    Abstract Purpose: Communication Partner training can be beneficial in reducing accessibility barriers for people with aphasia The aim of the present study was to determine whether face-to-face or telepractice (real time video-teleconference system) delivery of a Communication Partner training program was associated with greater improvements in confidence and knowledge of effective Communication strategies among allied health professionals.Method: 55 health professionals were randomly allocated to receive face-to-face (n = 27) or telepractice (n = 28) Communication Partner training. All participants completed their allocated training. A customised mixed-methods self-completed questionnaire was used before and after receiving Communication Partner training for participants to rate their confidence when communicating with people with aphasia using a 100mm visual analogue scale and answer an open-ended question about knowledge of Communication strategies. Results: At baseline, there was no significant differences between groups in confidence ratings (median (IQR), face-to-face 48mm (32mm, 54mm), telepractice 43mm (29mm, 56mm)) or number of strategies identified (face-to-face median=4, IQR 3-5; telepractice median=3, IQR 2-4).     Purpose: Little is known about the critical ingredients of successful Communication Partner Training (CPT) programmes. The aim of this randomised controlled trial was to investigate the effects of including an educational component before a conversation with a person with aphasia compared to a conversation only.Method: Thirty-eight speech–language pathology students were randomly allocated to either the Full programme or Conversation only groups. The Full programme group received a lecture about Communication strategies then participated in a conversation with a person with aphasia, while the other group participated in the conversation only.     Abstract:

    Communication Partner training (CPT) has been used to support Communication Partners to interact successfully with people with aphasia (PWA). Through successful CPT interaction PWA's accessibility to healthcare is notably improved. The present study sought to build on prior studies by investigating the experiences of individuals with aphasia and healthcare providers to ascertain what they deemed to be beneficial from CPT and what could be refined or improved, dependent on the setting and skill set of those participating. To gain an understanding of the experiences of PWA involved in the provision of CPT to health professional (HP) students. Also to investigate the experiences of HP students who participated in the CPT programme. Eight PWA and 77 HP students who had completed a CPT programme participated in a focus group/semi-structured interview (PWA) and feedback session (HP students) moderated by two speech-language pathologists (SLPs). These sessions were recorded (audio and video), transcribed verbatim, including non-verbal Communication, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Overall, the study sought to understand experiences of the training. Both the PWA and HP students reported positive experiences of CPT. PWA discussed their perception that CPT improved HPs and HP students' understanding and interactions conversing with them and emphasized the need for training and education for all health related professions. HP students enjoyed the opportunity to experience interacting with PWA, without being 'assessed' and felt it consolidated their learning based on lecture content. Inclusive and accessible healthcare is paramount to ensure the engagement of patients and providers. Based on the experiences and feedback of the participants in this current study, CPT offers a salient and practical training method with potential to improve practice. Participants perceived CPT to be beneficial and validated the need for the training to support PWA accessing healthcare.

    Abstract Background Aphasia is a common consequence of stroke. Despite receiving specialised training in Communication, speech-language pathology students may lack confidence when communicating with People with Aphasia (PWA). This paper reports data from secondary outcome measures from a randomised controlled trial. Objective The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of Communication Partner training on the Communication skills of speech-language pathology students during conversations with PWA. Method Thirty-eight speech-language pathology students were randomly allocated to trained and untrained groups. The first group received a lecture about Communication strategies for communicating with PWA then participated in a conversation with PWA (Trained group), while the second group of students participated in a conversation with the PWA without receiving the lecture (Untrained group). The conversations between the groups were analysed according to the Measure of skill in Supported Conversation (MSC) scales, Measure of Participation in Conversation (MPC) scales, types of strategies used in conversation, and the occurrence and repair of conversation breakdowns. Results The trained group received significantly higher MSC Revealing Competence scores, used significantly more props, and introduced significantly more new ideas into the conversation than the untrained group. The trained group also used more gesture and writing to facilitate the conversation, however, the difference was not significant. There was no significant difference between the groups according to MSC Acknowledging Competence scores, MPC Interaction or Transaction scores, or in the number of interruptions, minor or major conversation breakdowns, or in the success of strategies initiated to repair the conversation breakdowns. Conclusion Speech-language pathology students may benefit from participation in Communication Partner training programs.

    Abstract Objectives To update a previous systematic review describing the effect of Communication Partner training on individuals with aphasia and their Communication Partners, with clinical questions addressing effects of Partner training on language, Communication activity/participation, psychosocial adjustment, and quality of life. Data Sources Twelve electronic databases were searched using 23 search terms. References from relevant articles were hand searched. Study Selection Three reviewers independently reviewed abstracts, excluding those that failed to meet inclusion criteria. Thirty-two full text articles were reviewed by 2 independent reviewers. Articles not meeting inclusion criteria were eliminated, resulting in a corpus of 25 articles for full review. Data Extraction For the 25 articles, 1 reviewer extracted descriptive data regarding participants, intervention, outcome measures, and results. A second reviewer verified the accuracy of the extracted data. Data Synthesis The 3-member review team classified studies using the American Academy of Neurology levels of evidence. Two independent reviewers evaluated each article using design-specific tools to assess research quality. Conclusions All 25 of the current review articles reported positive changes from Partner training. Therefore, to date, 56 studies across 2 systematic reviews have reported positive outcomes from Communication Partner training in aphasia. The results of the current review are consistent with the previous review and necessitate no change to the earlier recommendations, suggesting that Communication Partner training should be conducted to improve Partner skill in facilitating the Communication of people with chronic aphasia. Additional high-quality research is needed to strengthen the original 2010 recommendations and expand recommendations to individuals with acute aphasia. High-quality clinical trials are also needed to demonstrate implementation of Communication Partner training in complex environments (eg, health care).

