  • the evolving concept of patient centeredness in patient physician Communication Research
    Social Science & Medicine, 2013
Co-Authors: Hirono Ishikawa, Hideki Hashimoto, Takahiro Kiuchi
    Abstract:

Over the past few decades, the concept of “patient-centeredness” has been intensively studied in health Communication Research on patient-physician interaction. Despite its popularity, this concept has often been criticized for lacking a unified definition and operationalized measurement. This article reviews how health Communication Research on patient-physician interaction has conceptualized and operationalized patient-centered Communication based on four major theoretical perspectives in sociology (i.e., functionalism, conflict theory, utilitarianism, and social constructionism), and discusses the agenda for future Research in this field. Each theory addresses different aspects of the patient–physician relationship and Communication from different theoretical viewpoints. Patient-centeredness is a multifaceted construct with no single theory that can sufficiently define the whole concept. Different theoretical perspectives of patient-centered Communication can be selectively adopted according to the context and nature of problems in the patient–physician relationship that a particular study aims to explore. The present study may provide a useful framework: it offers an overview of the differing models of patient-centered Communication and the expected roles and goals in each model; it does so toward identifying a Communication model that fits the patient and the context and toward theoretically reconstructing existing measures of patient-centered Communication. Furthermore, although patient-centered Communication has been defined mainly from the viewpoint of physician's behaviors aimed at achieving patient-centered care, patient competence is also required for patient-centered Communication. This needs to be examined in current medical practice.

  • bringing local voices into community revitalization engaged Communication Research in urban planning
Journal of Applied Communication Research, 2017
Co-Authors: George Villanueva, Carmen Gonzalez, Minhee Son, Evelyn Moreno, Wenlin Liu, Sandra J Ballrokeach
    Abstract:

ABSTRACTThe need to better engage low-income communities affected by revitalization of the built environment has been well documented in urban planning. Guided by Communication infrastructure theory (CIT), this study presents a Research project that made concerted efforts at engaging neighborhoods of Northeast Los Angeles that are experiencing rapid gentrification. The project was a partnership with a multi-sector collaborative working on the revitalization of the L.A. River and its surrounding communities. This paper specifically demonstrates how CIT's social ecological orientation was applied to seek input on L.A. River and community revitalization from storytelling networks made up of residents, small businesses, and local media. We also examine the impact of this engaged Research on the organizational partners of the collaborative, and their views on community engagement in revitalization. Lastly, we discuss how the lessons learned broadly speak to future opportunities and challenges that aim for comm...

  • understanding Communication ecologies to bridge Communication Research and community action
Journal of Applied Communication Research, 2013
Co-Authors: Garrett M Broad, Sandra J Ballrokeach, Katherine Ognyanova, Benjamin Stokes, Tania Picasso, George Villanueva
    Abstract:

This paper describes the Research process that informed the development of the MetaConnects platform, a university-based engaged scholarship initiative that connected Communication Researchers with community-based social change organizers. The paper outlines the investigation of community organizers' Communication practices and demonstrates the utility that these findings had for the work of the practitioners. It also explores the lessons learned by the academic Researchers in terms of the potentials and limitations of their engaged approach. The work highlights the theoretical and practical significance of Communication ecologies—a term that refers to the networks of Communication connections that groups or individuals depend upon in order to achieve a goal. It argues that, for academic Researchers, understanding the Communication ecologies of community-based practitioners can be an essential way to design optimally functioning engaged scholarship initiatives. An understanding of Communication ecologies ...

  • a framework for strategic Communication Research a call for synthesis and consilience
International Journal of Strategic Communication, 2016
    Co-Authors: Howard Nothhaft
    Abstract:

ABSTRACTThis essay suggests that the conceptualization of strategic Communication as a field uniting several disciplines was an important step forward, but progress in absolute terms has been disappointing so far. Individual Researchers open up new avenues of exploration and regularly arrive at answers to questions internally consistent with their respective perspectives. But the body of reasonably verified scientific knowledge that goes substantially beyond common sense remains underdeveloped. The author argues that biologist Edward O. Wilson identified the key characteristic of progressing fields correctly as consilience, i.e., the commitment to the unity of knowledge from physics to chemistry to biology and beyond: “a seamless web of cause and effect.” The article proposes that strategic Communications Research follow Wilson’s program, as other disciplines have done. For the field to mature, leading Researchers need to work towards a consilient synthesis, i.e., a theoretical framework that contains non...

  • vectors into the future of mass and interpersonal Communication Research big data social media and computational social science
    Human Communication Research, 2017
    Co-Authors: Joseph N Cappella
    Abstract:

Simultaneous developments in big data, social media, and computational social science have set the stage for how we think about and understand interpersonal and mass Communication. This article explores some of the ways that these developments generate 4 hypothetical “vectors”—directions—into the next generation of Communication Research. These vectors include developments in network analysis, modeling interpersonal and social influence, recommendation systems, and the blurring of distinctions between interpersonal and mass audiences through narrowcasting and broadcasting. The methods and Research in these arenas are occurring in areas outside the typical boundaries of the Communication discipline but engage classic, substantive questions in mass and interpersonal Communication.
