We show that our model preserves the capabilities of AspectJ-like languages, while improving the Conceptual Integrity of the language model and the compositionality of modules. The improvement in Conceptual Integrity is manifested by the reduction of specialized constructs in favor of uniform orthogonal constructs. The enhancement in compositionality is demonstrated by better modularization of integration and higher-order crosscutting concerns.

We call our new module construct the classpect. We make three basic claims. First, we can realize a unified design without significantly compromising the expressiveness of current aspect languages. Second, such a design improves the Conceptual Integrity of the programming model. Third, it significantly improves the compositionality of aspect modules, expanding the program design space from the two-layered model of AspectJ-like languages to include hierarchical structures. To support these claims, we present the design and implementation of Eos-U, an AspectJ-like language based on C# that supports classpects as the basic unit of modularity. We show that Eos-U supports layered designs in which classpects separate integration concerns flexibly at multiple levels of composition. The underpinnings of our design include support for aspect instantiation under program control, instance-level advising, advising as a general alternative to object-oriented method invocation and overriding, and the provision of a separate join-point-method binding construct.

Blanqui Lecture - In the Sign of the Axiomatic Method: Mathematics as the Role Model for Neoclassical Economics

This lecture tries to explain how this could happen, or, why and when the economists' role model became the mathematician rather than the physicist. According to the standard interpretation, the triumph of axiomatics in modern neoclassical economics can be explained in terms of the discipline's increasing awareness of its lack of good experimental and observational data, and thus of its intrinsic inability to fully abide by the paradigm of mechanics. Yet this story fails to properly account for the transformation that the word rigor itself underwent first and foremost in mathematics as well as for the existence of a specific motivation behind the economists' decision to pursue the axiomatic route. While the full argument is developed in Giocoli 2003, these pages offer a taste of a (partially) alternative story which begins with the so-called formalist revolution in mathematics, then crosses the economists' almost innate urge to bring their discipline to the highest possible level of generality and Conceptual Integrity, and ends with the advent and consolidation of that very core set of methods, tools and ideas that constitute the contemporary image of economics.

JetteAbstract:Identification and prevention of community reintegration problems of veterans is an important public health mandate. However, no veteran-specific measure exists. Study purposes were to (1) develop the Community Reintegration for Service Members (CRIS) measure and (2) test the validity and reliability of the measure. Formative research identified challenges in community reintegration postdeployment. The World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health participation domain guided item-bank development. Items were refined through cognitive interviews and clinician consultation. Pilot studies with 126 veterans examined unidimensionality, internal consistency, reliability, and construct validity. Three unidimensional CRIS scales were developed. Working subjects had better CRIS scores then unemployed subjects. Subjects with posttraumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, or mental health problems had worse scores than subjects without these conditions. The correlations between the CRIS and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey scales of role physical, role emotional, and social functioning were 0.44–0.80. CRIS has strong reliability, Conceptual Integrity, and construct validity.

New York: Guilford Press, 1997, 197 pp. $25.00 (hardback) Alford and Beck have undertaken an ambitious task in The Integrative Power of Cognitive Therapy. The thesis of the work can be found on the first page of the introduction: ". . .cognitive therapy and theory not only constitute an effective, coherent, approach, but also may serve as a unifying or 'integrative' paradigm for psychopathology and effective psychotherapy" (p. 1). The authors offer cognitive therapy as an "... integrative therapy - a system of psychotherapy that fulfills the aims and goals of psychotherapy integration" (p. 1). In so doing, they seek to clarify particular issues that concern both cognitive therapy and the integration movement within psychotherapy. The text explores a) the nature and criteria for psychotherapy integration, b) theoretical coherence, c) the relationship of cognitive therapy to the psychotherapy integration movement, d) the internal and external dimensions of cognitive theory and therapy, e) the nature of human consciousness and cognition, f) the relationship of interpersonal factors to therapy process and outcome, and 9) contemporary philosophical and theoretical issues concerning cognitive therapy. The book is divided into three parts. Part I gives an overview of the theory and metatheory of cognitive therapy. In the first chapter, the authors provide a formal statement of cognitive theory in terms of ten axioms that form the apex of a theoretical system. In line with Popper's (1959) discussion of a "well-constructed theoretical system", the axioms are independent but interrelated, and numerous specific hypotheses can be derived from them. Also in line with Popper's spirit of non-justificationism, Alford and Beck emphasize that the axioms are not static principles, carved in stone. Cognitive theory is an evolving process. The ten axioms form the core of the book's discussion for cognitive therapy as an integrative paradigm for psychotherapy and psychopathology. In the second chapter Alford and Beck deal with metatheory and explore the nature of theory, focusing on issues such as the dichotomies between experimental theory and clinical practice and theories of simple versus complex phenomena, the use metaphors in describing phenomena and developing scientific theories, circular argumentation, and subjectivity in psychological science. Additionally, this chapter explores the nature of cause and cognition. The authors claim that "cognition provides an integrating framework for ... a systems (contextual or relational) theory" (p. 41). They offer "cognitive primacy" as the basic metatheoretical position that explains all other psychological processes. In chapter three, Alford and Beck discuss how cognition mediates consequences. They delineate the three cognitive systems that include a) the preconscious level, 2) the conscious level, and 3) the metacognitive level. The authors then relate these three systems to experimental research in cognitive theory. In Part II of the text, the authors discuss the relationship of cognitive therapy to the psychotherapy integration movement. Chapter five presents the authors' critique of integrative ideology, delineating its problems and cognitive therapy's solutions to those problems. Alford and Beck describe the integrative movement in terms of a) technical eclecticism' b) theoretical integration, and c) the common factors approach. They believe each approach falls short in lacking both scientific criteria, and definition and specificity. Such shortcomings lead to problems in theoretical and Conceptual Integrity and coherence. Other problems arise in terms of the multiple meanings of "psychotherapy integration," the politics of psychotherapy integration, and discouragement of scientific debate. The authors believe that such problems have led a lack of investment in scientific theories on the part of the integration movement. …
