Facets and Dimensions of Online Social Gambling: Refining Tools for Marketing Communications
Advances in Marketing Customer Relationship Management and E-Services, 2020Co-Authors: Jason Prasad, Wilson OzuemAbstract:While the concern with online gambling and its implications for marketing Communications scholars and practitioners has increased during the recent years, it remains an understudied area. Drawing on qualitative research, this chapter examines online social gambling and real money gambling marketing Communication practices and offers some insights on the development and implementation of effective marketing Communication Programmes. In contrast to existing studies, the chapter, in part, proposes integrative and higher levels of marketing Communication Programmes between online social gambling and real money gambling environments.

Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management, 2016Co-Authors: Tanja PerkoAbstract:Risk Communication about the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011 was often not transparent, timely, clear, nor factually correct. However, lessons related to risk Communication have been identified and some of them are already addressed in national and international Communication Programmes and strategies. Science Communication in the World - Science Communication in the World
2020Co-Authors: Bernard Schiele, Michel ClaessensAbstract:Over nearly three decades, science Communication has become established as a subject of teaching and research in universities across the world. Its standing as an academic discipline continues to be debated, but graduate degree Programmes and doctoral research in the field are increasing. Partly reflecting its inherent multi- and interdisciplinary content, science Communication is embedded in different institutions in different ways. These developments have been driven mainly by individual champions, but in some cases also by institutional and government policies. The diversity of science Communication Programmes reflects in part the various histories and institutional affiliations of the Programmes. The diversity can be seen as a sign of the subject’s vitality but it is also a condition of its vulnerability. Many science Communication teaching Programmes have given rise to consultancies, applied research, publishing and, perhaps most notably, doctoral research, but information from the promoters of science Communication Programmes indicates that some Programmes are particularly exposed to the rationalisation affecting higher education institutions in many countries. Science Communication’s position between and across disciplines and departments may mean it is not always well equipped to defend itself just when its need is most apparent

Communication Education in Malaysia: Early Days to Recent Years
Jurnal Komunikasi: Malaysian Journal of Communication, 2019Co-Authors: Syed Arabi IdidAbstract:This paper provides a historical perspective on Communication studies in Malaysia since its beginning in 1970. Government policies and support in addition to institutional factors shaped the development of Communication education in Malaysia. History is important for scholars of Communication to understand the foundations and influences that have shaped the development of the Communication field. The Communication Programmes in public universities were American oriented in the early years but took a Malaysian orientation later. This paper traces the first juncture when media education was first introduced, in the second juncture when it was accepted as an academic subject at the tertiary level, and the final juncture as it evolved into an internationally recognised field of study. This paper made references to newspaper and annual reports of Communication influences throughout the years but highlights the opinions and comments made by early educators through a series of interviews conducted between the years 2013 to 2017. The paper then discusses the growth of the Communication Programmes in the universities. To conclude, a discussion of future challenges in the Communication field are discussed. As Communication education in Malaysia progresses, universities will face increasing pressures in terms of funding, competition and loyalty to the foundations of the field. Keywords: Communication, history, university, academic, Malaysia.

THE PAST AND COMING Communication JOURNEY IN MALAYSIA
Jurnal Komunikasi: Malaysian Journal of Communication, 2014Co-Authors: Syed Arabi IdidAbstract:The paper recorded the tremendous changes in the academic and media landscape in tracing the development of Communication studies since its beginning in 1971. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was the first to offer the Communication programme followed by Universiti Technology MARA (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the other public universities. USM and UiTM benefitted from the American experts in the preparation of their academic Programmes. The early Communication Programmes in public universities were American oriented due to the presence of the local lecturers whose early post graduate training was from American universities. This paper traced the turnover of academic staff in “generational order” to record such changes had on the development of the programme. The first generation of lecturers in the Communication Programmes has been taken over by the third and fourth generation compared to the new universities that only recorded the first generation of lecturers. The paper then discussed the challenges faced by the Communication Programmes in public universities such as the growth of the Communication Programmes in private universities, the lack of academic staff, and the adoption of the new media technology.