    Twenty-three studies identified from a previous systematic review examining the effects of Communication Partner training on persons with aphasia and their Communication Partners were evaluated for methodological quality. Two reviewers rated the studies on defined methodological quality criteria relevant to each study design. There were 11 group studies, seven single-subject participant design studies, and five qualitative studies. Quality scores were derived for each study. The mean inter-rater reliability of scores for each study design ranged from 85-93%, with Cohen's Kappa indicating substantial agreement between raters. Methodological quality of research on Communication Partner training in aphasia was highly varied. Overall, group studies employed the least rigorous methodology as compared to single subject and qualitative research. Only two of 11 group studies complied with more than half of the quality criteria. No group studies reported therapist blinding and only one group study reported participant blinding. Across all types of studies, the criterion of treatment fidelity was most commonly omitted. Failure to explicitly report certain methodological quality criteria may account for low ratings. Using methodological rating scales specific to the type of study design may help improve the methodological quality of aphasia treatment studies, including those on Communication Partner training.

Data Sources Twenty-three terms were used to search 12 electronic databases (eg, PubMed, CINAHL, PsychINFO, PsychArticles, CSA Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, Social Sciences Citation Index [Web of Science], SUMSearch, TRIP, EMBASE, REHABDATA, National Library for Health, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) and the journal "Aphasiology." References from all relevant articles were hand-searched. Study Selection Two reviewers independently applied inclusion criteria to select potential relevant articles from the titles and abstracts of references retrieved by the literature search. The full text of the remaining articles was reviewed by a 5-member panel, resulting in a corpus of 31 studies that met the final inclusion criteria. Data Extraction Two independent reviewers extracted the descriptive data related to the participants, the intervention, the outcome measures, and the results. Data Synthesis The 5-member review team by consensus classified the studies using the American Academy of Neurology system for classification of evidence (2004). Conclusions Evidence shows that Communication Partner training is effective in improving Communication activities and/or participation of the Communication Partner and is probably effective in improving Communication activities and/or participation of persons with chronic aphasia when they are interacting with trained Communication Partners. There is insufficient evidence to make recommendations related to the impact of Partner training on persons with acute aphasia or the impact of training on language impairment, psychosocial adjustment, or quality of life for either the person with aphasia or the Communication Partner.

    In this paper, K bidirectionally communicating node pairs with each node having N antennas and one amplify and forward relay having R antennas are considered. Each node wants to transmit d data streams to its Communication Partner. Taking into account that each node can perform self interference cancellation, a new scheme called Pair-Aware Interference Alignment is proposed. In this scheme, the transmit precoding matrices and the relay processing matrix are chosen in such a way that at any given receiver all the interfering signals except the self interference are within the interference subspace and the useful signal is in a subspace linearly independent of the interference subspace. If the number of variables is larger than or equal to the number of constraints in the system, the system is classified as proper, else as improper. Through simulations it is shown that for a proper system (2Kd≤2N+R-d), interferences can be perfectly aligned and the useful signals can be decoded interference-free at the receivers. An iterative algorithm to achieve the interference alignment solution is proposed. Also for the proper system fulfilling a certain additional condition, which will be derived in this paper, a closed form solution is proposed.

    In this paper, we consider a bidirectional Communication between K node pairs, where each node is equipped with multiple antennas and has a message to be transmitted to its Communication Partner. There is no direct link between the 2K nodes and a relay is employed to enable the Communication. It is assumed that the relay does not have enough antennas to perform receive and transmit zero forcing. As interferences are unavoidable at each receiver, we call this channel K user pair symmetric relay interference channel. We show that the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) achievable by the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) Interference Alignment in such a K user pair symmetric relay interference channel are the same as in a K user symmetric interference channel [1] without a relay. Besides this, the presence of a relay simplifies the algorithm for computing the alignment solution. We propose a two step closed form solution for the alignment problem based on the two way relaying protocol.

    The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the augmentative and alternative Communication (AAC) Partner instruction intervention literature to determine (a) the overall effects of Partner interventions on the Communication of individuals using AAC, and (b) any possible moderating variables relating to participant, intervention, or outcome characteristics. Seventeen single-case experimental design studies (53 participants) met the inclusion criteria and were advanced to the full coding and analysis phase of the investigation. Descriptive analyses and effect size estimations using the Improvement Rate Difference (IRD) metric were conducted. Overall, Communication Partner interventions were found to be highly effective across a range of participants using AAC, intervention approaches, and outcome measure characteristics, with more evidence available for participants less than 12 years of age, most of whom had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder or intellectual/developmental disability. Aided AAC modeling, expectant delay, and open-ended question asking were the most frequently targeted Communication Partner interaction skills. Providing a descriptive overview, instructor modeling, guided practice, and role plays were the most frequently incorporated Communication Partner intervention activities within the included studies.

    Human beings subconsciously adapt their behaviors to a Communication Partner in order to make interactions run smoothly. In human-robot interactions, not only the human but also the robot is expected to adapt to its Partner. Thus, to facilitate human-robot interactions, a robot should be able to read subconscious comfort and discomfort signals from humans and adjust its behavior accordingly, just like a human would. However, most previous research works expected the human to consciously give feedback, which might interfere with the aim of interaction. We propose an adaptation mechanism based on reinforcement learning that reads subconscious body signals from a human Partner, and uses this information to adjust interaction distances, gaze meeting, and motion speed and timing in human-robot interactions. The mechanism uses gazing at the robot's face and human movement distance as subconscious body signals that indicate a human's comfort and discomfort. A pilot study with a humanoid robot that has ten interaction behaviors has been conducted. The study result of 12 subjects suggests that the proposed mechanism enables autonomous adaptation to individual preferences. Also, detailed discussion and conclusions are presented.
