Understanding the Behavioral Intention to Report Unethical Information Technology Practices: The Role of Machiavellianism, Gender, and Computer Expertise

Because end-users and Computer experts are the conduit to an ethical organizational environment, their intention to report unethical IT-related practices plays a critical role in protecting intellectual property and privacy rights. Using the survey methodology, this article investigates the relationship between willingness to report intellectual property and privacy violations and Machiavellianism, gender and Computer literacy in the form of programming experience. We found that gender and Computer Expertise interact with Machiavellianism to influence individuals’ intention of reporting unethical IT practices. This study helps us to improve our understanding of the emergent ethical issues existing in the IT-enabled decision environment.

Development and validation of a Computer Expertise questionnaire for older adults

Due to demographic changes, the older adult will become increasingly important as a potential user. However, there is a lack of instruments for the assessment of Computer Expertise in older adults, especially for novice users with restricted prior Computer knowledge. A Computer Expertise (CE) questionnaire for older adults was developed, analysed (Study I) and validated (Study II). Item-analysis showed that the CE-questionnaire is particularly appropriate for the Computer knowledge level of older adults and measures Computer Expertise sufficiently. Furthermore, it was found that Computer experience (in terms of frequency of Computer usage) is a poor predictor of actual Computer performance, which has important implications for the theoretical conceptualization of Computer Expertise and its assessment.

Understanding age differences in PDA acceptance and performance

According to the technology acceptance model (TAM), perceived ease of use and usefulness are assumed to be strong determinants of the actual and successful utilization of technology. However, the relationship between the acceptance of technical devices and their successful utilization (i.e. performance) is not completely understood. In this study, users' attitudes towards technology and their performance when interacting with a Computer simulated PDA device were examined. Moreover, the moderating role of individual variables like age, gender, subjective technical confidence, and Computer Expertise in the relationship between technical performance and acceptance was analyzed. The results showed significant associations between performance and TAM factors. However, this interrelation was much stronger for the older group, especially between performance and the ease of use. The factors Computer Expertise and technical self-confidence played a minor role. Gender effects on technical self-confidence and TAM factors were identified, although they did not affect performance. Future research should focus on training formats for the older age group, which facilitate a successful interaction with technical devices.

However, the question if mobile devices address the usability demands of older users is still unsettled. This paper reports the findings of a series of studies that examined the performance of younger and older adults when using personal data management software applications of a PDA. In order to learn about the ageing impact, the influence of user characteristics like spatial and memory abilities, the subjective technical confidence and Computer-Expertise on performance outcomes were analysed. Beyond quantitative performance measurements, the major shortcomings in interface design were identified. Results showed that older users reached lower performance outcomes. Even young adults did not reach a perfect performance level, hinting again at shortcomings in the design of PDA applications. Overall, the findings demonstrate the need to include user characteristics in interface design.

What's the Point of Using Computers? The Development of Young People's Computer Expertise in the Home
New Media & Society, 2001Co-Authors: Keri Facer, Rosamund Sutherland, Ruth Furlong, John FurlongAbstract:Despite the column inches and policy statements dedicated to arguing that young people need to use Computers, very little is known about the reasons why young people themselves might value and acquire Computer Expertise. Drawing on a survey of 855 children and 16 detailed case studies of children's use of Computers at home this article explores the influence of software design, family discourses, peer group culture and gender identity on children's perception of the potential uses and benefits of ICT Expertise. The article goes on to argue that young people value and acquire Computer Expertise primarily in order to achieve practical objectives and in relation to the construction of (gendered) peer group identities. Given these findings the article questions the continued emphasis in educational policy on the acquisition of decontextualized information and communications technology (ICT) `skills' within a rationale of future relevance to the workplace.
