    In this paper we present research activities on the interaction between Light and human emotion. We describe the SmartHeliosity prototype which evaluates human emotions to provide appropriate Coloured Light in order to enhance emotional wellbeing within the working environment. We present technical specifications, colour concepts to provoke certain emotions and user feedback to the prototype system.

    Groups of juvenile tench (7.02 ± 0.28 g) were reared under four different Light regimes; blue Light, red Light (80 Wm−2 12L:12D photoperiod) white Light (912 ± 210 lux, 80 Wm−2, 12L:12D photoperiod) and no Light (0 lux) (0L:24D). Visibility of fish out of shelters was used as an indicator of activity and was monitored by video recording. Blood plasma cortisol concentrations were also measured. Fish under blue or white Light were significantly less active during the photophase than those under red or no Light (P < 0.01). Red Light produced similar activity patterns to fish receiving 24 h darkness. Plasma cortisol concentrations were also significantly influenced (P < 0.05) with the fish under white Light having the highest plasma cortisol concentration (317 ± 62 ng cm−3) compared to fish in the dark treatment (106 ± 36 ng cm−3). Thus, the provision of Coloured Light filters increases activity in juvenile tench and may reduce their intrinsic stress level.

    Abstract:

    Breeding adult male three-spined sticklebacks,Gasterosteus aculeatusL., develop an elaborate breeding signal, the primary component of which is ventral red coloration. In laboratory dominance tests staged under illumination conditions that maintained or eliminated male perceived coloration, this study examined (1) the relationship between male coloration and fighting ability and (2) the applicability of three hypotheses for the current function of male coloration in male–male competitive interactions. In pairs of males from a Long Island, NY, population matched for size and prior dominance experience, the more brightly Coloured males were more likely to initiate and win under white Light. The effect of colour on dominance success was lost under replicates illuminated by Coloured-Light treatments that masked the signal by eliminating its visual contrast. The loss of competitive advantage associated with more conspicuous coloration was not an artefact of illumination manipulations, since the effects seen under white Light were maintained under a Coloured-Light treatment that maintained male coloration. These data suggest that red belly coloration of males functions as a threat signal.

  • Alarm substances induce associative social learning in honeybees, Apis mellifera

    Alarm signals are widespread in the social insects. It is commonly accepted that such signals produce adaptive short-term aggressive or aversive responses in conspecifics, but the possibility that they could also lead to social learning about predator identity has not yet been addressed. Here we demonstrated that responses to alarm volatiles can lead to social learning about asocial stimuli in honeybees. Using a phototactic assay, we initially confirmed previous findings that alarm volatiles deter individuals from approaching a Coloured Light. When the same individuals subsequently experienced the Coloured Light in the absence of alarm volatiles, the same deterrent effect was observed, suggesting that responses to alarm volatiles became conditioned to the Coloured Light. Previous experience with the Light in the absence of alarm cues did not induce this response, nor did previous association of alarm cues with a different Coloured Light. Our findings highLight that social insect signals can lead to social learning through a simple yet powerful associative mechanism.
