Different Interpretations of the Concept of Education As a Public Good in International Discourse
Reframing Education as a Public and Common Good, 2019Co-Authors: Rita LocatelliAbstract:This chapter provides an analysis of Education development discourse with regard to the use of the Concept of Education as a public good by the main actors involved in international Education policy: UNESCO, UNICEF, human rights treaty bodies, and other international and non-governmental organizations. It also identifies the multiple, yet interrelated, Conceptualizations of Education as a public good by different international actors. These correspond respectively to an overall humanistic and integrated vision of Education which is at the core of defining and preserving those collective interests of society (policy focus) which are the ultimate responsibility of the State (principle of governance). It is argued that these three interpretations represent three different closely interrelated facets of the same principle.

Reframing Education as a Public and Common Good, 2019Co-Authors: Rita LocatelliAbstract:The fifth chapter illustrates the peculiar nature of Education and outlines two different approaches, one that puts greater emphasis on the public-goods and the other on the private-goods aspects related to market-based approaches to Education. It provides insight into how the principle of Education as a public good can be reinterpreted and outlines the policy implications with regard to the different functions of the State by taking into consideration different combinations of lower and higher levels of democracy and of the involvement of private actors. This chapter identifies “criteria of publicness” that refer to both formal and functional conditions, and ultimately reframes the theoretical debate on Education in the public sphere.

Education and school leavers unemployment saga implication for Educational planning in nigeria
Educational Research Review, 2017Co-Authors: Aja Sunday NwambamAbstract:This paper reviewed the relationship between the type of Education and school leavers’ unemployment with the view to highlighting its implications for Educational planning in Nigeria. The Concept of Education, reasons for steady increase in the number of unemployed school leavers and what to do in order to curb educated unemployment were discussed. The reviewed works show that the rapid extension of formal Education as a result of the Universal Basic Education and other forms of free Education schemes of federal and state governments in Nigeria has itself been a significant factor in the growth of widening youth unemployment in Nigeria. The review however noted that school leavers’ unemployment can be reduced by making classroom Education relevant to the society in which pupils and students build their careers. Another way of curbing youth unemployment is that government programmes for out-of-school Education should be more attuned to the economic realities of the state or country as the case may be. The implication of this to the Education planners is that they should be more proactive in identifying the unemployment problems, analyzing their relationships to the Education system and the economy so that they can determine policy options. optimal capacitor placement in radial distribution systems using teaching learning based optimization
International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems, 2014Co-Authors: Sneha Sultana, Provas Kumar RoyAbstract:Abstract This paper presents teaching learning based optimization (TLBO) approach to minimize power loss and energy cost by optimal placement of capacitors in radial distribution systems. The proposed algorithm is based on two basic Concept of Education namely teaching phase and learning phase. In first phase, learners improve their knowledge or ability through the teaching methodology of teacher and in second part learners increase their knowledge by interactions among themselves. To check the feasibility, the proposed method is applied on standard 22, 69, 85 and 141 bus radial distribution systems. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate that the proposed TLBO can obtain better quality solution than many existing techniques like genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), direct search algorithm (DSA) and mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach.

BeckettAbstract:Abstract In this article, I argue that Paulo Freire’s liberatory Conception of Education is interesting, challenging, even transforming because central to it are important aspects of Education which other philosophers marginalise. I also argue that Freire’s critics are right when they claim that he paid insufficient attention to another important aspect of Education. Finally, I argue for a Conception of Education which takes account of the strengths and at the same time overcomes the limitations of Freire’s liberatory Conception.

BeckettAbstract:In this essay Kelvin Beckett argues that Richard Peters's major work on Education, Ethics and Education, belongs on a short list of important texts we can all share. He argues this not because of the place it has in the history of philosophy of Education, as important as that is, but because of the contribution it can still make to the future of the discipline. The limitations of Peters's analysis of the Concept of Education in his chapter on “Criteria of Education” are well known. In the chapter on “Education as Initiation,” however, Peters offered a synthetic sketch of Education that, Beckett argues, points us toward a more comprehensive definition of Education, one which, he maintains, can be accepted by all philosophers, regardless of the tradition they work in.

the efficient virtual learning environment a case study of web 2 0 tools and windows live spaces

The aim of this research is to integrate Web 2.0 tools, which are sparsely found on the internet (each tool is on a different site), into Education and see if it positively affects learning; also, students' opinions about this formed environment will be sought. The study sample consists of 55 students, from whom data was collected. Descriptive statistics were calculated and a paired sample t-test was used, in order to compare pre-experience test and post-experience test means. The univariate of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare group means. Positive opinions of students show that the use of the WLS environment within Web 2.0 tools brings a new dimension to distance learning. This paper is orientated towards anyone interested in social networks and Web 2.0 tools and individuals who may be interested in this includes teachers, instructors, students and Educational organisations, such as universities and schools. It may also be useful to those who have a general interest in social networks and Web 2.0 tools.
