    Abstract:

    Competency-Based Education is a concept and Educational model that is consistent with the idea and guidelines of reforming our vocational Education and higher Education issued by State Council and Ministry of Education.The similarities and differences in connotation and denotation among the concepts of Competency,ability,and innate quality were explored,the nature of Competency-Based Education in nursing was examined by analyzing the context in which Competency-Based Education was initiated and the evolution process of its meanings.The procedure to deliver Competency-Based Education was introduced,and it included detailed information of nursing core Competency identification,principles in curriculum development as well as course and teaching design,and common evaluation methods used in Competency-Based Education.

    Abstract:

    Recent efforts to improve medical Education include adopting a new framework Based on 6 broad competencies defined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. In this article, the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Education Redesign Task Force II examines the advantages and challenges of a Competency-Based Educational framework for medical residents. Efforts to refine specific competencies by developing detailed mile-stones are described, and examples of training program initiatives using a Competency-Based approach are presented. Meeting the challenges of a Competency-Based framework and supporting these Educational innovations require a robust faculty development program. Challenges to Competency-Based Education include teaching and evaluating the competencies related to practice-Based learning and improvement and systems-Based practice, as well as implementing a flexible time frame to achieve competencies. However, the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Education Redesign Task Force II does not favor reducing internal medicine training to less than 36 months as part of Competency-Based Education. Rather, the 36-month time frame should allow for remediation to address deficiencies in achieving competencies and for diverse enrichment experiences in such areas as quality of care and practice improvement for residents who have demonstrated skills in all required competencies.

    Background As Education in the United States pushes for accountability, Educational programs across the country are attempting to find innovative ways to measure student learning outcomes. Competency-Based Education is one model favorable among many academic institutions and accreditation agencies because it links theory to practice (Clark, Competency-Based Education for social work: Evaluation and curriculum issues, 1976; Hall & Jones, Competency-Based Education: A process for the improvement of Education, 1976; Johnstone & Soares, Change, 46, 2014, 12; Pace, Competency Education series: Policy brief one, 2013). The research indicates that there is no standard definition of Competency-Based Education and agreement on the criteria that encompass this model (Book, All hands on deck: Ten lessons from early adopters of Competency-Based Education, 2014; Le, Wolfe, & Steinberg, The past and the promise: Today's Competency Education movement, 2014; Riesman, On competence: A critical analysis of competence-Based reforms in higher Education, 1979). Methods This research reviewed the literature on Competency-Based Education and interviewed key informants from various disciplines to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. Results This research constructs an operational definition of Competency-Based Education and then applies this definition to build an assessment tool to determine the extent that Competency-Based Education exists in an academic program.
