    Abstract:

    A model that combines Human information processing with Communication theory is described: the Communication-Human Information Processing (C-HIP) model. Emphasized are the factors that can influence processing at various stages. Bottlenecks in the process can reduce warning effectiveness. The C-HIP model can be used (e.g., by manufacturers) to assess warning utility. Human factors and ergonomics (HF/E) experts can use it as a method to systematically structure their warning analyses.

    Warnings are one of several hazard control methods used to protect employees and property against danger and loss. This article surveys a set of factors known to influence the effectiveness of workplace warnings. The description of empirical research is organized around a Communication--Human information processing (C--HIP) model. The model begins with a source entity attempting to relay a warning message through one or more media/sensory channels to one or more receivers. At the receiver, processing begins when attention is switched to the warning message and then maintained while information is extracted. Processing continues through the successive stages of comprehension, beliefs and attitudes, motivation, and ends with compliance behaviour. Any of these stages can be a bottleneck that causes processing to stop, diminishing the effectiveness of the warning. The factors that are influential at each stage are described. The C--HIP model provides a structure to systematically examine factors that can cause risk Communication to fail and for finding ways to improve risk Communication in the workplace.

  • Warnings and Instructions: Design Factors for Medical Devices and Systems

    Abstract:

    The development and widespread use of sophisticated medical devices to help patients has also hurt patients through operator error. Some of this error may be attributable to the quality of the labeling instructions that accompany these devices. Lessons learned from two decades of research on warnings may serve as a guide to development of effective medical device labeling practices. In this article, we highlight some of the issues associated with poor medical device labeling practices, suggest a framework for guiding development of medical device labeling practices based on the Communication-Human information processing model, and finally, present an example of a medical device for which better labeling and instructions are needed.

    Abstract:

    In this paper we develop a wireless Communication Human machine interface (HMI) system, which uses a smart-phone. This HMI has some advantages over the other HMIs, such as it is small, cheap, and space sensing. It uses the accelerometer and the gyroscope of the smartphone to generate six commands to control a robot via Wi-Fi network. The experiment results show that our HMI is convenient and effective for remote control.

    Abstract:

    Although there is discordance between Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) blood plasma and seminal plasma viral loads (VL), little is known about the dynamics of VL rebound in these compartments upon discontinuation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Therefore, we sought to examine the relationship between blood and semen VL rebound after discontinuation of HAART. Participants in this substudy were men enrolled from two centers of a multicenter, placebo-controlled randomized trial of HIV therapeutic vaccination using ALVAC with or without Remune. With at least 2 years of sustained virologic suppression and following a 20-week vaccination course, subjects underwent structured HAART interruption. Fourteen men provided semen samples. Seven to 12 weeks after HAART interruption, all 14 men had detectable blood VLs whereas 8 of 14 had detectable seminal VLs. There was a significant correlation between blood and seminal VLs (Spearman r=0.58, p=0.03) at the time of semen collection. An earlier time to detectable blood VL after HAART interruption was associated with higher seminal VL (Spearman r=−0.64, p=0.02). These findings support the compartmentalization of HIV and underscore the importance of understanding the genital tract as an HIV reservoir in the quest to minimize HIV transmission.

  • RAPID Communication: Human Ovarian Cancers Express Somatostatin Receptors

    Abstract:

    Characteristics of receptors for somatostatin (SST) analog RC-160 on 17 surgical specimens of Human epithelial ovarian cancer and two Human ovarian cancer lines were determined by ligand competition assays. The expression of mRNA for four SST receptor subtypes (sst1, sst2A, sst3 and sst5) was investigated by RT-PCR. Thirteen of 17 specimens (76%) exhibited high affinity binding sites for RC-160 with Kd = 6.55 nmol/L and a Bmax = 575.4 fmol/mg membrane protein. Specific receptors for RC-160 were also found in xenografts of OV-1063 and UCI-107 Human ovarian cancer lines. The mRNA for sst1 was detected in 65% of the ovarian cancer specimens, while the incidence of sst2A, sst3 and sst5 was 65%, 41% and 24%, respectively. Both ovarian cancer cell lines also expressed mRNA for these four subtypes. The presence of these SST receptor subtypes in Human ovarian cancers allows the use of SST analogs and their radionuclide and cytotoxic derivatives for the diagnosis and treatment of this malignancy.

    : Molecular genetic studies have established that mutations in the gene encoding the 22-kDa peripheral myelin protein (PMP-22) are responsible for hereditary peripheral neuropathies in the trembler mouse and in a subset of Humans with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, type 1a. The function of the PMP-22 protein remains unknown. Several studies on myelin proteins in the PNS have indicated that the L2/HNK-1 epitope, which is believed to be both a ligand for cellular adhesion and a target for autoimmune monoclonal IgM neuritis, may be found on heretofore unidentified proteins with a molecular mass of 19–28 kDa. In this report, we provide immunological evidence that at least one of these proteins is PMP-22.
