Simultaneous removal of nano-ZnO and Zn2+ based on transportation character of nano-ZnO by coagulation: Enteromorpha polysaccharide compound polyaluminum chloride.
Environmental science and pollution research international, 2016Co-Authors: Jianzhang Sun, Baoyu Gao, Shuang Zhao, Qinyan Yue, Yan Wang, Siqi LiuAbstract:It is confirmed that nano-ZnO (nZnO) has impact on environment and is considered as heavy metal pollutants. It is a new technology that applies coagulation process to simultaneous removal of the nanoparticles and heavy metals. Environmental chemical behavior of ZnO in water, such as the dispersion, aggregation, Sedimentation, and dissolution of releasing metal ions, has been systematically studied in this paper. The result shows that three kinds of nZnO state such as Compacted Sediment, suspended, and released is separately 36.54 %, 40.61 %, and 22.86 %. Enteromorpha polysaccharide (Ep) was used together with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in surface water purification. In order to study the mechanism of simultaneous removal of residual nZnO particles and Zn2+, coagulation process was further applied in this study. The evolution of flocs size, strength, and recovery ability and fractal structure due to Ep addition was systematically studied in this paper. Results indicated that PAC-Ep was efficient in removing nZnO and Zn2+, which leads to more than 95 % particles, 50-60 % natural organic matter (NOM) removed, and 35 % of resolved heavy metal ion adsorbing-chelation. Ep was an efficient coagulant aid in enhancing performance of coagulation and generating flocs with bigger sizes, faster growth rates, and higher recovery abilities. Additionally, the flocs formed by PAC-Ep presented a much looser structure than flocs formed only by PAC. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Calibrated density profiles of Caribbean mangrove peat sequences from computed tomography for assessment of peat preservation, compaction, and impacts on sea-level reconstructions.
Quaternary Research, 2018Co-Authors: Marguerite A. Toscano, Juan L. Gonzalez, Kevin R.t. WhelanAbstract:Oceanic mangroves accumulate peat with sea-level rise without terrestrial Sediment inputs, but fossil peat’s elevation as a tide-range limited sea-level indicator is assumed to be affected by compaction. Despite assumption of decomposition, compression, and dewatering, pure Rhizophora mangle peat appears coarse, water-saturated, and loose even at depth. Calibrated peat densities from computed tomography (CT) and petrologic analysis allow quantitative assessment of compaction in continuous peats from Florida (6 m thick), Belize (12 m thick), and Panama (3.5 m thick). Pure peat exhibits voids at all depths and >80% water contents. CT density does not increase with depth; bulk densities are low, minimally variable, and trend-free. Higher CT-density intervals coincide with compositional changes (Sediment, coral). CT of peat buried under Sediment shows a shift to higher densities. CT of air-dried continuous peat shows uncompressed fine and coarse roots and voids, with negative densities indicative of air in place of interstitial water. Peat’s high water content and hydraulic conductivity prevent dewatering and compaction, hypothetically maintaining original sea-level indicative elevations at intermediate depths. Non-Compacted, Sediment-free, offshore peats can provide a continuous proxy for reconstructing the record of sea-level rise at any site, if depositional, disturbance, and geochemical and biotic processes affecting 14 C ages are also assessed.

Seismic imaging of the transitional crust across the northeastern margin of the South China Sea
Tectonophysics, 2005Co-Authors: Tan K. Wang, Ming-kai Chen, Chao-shing Lee, Kanyuan XiaAbstract:Abstract Crustal structure across the passive continental margin of the northeastern South China Sea (SCS) is presented based on a deep seismic survey cooperated between Taiwan and China in August 2001. Reflection data collected from a 48-hydrophone streamer and the vertical component of refraction/reflection data recorded at 11 ocean-bottom seismometers along a NW–SE profile are integrated to image the upper (1.6–2.4 km/s), lower (2.5–2.9 km/s), and Compacted (3–4.5 km/s) Sediment, the upper (4.5–5.5 km/s), middle (5.5–6.5 km/s) and lower (6.5–7.5 km/s) crystalline crust successively. The velocity model shows that the thickness (0.5–3 km) and the basement of the Compacted Sediment are strongly varied due to intrusion of the magma and igneous rocks after seafloor spreading of the SCS. Furthermore, several volcanoes and igneous rocks in the upper/middle crust (7–10 km thick) and a high velocity layer (0–5 km thick) in the lower crust of the model are identified as the ocean–continent transition (OCT) below the lower slope in the northeastern margin of the SCS. A thin continent NW of the OCT and a thick oceanic crust SE of the OCT in the continental margin of the northeastern SCS are also imaged, but these transitional crusts cannot be classified as the OCT due to their crustal thickness and the limited amount of the volcano, the magma and the high velocity layer. The extended continent, next to the gravity low and a sag zone extended from the SW Taiwan Basin, may have resulted from subduction of the Eurasian Plate beneath the Manila Trench whereas the thick oceanic crust may have been due to the excess volcanism and the late magmatic underplating in the oceanic crust after seafloor spreading of the SCS.
