    Living Labs is a rather new research area and phenomena that introduces new ways of managing innovation processes. The underlying idea is that people’s ideas, experiences, and knowledge, as well as their daily needs of support from products, services, or applications, should be the starting point in innovation. This paper illuminates experiences and accumulated knowledge to the area of Concept Design in an innovation process within a Living Lab. FormIT, a methodology developed for innovation processes within Living Labs is introduced through an illustration of how it has been utilised in a case. The experiences and the method are related to characteristics of Living Labs, and the paper closes with some concluding remarks in relation to Concept Design in a Living Lab.

    Abstract:

    As an offshore structure for exploitation of oil and gas in deep sea,the Spar platform has developed quickly during the last decade.This paper presents a preliminary study on the Concept Design method and process of the Spar platform,as well as theoretical and numerical analysis of its hydrodynamics.As an example,the Cell-Truss Spar platform Concept,put forward by the State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering in SJTU,is brought in.Generally speaking,two aspects are involved during the Concept Design: one deals with the Design method and structure form,and the other concerns the hydrodynamic behavior.Many effects may have to be taken into account during the Design process,which can be described as an interactive flow.

  • Weaving a Digital Thread into Concept Design

    Abstract:

    During Concept Design of a space system, engineers explore many alternative Concepts of operation, requirements, and Design solutions. Changes to all these attributes are made frequently. The models that represent the system's definition, properties, and performance must be integrated in a way that not only captures these key attributes in a consistent manner across the various model domains, but they must also be agile to allow for frequent changes to the Concept Design. Changes should propagate throughout the entire federation of interconnected models and maintain Design consistency. To accomplish this, the models and tools used by different disciplines need to “talk” to each other to share data in a way that ultimately leads to informed decision-making. A model framework is presented that describes how interconnected descriptive and analytical models can be used for Concept Design. The analytical models are implemented by tools that help engineers visualize trade space options, analyze candidate Designs, and compare results against requirements. These connected performance models also provide holistic system analyses used to verify that a proposed system Concept Design meets mission requirements. The outputs of these analytical models are input to a descriptive SysML model in the form of constraints that ultimately verify that a system's mission requirements are met, thus providing a traceable framework, or digital thread, which spans across disparate functional areas.

  • Concept Design Using Model Based Systems Engineering

    Abstract:

    The value of analytical modeling when performing Concept Design cannot be overstated. Using a concurrent engineering process and interconnected analytical tools to estimate system size, mass, power, performance, resilience, and cost, engineers can rapidly develop Concepts to perform feasibility assessments and configuration trade studies. Perhaps less clear is of the value of descriptive modeling offered by Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practice applied to Concept Design. Currently there are precious few examples of acquisition programs implementing MBSE across all life cycle phases, and fewer examples of programs that use it during Concept development. Concept developers use analytical tools to analyze candidate systems during this phase, but they also need to deal with other aspects of system Design such as mission objectives, system requirements, Concept of operations, system architecture, and function allocation. These attributes may all be captured and interconnected in a descriptive system model, which is at the very core of MBSE practice. It is shown here how system developers can create and use such a descriptive system model in conjunction with their analytical concurrent engineering tools to rapidly develop Concept Designs.
