  • Information-centric networking for machine-to-machine data delivery: A case study in smart grid applications

    Abstract:

    Largely motivated by the proliferation of content-centric applications in the Internet, information-centric networking has attracted the attention of the research community. By tailoring network operations around named information objects instead of end hosts, ICN yields a series of desirable features such as the spatiotemporal decoupling of communicating entities and the support of in-network caching. In this article, we advocate the introduction of such ICN features in a new, rapidly transforming Communication Domain: the smart grid. With the rapid introduction of multiple new actors, such as distributed (renewable) energy resources and electric vehicles, smart grids present a new networking landscape where a diverse set of multi-party machine-to-machine applications are required to enhance the observability of the power grid, often in real time and on top of a diverse set of Communication infrastructures. Presenting a generic architectural framework, we show how ICN can address the emerging smart grid Communication challenges. Based on real power grid topologies from a power distribution network in the Netherlands, we further employ simulations to both demonstrate the feasibility of an ICN solution for the support of real-time smart grid applications and further quantify the performance benefits brought by ICN against the current host-centric paradigm. Specifically, we show how ICN can support real-time state estimation in the medium voltage power grid, where high volumes of synchrophasor measurement data from distributed vantage points must be delivered within a very stringent end-to-end delay constraint, while swiftly overcoming potential power grid component failures.

    Abstract Vehicular Communication enables a variety of safety, infotainment, mobility, and environmental applications. Vehicular Communication is one of the leading research areas because of its specific applications and characteristics and has attracted great interest from academia, industries, and governments. Our paper is a comprehensive survey of vehicular Communication that covers the state of the art and future research directions. The article is a new contribution in the similar category of tutorials/surveys of the vehicular Communication Domain with the latest details. State of the art presents the architecture, applications, emerging radio access technologies, standardization, and project activities. We review the protocol stacks of the intelligent transportation system (ITS) in the USA, Japan, and Europe with their latest standards. In this paper, we present the emerging radio access technologies such as visible light Communication, mmWave, Cellular-V2X, and 5G for connected and autonomous vehicles and their associated challenges. The new research directions in the emerging areas of this Domain, such as seamless connectivity, edge, fog, software-defined and named data network, and security are also present. We believe that our work will help the researchers, developers and government agencies to become familiar with the latest features of the Domain.

    Factor analytic studies have been conducted to examine the inter-relationships and degree of overlap among symptoms in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This paper reviewed 36 factor analytic studies that have examined ASD symptoms, using 13 different instruments. Studies were grouped into three categories: Studies with all DSM-IV symptoms, studies with a subset of DSM-IV symptoms, and studies with symptoms that were not specifically based on the DSM-IV. There was consistent support for a common social/Communication Domain that is distinct from a restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests Domain. Implications for symptom conceptualization and diagnosis in ASD are discussed.

    This paper conceptualises replication research as being one of the most needed areas of ongoing academic activity. Using George the Galapagos tortoise as a metaphor for the lack of replication research, it is argued that only by replicating research studies over time can solid theory be developed. For the most part, advertising and marketing Communication research consists of non-replicated, one-shot, point-in-time experiments which, once accepted and published by a journal, becomes the litany of the academic community and is then deified by the citation process. The paper begins by reviewing the background of replication research in the marketing Communication Domain and applies it to current thinking and publication trends. Reasons for the lack of replication research are presented and some conclusions are drawn for those seeking to confirm or challenge existing research. An agenda is provided for the development and publication of replication research.

  • The Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adolescence and Adulthood

    This article describes the symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) manifested by 405 individuals between the ages of 10 and 53 years, all of whom had an ASD diagnosis. Data were collected using the Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI-R) to assess the pattern of autism symptoms in adolescence and adulthood. Findings include that although virtually all sample members met the criteria for Autistic Disorder earlier in their childhood, just over half (54.8%) would have met autism criteria if current scores were used to complete the diagnostic algorithm; that adolescents were more likely to improve in the Reciprocal Social Interaction Domain than the adults, whereas the adults were more likely to improve in the Restricted, Repetitive Behaviors and Interests Domain, and there were no differences in severity of symptoms between cohorts in the Communication Domain; and that individual symptoms showed unique trajectories, with greatest symptom abatement between lifetime and current ADI-R ratings for speaking in at least three-word phrases and the least symptom improvement for having friendships. Findings were interpreted in the context of life course development, reformulations of diagnostic criteria, and changing service contexts for individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
