    Abstract:

    This paper reflects on the principal lessons from ten years of Work with rural communities on natural resource management, carried out through a non-governmental organization, Programa de Accion Forestal Tropical. The Community Work experiences originate from 24 small projects in 14 small communities in seven states of southern Mexico. The Work emphasized a holistic and integral approach, known as social learning. Two elements required for Community Work were analysed: theoretical concepts and practical applications. The theoretical concepts are: dialogue, empowerment, plurality, validity of local knowledge and co-responsibility. The practical applications are: diversification of activities in projects, training, monitoring and feedback. Analysis revealed the need to pay attention to the above social elements in the Community to achieve resource management, and emphasized the social learning process.     Abstract:

    This article reports on the findings of a research project that focuses upon the experience of deaf students in higher education, in particular social Work and youth and Community Work training. Central to these courses is the notion of anti-discriminatory practice, and the development of skills in Working with people. However, it cannot be assumed that such courses offer a positive experience to disadvantaged people, and deaf students participating in the project report a general dissatisfaction with the courses they attended. The project was designed to involve deaf people from the outset, and to seek the views of deaf students on what they considered to be important about their experiences in social Work and youth and Community Work training. Respondents identified three major areas of difficulty: poor support services, a lack of deaf awareness amongst students and tutors, and, an absence of deaf issues in course curricula.   • Factors of Training Practice in Social Community Work: Assessment of Practice Tasks

    Abstract:

    The purpose of the research is to identify the factors which enable or impede students to perform tasks in the practice of social Community Work. 72 competence portfolios of 4th-year continuing studies students at Mykolas Romeris University, who had performed social Community Work practice, were analysed in the research. The object of the research was the factors that influence the performance of the tasks of the training practice in social Community Work. In the first part of the paper the subject “Social Work Practice of the MRU social Work study program” is presented. In the second part of the paper, the tasks orientated towards activities in the Community implemented by the students (Community analysis, assessment of Community needs, a Community-designated event) and the factors that influenced their performance are introduced. The third part of the paper presents tasks directed towards organisation of training (competences portfolio, weekly activity plans, weekly activity reports and reflections). The research method is qualitative analysis of the content. The research has established that the tasks which relate to specific activities in the Community (Community analysis, assessment of Community needs, a Community event) gives sense to the activity, provide the possibility to know the factual object of social Work. The research has established that the tasks which relate to presentation for assessment of the activity in the Community (competences portfolio, weekly activity plans and reports, practice journal) help students to focus on the result, develops skills of critical and reflexive thinking, encourages them to analyse the process of learning.
