  • Teenage Mothers' Experiences of Formal Support Services
    Journal of Social Policy, 2009
    Co-Authors: Elizabeth Yardley
    Abstract:

AbstractThis article explores Support Services for teenage mothers. It draws upon empirical evidence from a wider study into the experiences of teenage mothers in the Midlands area of the UK, in which 20 young women who had given birth as teenagers participated in semi-structured interviews about their experiences of Support Services. The findings are used to make suggestions as to policy regarding Support for teenage mothers, arguing that the diverse nature of Support needs must be taken into account when designing Support Services. The article concludes that more attention should be paid to the possibilities of the group mode of Support, rather than focusing on Support delivered on a one-to-one basis, and, in addition, the functions of Support Services, beyond encouraging re-engagement in education, employment and training, need to be valued more significantly.

  • Teenage mothers' experiences of stigma and formal Support Services
    2007
    Co-Authors: Elizabeth Yardley
    Abstract:

This research has two focal points: experiences of stigma and experiences of formal Support Services among teenage mothers. Twenty teenage mothers were interviewed in depth, ten from a one-to-one Support service, and ten from a group based Support service. Contributions to knowledge consisted of the following. First, regarding experiences of stigma, this research integrated concepts from the social psychology literature and established the effects of stigma which are experienced by teenage mothers, offering reasons for the same. Additionally, further coping mechanisms in response to being stigmatized were discovered and grouped into two new headings: active and passive coping mechanisms. It is acknowledged that for a minority of participants, stigma does have negative effects, however, the majority experiences no such serious negative effects. Secondly, regarding experiences of Support Services, this research was able to directly compare one-to-one with group based Support for teenage mothers. Knowledge was unearthed as to influential factors in the selection of a mode of Support and the functions of each of the modes of Support, which were categorised under headings for ease of comparison. It was established that there is indeed a link between these two research foci in that both the one-to-one and group based Support Services fulfil a stigma management function, in which teenage mothers discuss the phenomenon, share experiences and offer advice to others. However, it was also established that this function is of minor importance compared to the other functions fulfilled by the Support Services.

  • Evaluation of employment-Support Services for adults with autism spectrum disorder
    Autism, 2017
Co-Authors: David Nicholas, Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, Jennifer D. Zwicker, Margaret Clarke, Ramesh Lamsal, Kevin P. Stoddart, Cynthia Carroll, Barbara Muskat, Margaret Spoelstra, Katelyn Lowe
    Abstract:

The employment rate among persons with autism spectrum disorder has been noted as unacceptably low. Employment-Support Services are increasingly linked to the potential for favorable job outcomes, yet little is known about employment-Support practices and the outcome of these interventions. This mixed-methods study examined employment-Support resources for persons with autism spectrum disorder. An online survey was completed by 137 senior clinicians or administrators in employment-Support programs in Canada. Additionally, 122 follow-up interviews were conducted with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (n = 71) and their parents/caregivers (n = 51). Findings indicate that the quality and beneficial impact of employment-Support Services for adults with autism spectrum disorder may be more favorably perceived by employment-Support personnel than by individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families. Furthermore, employment-Support personnel were more disparaging about autism spectrum disorder...

  • applying analytics to improve hardware and software maintenance Support Services
IEEE International Conference on Services Computing, 2015
    Co-Authors: Zhou Xin, Soumitra Sarkar
    Abstract:

Organizations providing large scale software and hardware maintenance Support Services typically capture detailed metrics of each service request (SR) for a customer. Examples of such metrics include the time taken to resolve the problem, success of the resolution, escalations across levels of Support, field engineer site visit statistics, and parts replacement data -- the latter two for hardware maintenance only. For some SRs, targeted customer surveys may be conducted to elicit feedback about how effectively the end-to-end problem resolution process was performed. Application of analytics to such data to enable continuous improvement of the operational efficiencies of providing maintenance Services is an open area of research. This paper describes the authors' experience with several analytics projects in this domain. Improvement of maintenance Support Services can lead to faster and better problem resolution, leading to reduced down time and an increase in the overall resiliency of a computing environment.
