The purpose of this paper is to present a scoring rubric that has been successfully used to grade and track students' knowledge development as they progress through a Computer Ethics course. Although this paper focuses upon a specific rubric, general principles will be emphasized to show how scoring rubrics can be used across different courses.

An online, asynchronous course on Computer Ethics has unique strengths and weaknesses compared to a face-to-face classroom course. This paper describes several ways to exploit the strengths of asynchronous pedagogy when teaching Computer Ethics, and suggests ways to deemphasize the weaknesses. Anecdotes are given from the authors experience in teaching Computer Ethics online to Computer science majors.

An ethical assessment of Computer Ethics using scenario approach

In this case, Computer Ethics is one of the major issues in information technology (IT) and information system (IS). The ethical behaviour of IT students and professionals need to be studied in an attempt to reduce many unethical practices such as software piracy, hacking, and software intellectual property violations. This paper attempts to address Computer-related scenarios that can be used to examine the Computer Ethics. The Computer-related scenario consists of a short description of an ethical situation whereby the subject of the study such as IT professionals or students, then rate the Ethics of the scenario, namely attempt to identify the ethical issues involved. This paper also reviews several measures of Computer Ethics in different setting. The perceptions of various dimensions of ethical behaviour in IT that are related to the circumstances of the ethical scenario are also presented.

Exploring Computer Ethics issues in Malaysia

The use of IT has provided advantages for people, organizations, and society as a whole. Nevertheless, the widespread and rapid use of IT in society has exacerbated existing ethical issues or dilemmas, and also led to the emergence of new ethical issues such as unauthorized access, software piracy, internet pornography, privacy protection, information gaps, and many others. This paper presents a pilot study using a questionnaire administered to Malaysian students of higher education. Although there are many Computer Ethics issues, we confine our study of ethical issues to three main issues, namely accuracy, privacy and pirating of intellectual property. Several Computer Ethics scenarios that relate to the accuracy, privacy and intellectual property are also present in this paper.

Computer security and Computer Ethics awareness: A component of management information system

This exploratory study examined the Computer security and Computer Ethics awareness among students (Computer science majors and non-majors) taking Computer science courses at College of Science and Technology (CST), University Technology Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur. Based on an empirical survey of 245 university student users we identified the satisfactory awareness level of Computer security and Ethics of the students. After analyzing survey data obtained from 245 students in CST, the results reported that Computer science majors were slightly more aware of Computer security and Computer Ethics than non-majors. The implications of these and other findings are discussed.

Perspective on Computer Ethics and security : understanding university students

Students are often perceived to have little understanding of the ethical issues associated with the use of Computers, such as privacy, property, accuracy, accessibility and social impact. Computer Ethics is one of the issues that comes with Computer technology. It can be defined as a category of professional Ethics similar to medical, legal, teaching and accounting Ethics. According to Langford (1995) Ethics encourage individuals to think through their attitudes and beliefs and thus be able to decide in advance whether their opinions are appropriate or not, and once this is decided, individuals should then be prepared to accept full responsibility for their actions. Computer security refers to the protection of data (information security), networks and computing power. Malaysian government has shown its commitment in the use of information and communication technology for national development and is moving towards a knowledge-based society. This is witnessed through the huge national budget allocation for information and communication technology development. Nevertheless, the negative impact of technology cannot be denied. Understanding Computer Ethics in security element is an important feature. This provides an avenue to further understand the issues related to Computer Ethics and security. Few Malaysian universities offer selective course related to Computer Ethics and security. The student population therefore is rather unfamiliar and uncertain with the idea that ethical and security matters might be of importance to them in their future career. Given that today’s undergraduate students are the employees of tomorrow and if the Ethics they have as undergraduates shape their behaviours in the future, then we need to understand and address this gap in students’ ethical behaviours before they enter the working arena. Further, even though the literature contains a variety of research on Ethics and information and communication technology, there has been a lack of empirical research on studying student perceptions’ of ethical issues in using information and communication technology, particularly in Malaysia. This chapter describes the undergraduate students’ perceptions of Computer Ethics and security within the academic setting. The rest of the chapter is organised as follows. Section 2 discusses the background. In Section 3, the undergraduate students’ perceptions are described and discussed, and Section 4 presents the conclusions.

ISTAS - Curriculum issues and controversies in Computer Ethics instruction
Proceedings International Symposium on Technology and Society, 2001Co-Authors: H.t. TavaniAbstract:This paper examines two controversial issues currently associated with Computer Ethics instruction. First, the question whether Computer Ethics courses should be taught by philosophy faculty or by Computer science faculty is considered, and arguments advanced by proponents on each side of the debate are critically analyzed. We then consider controversies surrounding the implementation of certain "knowledge units" on social and ethical issues in the Computer Science Curriculum, as recently proposed by the IEEE-CS/ACM Task force on Computing curricula. Finally, an interdisciplinary model is suggested that would enable instructors to deliver Computer Ethics courses in a way that integrates certain methodological insights from the disciplines of philosophy and Computer science, as well as from the relevant social sciences.

Modern scholarship usually approves deontological and utilitarian Ethics as appropriate to Computer Ethics, while classical theories of Ethics, such as virtue Ethics, are usually neglected as anachronistic and unsuitable to the information era and ICT industry. During past decades, an Aristotelian form of virtue Ethics has been revived in modern philosophical enquiries with serious attempts for application to Computer Ethics and cyberEthics. In this paper, the author argues that current trends and behaviours in online communication require an Ethics of self-care found in Plotinus’ self-centred virtue Ethics theory. The paper supports the position that Plotinus’ virtue Ethics of intellectual autonomy and self-determination is relevant to cyberEthics discussions involved in Computer education and online communication.
