    Abstract:

    Our objective with this study is to compare three distinct periods of CPR development. We contrast the original concerns regarding Computer/information systems Personnel from the early days of computing with emergent concerns reflecting the accumulation of evolution of both computing technology and IS management in the subsequent years. In order to accomplish our goal, we review the proceedings of the Computer Personnel Research (CPR) group analyzing the very first proceedings (1962), the next five proceedings (1964 to 1969), and the most recent five proceedings (2006 to 2011). Our intention is to present and analyze a broad picture of trends illustrating them with vignettes from practice and observations derived from particular studies. Finally, we identify and comment on the array of themes and topics that the CPR conferences have addressed in the most recent five years.

    Abstract:

    Welcome to the 45th Annual Computer Personnel Research Conference -- ACM SIGMIS CPR 2007. For forty-five years, the CPR conference has presented quality research on the themes of managing the information technology (IT) workforce. This year's theme is the increasingly global nature of this workforce. The IT Workforce has rapidly evolved into a diverse, dynamic, and fluid international marketplace of knowledge workers and commoditized IT services. Organizational information technologies and services are now regularly provided not only by internal IT units, but also by globally-located providers of information technologies, systems, and services as well as a combination of local and global workforce participants. The changing composition of such a global workforce has implications for both the research and practice of information systems management. Forty-nine papers were submitted to the conference and 37 were accepted. The papers, panels, and tutorials in this year's conference cover topics such as managing teams of IT workers in different countries, the economics and politics of such arrangements, and traditional CPR topics such as skill sets needed for IT workers and the IT career path.

    A survey of perceptions of I.S. Computer Personnel managers, analysts, programmer/analysts and application programmers-was conducted in Japan, using the JDS-DP II, a modification of the job diagnostic survey instrument. Data were collected on 15 job variables, related to four motivation aspects: job components, satisfaction levels, need for growth/achievement and goal participation/feedback. The results were compared to those of a similar survey for the same job types in the United States. The survey revealed that the work itself was ranked highest among 11 motivating factors, for both countries, In two job categories, middle management and analysts, Japanese respondents had responses significantly different from their U.S. counterparts. On the other dimensions the responses in Japan were similar to those in the United States. Cultural factors that might have affected the survey results are discussed. >

    A survey of perceptions of IS Personnel – managers, technical specialists and programmer/analysts – was conducted by the Association for Technical Information in Spain, using the JDS/DP, a modification of the job diagnostic survey instrument. Data were collected on fifteen job variables, related to four motivation aspects: job components, satisfaction levels, need for growth/achievement and goal participation/feedback. The results were compared with those of a similar survey for the same job types in Finland. Results were also compared with the norms developed for Computer Personnel in the USA. The survey revealed that Personnel attracted to the Computer field have a high need for growth and a low need for social interaction. It also revealed that the work itself was ranked highest among eleven motivating factors. For both Spain and Finland, the technical specialist job had a mis-match between the job's motivating potential and the employee's need for growth, compared with similar Personnel in the USA. By examining the core job dimensions, managers can redesign the job to produce a match between these two major components of motivation.

    The authors describe a recent survey of American association of artificial intelligence members, which revealed motivational problems among managers. This situation was in contrast to high levels of motivation of artificial intelligence system designers. The survey results for AI system designers are compared to those of managers, and then the AI managerial data are compared to the US motivational norms for managers of Computer Personnel. Causes for the problems are discussed and suggestions provided. >
