and the compatibility of CC and UDC for the purpose are mentioned. The additional advantage of using CC is indicated.

Tamil Classics: Categorization, Classification and Arrangement

Different search, retrieval and display facilities and hyper-linking within the schedules and with external files are demonstrated with examples. Greenstone Digital Library (GSDL) software has been used.

Multilingual Thesaurus and Interoperability

LalithaAbstract:This paper briefly describes a pilot project to design and develop a multilingual- English and eight other languages of India – thesaurus for ‘Education’. The thesaurus is derived from the bilingual (English-Kannada) Colon Classification (CC), (Ed. 7 revised). The CC number and Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) number are metadata in the thesaurus structure. The thesaurus for each language is separately built using Greenstone Digital Library software. The descriptors are hyperlinked. Descriptor terms, terms in the Scope Note (text), CC and DDC numbers are indexed. Two or more of the thesauri can be searched simultanseously. The advantages of using class number in the search and retrieval are mentioned. Other issues discussed include interoperability as key to effective interlinking among knowledge organising tools (KOTs) and in integrating two or more KOTs, and issues and problems in building multilingual thesaurus (thesauri) with particular reference to the cultural frames and languages of India. http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/djlit.33.4883

Colon Classification: A Requiem

Ranganathan (1892-1972), veritably called the father of Indian library movement. It outlines brief history of the seven editions of his revolutionary Colon Classification (CC) from 1928 to 1987. Seven editions are grouped into three evolutionary versions. It states the unique features of the CC as based on his deep study of the nature and growth of knowledge, and explains the work of designing a Classification system into three successive but demarcated planes of work, namely, idea, verbal, and notional planes. Tools for designing and evaluating a system are enshrined in his 55 canons, 22 principles, 13 postulates and 10 devices. Further, this paper discusses the division and mapping of knowledge, types of subjects, and modes of their formation in the universe of knowledge as envisaged by Ranganathan. Semantic and syntactic relations are enshrined in his PMEST facet formula fitted with rounds and levels of facets, and other principles, such as the famous Wall-Picture principle, for citation order of facets. This complexity is manipulated within the CC on the basis of numerous of Ranganathan’s contributions to subject analysis, including the modes of formation of subjects; an objective rationale for the arrangement of main classes; the PMEST facet formula, extended by the postulate of rounds and levels; a general dependency principle for collocation of related components in a facet formula; phase relationships between the components of complex interdisciplinary subjects; the recurrence of an APUPA arrangement throughout the linear ordering of materials; and an absolute syntax of ideas.

Use of Ranganathan’s analytico-synthetic approach in developing a domain ontology in library and information science

Ontology, a comparatively new concept used as a tool for knowledge organization, establishes connections between terms and concepts enhancing the scope and usefulness of library Classification. Ranganathan had invented the strong theory of the analytico-synthetic method in Classification and devised Colon Classification. In this study a domain ontology on library and information science has been developed by implementing Raganathan’s faceted approach of Classification. The hierarchical relationships among terms have been established primarily keeping conformity with that of Ranganathan’s Colon Classification (7 th edition). But to accommodate new vocabularies, DDC 23 rd edition and UDC Standard edition are consulted. The Protege ontology editor has been used. The study carefully examines the steps in which the analytico-synthetic method have been followed. Ranganathan’s Canon of Characteristics and its relevant Canons have been followed for defining the class-subclass hierarchy. It concludes by identifying the drawbacks as well as the merits faced while developing the ontology. This paper proves the relevance and importance of Ranganathan’s philosophy in developing ontology based knowledge organization.

EnglishThe objective of this paper is to detect if, how and what relations among concepts and bibliographic entities have been examined in the knowledge organisation system based on Colon Classification, and how these are represented within notations produced during the Classification process. The aim is pursued through the review of tools to locate and represent concepts and their relations presented in the first part of the Colon Classification manual, and through the analysis of the meaning of the symbols used to this purpose.

The APUPA bell curve : Ranganathan’s visual pattern for knowledge organization
2017Co-Authors: Carlo Bianchini, Luca Giusti, Claudio GnoliAbstract:Among many clever innovations, the pioneer of faceted Classifications, S.R. Ranganathan, introduced a structural model called APUPA (Alien-Penumbral-Umbral-Penumbral-Alien). This model can be visualized in the form of a bell curve. APUPA is commonly cited as an ideal shape resulting from the arrangement of works according to the principles of faceted Classification, which should enable a reader browsing shelves to visually find "his book" as located in the middle of a sequence of related subjects on both its left and its right. However, we show how this is but one application of a more general model of thought recurring throughout Ranganathan’s works. Main classes order of Colon Classification (CC), and anteriorizing common isolates, are two more features where the bell curve model can be observed. We analyze the presence of this concept in Ranganathan’s work through excerpts from a variety of his published books. The concept is compared with models adopted in the work of other Classificationists, and with various ideas available in scientific literature, including Bernoulli numbers and the mathematical theory of communication. It can be concluded that the bell curve pattern is yet another facet of the deep originality of Ranganathan’s complex and rich classificatory thought.

Arrangement of FRBR Entities in Colon Classification Call Numbers

Dealing with lack of organization in library shelves and in the lists of bibliographic records resulting from users’ searches in our present online catalogs, the article discusses the chance to organize bibliographic resources by FRBR entities using the model of the facet formula provided for call numbers in Colon Classification and by means of relevant, ready, and useable extant data. A tale scopo, illustra la struttura concettuale della disposizione classificata dei documenti a scaffale (sequenza di filiazione) ottenuta mediante l'uso della Classificazione Colon. Dimostra con esempi che la sequenza di filiazione: rispetta i principi definiti da Pollard e Krummel per l'organizzazione delle bibliografie; rispecchia la struttura completa dei dati e delle relazioni richieste dalla teoria della catalogazione; e in grado, infine, di rappresentare adeguatamente le relazioni tra un'opera e le altre entita associate (FRBR). L'articolo mostra come, nella sequenza di filiazione, sia possibile trovare una visione unitaria (olistica) del catalogo, realizzando una complessa organizzazione bibliografica che rappresenti correttamente il contenuto semantico, le relazioni letterarie e gli aspetti formali delle risorse bibliografiche. For this reason, the paper presents the conceptual structure of shelf classified arrangement of documents (filiatory sequence) by Colon Classification. It shows with examples that filiatory sequence complies with principles provided for bibliographies by Pollard and Krummel, it presents a complete structure of data and relationships provided by actual cataloguing theory, and it manages correctly relationships among a Work and its associated entities (FRBR). The paper shows that the filiatory sequence expresses a holistic vision of the catalog, creating a complex bibliographic organization that represents with exhaustiveness semantic content, literary relationships, and formal features of the resources. The use of conceptual structure of filiatory sequence in ranking search results is suggested and its relevance for creating new navigating tools is highlighted.

Inference engine for devices of Colon Classification in AI based automated Classification system

Discusses their helpfulness in the automatic Classification system, the Viswamitra, designed using Artificial Intelligence techniques with the help of PROLOG language. Discusses the procedure of building numbers for compound isolates using superimposition devices, alphabetical devices, geographic devices etc. Some suggestions are also made to rethink about the rule for alphabetical devices. For example, the system suggests to pick up the first three letters of a single worded term, first two letters from each word of a binomial term and the first letter from each word of a multinomial term to build isolate number using alphabetical device. Suggests some modifications in Colon Classification so that the concept of Analytico Synthetic Classification is used elaborately for information retrieval in the age of ontology.
