Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research, 2000Co-Authors: E.z. Mushi, M.g. Binta, R.g. Chabo, R.t. Ndebele, R. PanzirahAbstract:MUSHI, E.Z., BINTA, M.G., CHABO, R.G ., NDEBELE, R. & PANZIRAH, R. 2000. Heminth parasites of domestic pigeons (Columba Livia domestica) in Sebele, Gaborone, Botswana. Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research, 67:75-76 Twelve adult domestic pigeons from Sebele, Gaborone, Botswana, were examined for the presence of helminth parasites. The cestode genus Raillietina and two species of nematodes, Dispharynx spi ralis and Ascaridia Columbae were recovered. Most pigeons (75 %) were infected with Raillietina spp. often in concurrence with A. Columbae.

Age-correlation of blood values in the rock pigeon (Columba Livia).
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Part A Molecular & integrative physiology, 2010Co-Authors: Roland Prinzinger, Andrea MisovicAbstract:Hematological adaptations to age (1-17 years) and about variability per se for free-living rock pigeons Columba Livia are presented. Increasing age is correlated with decreasing values of hematocrit and hemoglobin. A marked reduction of lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27) activity in the first 2-3 years may be caused by a training-based increase of the relative portion of the aerobically working red breast muscles (responsible for endurance) at the expense of the proportion of anaerobically working white breast muscles. The age-correlated increase in glucose could indicate a decreasing tolerance for carbohydrates. Optimal flight performance is achieved by the doves at an age of about 2-3 years; the high performance is retained until an age range of 7-9 years.

prevalence of toxoplasma gondii antibodies in domestic Columba Livia domestica and wild Columba Livia Livia pigeons in nigde region turkey
Acta parasitologica Turcica, 2011Co-Authors: Mustafa Karatepe, Selçuk Kiliç, Bilge Karatepe, Cahit BaburAbstract:OBJECTIVE The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii specific antibodies in domestic (Columba Livia domestica) and wild (Columba Livia Livia) pigeons between October 2003-June 2004. METHODS Blood samples were collected from 216 pigeons, consisting of 105 (55 female, 50 male) domestic pigeons and 111 (53 female, 58 male) wild pigeons. The sera were tested for T. gondii antibodies using the Sabin Feldman Dye Test (SFDT). RESULTS One of the 105 (0.95%) domestic pigeon and one of the 111 (0.90%) wild pigeon were found to be seropositive for T. gondii antibodies at the titer of 1:16. CONCLUSION This is the first serological study on toxoplasmosis in the domestic and wild pigeon in the Nigde region of Turkey.

Niğde yöresinde evcil (Columba Livia domestica) ve yabani güvercinlerde (Columba Livia Livia) toxoplasma gondii antikorlarının prevalansı
2011Co-Authors: Mustafa Karatepe, Selçuk Kiliç, Bilge Karatepe, Cahit BaburAbstract:Amaç: Bu çalışma, Niğde yöresinde evcil (Columba Livia domestica) ve yabani (Columba Livia Livia) güvercinlerde Toxoplasma gondii’nin seroprevalansının saptanması amacı ile yapılmıştır. Yöntemler: Bu amaçla Ekim 2003-Haziran 2004 tarihleri arasında Niğde yöresinden 105’i evcil (53 dişi, 58 erkek) toplam 216 güvercinden kan alınmış ve serumları çıkarılmıştır. Elde edilen serumlar T. gondii antikorları açısından Sabin-Feldman boya testi ile incelenmişlerdir. Bulgular: Test sonucunda 105 evcil güvercinin 1’i (%0.95) ve 111 yabani güvercinin 1’i (%0.90) 1/16 T. gondii antikorları yönünden titrede seropozitif bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Bu çalışma, Niğde ilinde evcil ve yabani güvercinlerdeki toxoplasmosis üzerine yapılan ilk serolojik çalışmadır.Objective: The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii specifi c antibodies in domestic (Columba Livia domestica) and wild (Columba Livia Livia) pigeons between October 2003-June 2004. SPACED-TRIAL OPERANT LEARNING WITH PURELY INSTRUMENTAL CONTINGENCIES IN PIGEONS (Columba Livia)
International Journal of Comparative Psychology, 1997Co-Authors: Mauricio R. Papini, Brian ThomasAbstract:The purpose of this experiment was to study persistence during extinction of key pecking performance in pigeons (Columba Livia) after training with either a large (15 food pellets) or a small reward magnitude (1 food pellet). Strictly instrumental contingencies were enforced and a single trial per daily session was administered. There were 52 acquisition trials followed by 48 extinction trials. Although extinction started from similar response levels in both groups, the pigeons trained with 15 pellets exhibited significantly slower extinction than those trained with a single pellet. This result is discussed in the context of comparative research on the effects of reward magnitude and schedule on extinction in vertebrates.
