    In this innovative reading, the development of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) is explored in the context of an emerging nationalism in Southeast Asia, the interplay of overseas Chinese networks and the Comintern. Based on extensive new archival material, Anna Belogurova shows how the MCP was shaped by the historical contingencies of anti-imperialism in Southeast Asia, long-term Chinese migration trends, networks, identity, and the organizational practices of the Comintern. This is the story of how a group of left-leaning Chinese migrant intellectuals engaged with global forces to create a relevant and lasting Malayan national identity, providing fresh international perspectives on the history of Malaysia, Chinese communism, the Cold War, and decolonization.

    Author(s): Belogurova, Anna | Abstract: In the late 1920s, the overseas chapters of the Chinese Communist Party allied with the Third Communist International (Comintern)’s pursuit of world revolution and made efforts to take part in anti-colonial movements around the world. As Chinese migrant revolutionaries dealt with discrimination in their adopted countries, they promoted local, Chinese, and world revolutions, borrowing ideas from various actors while they built their organizations and contributed to the project of China’s revival. This article offers a window into the formation of globally connected Chinese revolutionary networks and explores their engagement with Comintern internationalism in its key enclaves in Berlin, San Francisco, Havana, Singapore, and Manila. These engagements built on existing ideas about China’s revival and channeled localization needs of the Chinese migrant Communists. The article draws on sources deposited in the Comintern archive in Moscow (RGASPI), as well as on personal reminiscences published as literary and historical materials (wenshi ziliao).   • The Chinese International of Nationalities: the Chinese Communist Party, the Comintern, and the foundation of the Malayan National Communist Party, 1923–1939

    Abstract:

    In the global ideological movements of the early twentieth century, notably communism, new political concepts moved across different cultures. Together with the process of internationalization, this led to problems concerning the translation and interpretation of linguistic terms. Based on little-studied sources deposited in the Comintern archive in Moscow, this article shows that, although the members of the newly formed Malayan Communist Party (1930) were virtually all Chinese, it became the first organization to discuss directly the possibility of a multi-ethnic Malayan nation within the borders of the Malay Peninsula. As the Comintern encouraged the establishment of ‘national’ communist parties, the ambiguity of the Chinese word minzu resulted in the emergence of a discourse regarding the Malayan ‘nation’, which would be liberated from colonialism under communist leadership.

El texto contiene tambien un esbozo de contactos mantenidos por Moscu y el PCP a lo largo de la decada de 1930. Sobre la base de los documentos de la Comintern resguardados en Moscu, y algunos otros archivos, los autores recuperan una historia poco conocida en la historiografia de la izquierda paraguaya. EnglishAbstract: The article analyzes, above all, the first stage of relations between the PC of Paraguay and the Communist International (Comintern), when the PCP suffered the internal crisis and change of leader as a consequence of the direct interference of the South American Secretariat of the Comintern. The text also contains an outline of contacts maintained by Moscow and the PCP throughout the 1930s. On the basis of the documents of the Comintern kept in Moscow, and some other archives, the authors recover a little-known history in the historiography of the Paraguayan left.

    Este articulo analiza los antecedentes y evolucion de la afiliacion de la izquierda cubana con la Comintern (Internacional Comunista), desde sus primeros contactos con la Revolucion Bolchevique hasta finales de la decada de 1920. Los autores recuperan una historia poco conocida en la historiografia, con el objetivo de demostrar que durante una serie de desacuerdos entre Moscu y el comunismo cubano, la influencia de la Comintern estaba lejos de ser considerada una institucion desfavorable a los intereses del movimiento comunista de Cuba, y, mas bien, contribuyo al fortalecimiento de la izquierda nacional.

Sobre la base de los documentos del Archivo de la Comintern resguardados en Moscu, los autores estan recuperando la historia de la presencia latinoamericana en estas escuelas de cuadros, asunto poco reflejado en la historiografia de la izquierda de America Latina del periodo de la Comintern. El articulo analiza los rasgos basicos del cuerpo de estudiantes latinoamericanos en Moscu, asi como los pormenores de su formacion y evolucion. EnglishAbstract: The article analyzes the main features of the policy of training of Latin American communist militants within the cadre schools in Moscow founded throughout the existence of the Comintern. Basing on documents of the Comintern Archives guarded in Moscow the authors are recovering the history of Latin American presence in these schools which is poorly reflected in the historiography of the Latin American Left-Wing movement in the period of the Comintern. The article analyzes the basic features of the group of Latin American students in Moscow, as well as details of its formation and evolution.

En el presente artículo los autores ofrecen una detallada relación de las colecciones e inventarios relacionados con América Latina, que permiten ahondar en el estudio de cómo fueron surgiendo los vínculos orgánicos entre la Comintern y los partidos o grupos comunistas de Latinoamérica, investigar el carácter y el grado de influencia ejercida por la dirección de Moscú en la formación y el funcionamiento de los partidos comunistas del área, destacando aquellos documentos que revelan las causas y motivaciones profundas que incidieron en la evolución de la estrategia y la táctica de las organizaciones afiliadas a la IC y los entresijos de las crisis que atravesaron.

    espanolResumen: En 1935, en el marco del giro frente populista del movimiento comunista internacional, el Partido Comunista de Chile y la Federacion Obrera de Chile abandonaron el “sindicalismo libre” y aceptaron, tacitamente, participar del “sindicalismo legal,” regulado por el despreciado Codigo del Trabajo, en pos de la unificacion del movimiento sindical. Utilizando documentacion inedita y hasta ahora desconocida del Komintern, adjuntada a un dossier policial brasileno, este articulo argumenta que la linea sindical que termino instaurandose en Chile fue el resultado de una serie de conflictos, negociaciones y acuerdos, tanto entre dirigentes chilenos y emisarios Cominternianos, como al interior de la misma organica Cominterniana. EnglishAbstract: In 1935, in the context of the popular front turn, the Communist Party of Chile and the Workers’ Federation of Chile abandoned so-called “revolutionary unionism” and tacitly accepted “legal unionism” and its despised Labor Code in order to work for the unity of the Chilean labor movement. Using previously unknown Comintern documents attached to a police dossier, this article argues that such a momentous turn was the result of a series of conflicts, negotiations, and compromises within Chilean communism and the regional bodies of the Comintern.
